Iformatio Updated Jue 2016 Itroductio These activities provide the kowledge ad uderstadig ad embedded skill developmet that foster allergy awareess ad safety amog Foudatio-Year 2 studets. These uderstadigs ad skills are liked to the Australia Curriculum: Health ad Physical Educatio ad the K-10 Health ad Physical Educatio Scope ad Sequece i the cotexts of Lifestyle choices ad Safety. Key uderstadigs There are may actios that ca be take to help keep a perso healthy ad safe. I some idividuals with severe allergies, this icludes avoidig ay triggers such as foods or isect stigs which may cause aaphylaxis. Foods that are healthy for most people ca make some people very sick. There are may characteristics that make a perso similar to others ad uique e.g. a allergy. Havig a balaced diet is importat for your health but some people must avoid oe or more foods to avoid food allergies. Sharig thigs with your frieds is part of beig a good fried but there are some thigs that should ever be shared, such as toothbrushes, hairbrushes, medicies, ad i some cases food, if your fried has food allergic reactios. Food allergies are serious ever try to trick someoe ito eatig food they are allergic to; ever tease or bully others about their allergies. There are a rage of safety rules that help people with food ad other allergies stay safe, such as oly eatig foods provided from home or foods approved by parets ad ot eatig ay food uless the igrediets are kow. There are a rage of safety rules that people ca follow to help those with food ad other allergies stay safe, such as ever sharig food; washig hads before ad after eatig; ot playig with toys whe eatig; wearig shoes whe playig outside; gettig adult help if others say they feel sick. Some people eed to take medicies to keep them from becomig uwell (e.g. isuli depedet diabetics, asthmatics, people with ADHD, people with allergic reactios.) Everyoe is resposible for their ow health ad persoal safety. Our school has a Aaphylaxis Policy/Maagemet Pla to help those with allergies. Page 1

Iformatio Allergy ad aaphylaxis basics for teachers What are allergies? Allergies occur whe the immue system produces atibodies agaist substaces i the eviromet (allerges) that are usually harmless. A food allergy is a immue system respose to a food protei that the body mistakely believes is harmful. Whe the idividual eats food cotaiig that protei, the immue system releases massive amouts of chemicals, triggerig symptoms that ca affect a perso s breathig, gastroitestial tract, ski ad/or heart. It is estimated that up to 2% of Australia adults ad 1 i 10 ifats aged 12 moths are ow food allergic * ad some of them will experiece a life-threateig allergic reactio (aaphylaxis). Approximately 10 people die from aaphylactic reactios each year i Australia. Other allerges apart from foods iclude isect bites, medicatios, cotact with latex. What are the symptoms of allergies ad aaphylaxis? The symptoms of a mild to moderate allergic reactio ca iclude: Tiglig i the mouth Wellig of the lips, face ad eyes Hives or welts Abdomial pai ad/or vomitig (These are sigs of a severe allergic reactio to isects) Symptoms of aaphylaxis (a severe allergic reactio) ca iclude: Difficulty breathig or oisy breathig Swellig of the togue Swellig/tightess i the throat Difficulty talkig ad/or a hoarse voice Wheezig or persistet coughig Persistat dizziess ad/or collapse Youg childre may appear pale ad floppy Sourced from ASCIA actio pla A severe allergic reactio usually occurs withi 20 miutes to 2 hours of exposure to the trigger ad if left utreated, ca be fatal. Eatig a small amout of food ca trigger aaphylaxis ad playig with toys or touchig hads that have bee cotamiated by the food ca cause a mild to moderate allergic reactio. * Osboure et al. Prevalece of challege prove IgE-mediated food allergy usig populatio based samplig ad predetermied challege criteria i ifats. J Allergy Cli Immuolol 2011: 127: Page 3
Iformatio What are the mai causes? There are ie foods that accout for 90% of allergic reactios: peauts, tree uts (waluts, almods, cashews, pistachios, pecas etc.) fish, shellfish, eggs, milk, sesame, soy ad wheat.) The other 10% are triggered by foods such as kiwi fruit, baaa, chicke, mustard ad celery. Peauts are the leadig cause of fatal food iduced aaphylactic reactios. Curretly, there is o cure for food allergy. Avoidace of the food is the oly way to prevet a reactio. Other commo allergy triggers iclude isect stigs, particularly bee stigs, medicatios, latex. Why is it importat to kow about aaphylaxis? Avoidace of kow allerges is crucial i the maagemet of aaphylaxis. Schools ad child care services eed to work with parets/ guardias ad childre to miimise a child s exposure to kow allerges ad reduce stigma, bullyig ad teasig that may result for some childre. Kowledge of severe allergies will assist staff ad studets to better uderstad how to help childre who are at risk of aaphylaxis. How ca aaphylaxis be treated? Adrealie (epiephrie) give as a ijectio usig a auto ijector (such as a EpiPe ) ito the outer mid-thigh muscle is the most effective first aid treatmet for aaphylaxis. Adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijectors are desiged so that ayoe ca use them i a emergecy. Parets/guardias should provide schools or child care services with a adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijector ad ASCIA Actio Pla for their child, which should be stored ulocked ad easily accessible to staff. If a child is treated with a adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijector, a ambulace must be called immediately to take the child to a hospital. How ca aaphylaxis be preveted? The key to the prevetio of aaphylaxis is: kowledge of childre who are at risk, awareess of kow allerges, ad avoidace of exposure to kow allerges Some childre wear a medical warig bracelet to idicate allergies. Page 4
Iformatio Privacy cosideratios It is importat to be aware that some parets/guardias may ot wish their child s idetity be disclosed to the wider school commuity, this may also apply to the studet themselves. It is recommeded that this be discussed with the studet s parets/guardias ad writte coset obtaied to display the studet s ame, photograph ad relevat treatmet details i staff areas, catees ad/or other commo areas. 6 Activity 1 TUNING IN ACTIVITY ➊ Uderstadig Allergies A way to stay healthy ad safe Preparatio A large teddy suitable to be Healthy Harry A autoijector traiig device such as Epipe Access The Wiggles Allergy Sog o YouTube Teachig tips Jeremy s Cake by Bethay Tucker (available for purchase o our olie store uder Childres books Focuses o a wallaby called Jeremy s allergy to uts ad eggs ad how he ad his mother keep him safe at his first birthday party. A shared readig of this book would complemet this Tuig i activity Itroduce Healthy Harry to the class. Explai that he does lots of thigs to stay healthy ad safe. Braistorm Thigs Harry might do to keep healthy ad safe (e.g. healthy food ad water, lots of rest, lots of exercise, lots of laughig, shares worries with someoe he trusts, does thigs he ejoys, always holds a adult s had aroud roads, always wears a seatbelt, always follows school rules.) Show The Wiggles Allergy Sog ad ecourage studets to dace to the sog. Play it agai while studets are seated ad discuss the key messages that are raised about allergies. Everyoe reacts to thigs like dust, pets ad certai foods differetly Allergies ca make us seeze, wheeze, have itchy eyes, have itchy ski Allergies to food are serious ad we should t offer food to people with food allergies Havig a allergy ca be scary but other people ca help Thigs that ca cause allergies iclude pets, dust, polle, ad foods like uts, shellfish, fish, seeds, eggs ad dairy. Page 6
Activity 1 Explai that Healthy Harry has a allergy to peauts ad eggs ad that if he eats eve a tiy bit of these foods he will be very sick. His togue swells up ad he ca t breathe ad he eeds a adult to help him straight away with medicie called adrealie (epiephrie) from a special pe called a Epipe. Show auto ijector ad explai that oly a adult ca use this o Healthy Harry. (Do t let studets play with it.) Ask studets to suggest other coditios where people eed to take medicies to keep them from becomig uwell (e.g. isuli depedet diabetics, asthmatics, ad people with ADHD.) Ask studets to suggest foods that that Healthy Harry might have to avoid to stay healthy ad safe (or foods that may cotai peauts ad eggs). Ecourage discussio of multicultural foods that may be part of studets diet. Draw these o the whiteboard, (e.g. peauts, eggs, peaut paste, satay sauce, muesli bars, egg oodles, cakes, biscuits, pies ad sack foods that cotai peauts ad eggs.) Ask voluteers to circle the foods that cotai peauts with oe coloured marker: the thigs that cotai eggs with aother coloured marker: ad the thigs that may cotai both peauts ad eggs with a third coloured marker ad tally totals.) Stress that it is hard to tell from just lookig at a food what it cotais. Foudatio- Year 2 - Learig Bad 5 Stress that Healthy Harry ca oly eat foods that his Mum or Dad or teacher say are safe for him to eat because it s tricky for him to kow what foods cotai peauts ad eggs. Ask What do you thik Healthy Harry eeds to tell his frieds so he ca stay safe aroud peauts ad eggs (tell them about his allergy; ask them to ot eat thigs with these foods i whe they are ear him; ask them ot to share food with him.) How do you thik Healthy Harry might feel about havig these food allergies? (scared, uhappy, left-out, special) What are some positive thikig tricks he ca use to make himself feel better about his allergies? (tell himself that everyoe is differet; tell himself that he kows how to stay safe aroud these foods ad there is o eed to be scared or uhappy; tell himself that he is lucky to have good frieds who will help him stay safe aroud these foods; remid himself of the other treats he gets istead of food treats; thik about the extra love ad care he gets from his family.) Page 7
Activity 1 What are some thigs you could do to keep Healthy Harry safer aroud eggs ad peauts? (remid him about his allergy ad ot to take food from other studets; try to eat food that does ot cotai peauts ad eggs whe you are with him; make sure you wash your hads before ad after eatig; stick up for him if ayoe is teasig him about ot beig able to eat these foods; tell the teacher if he feels sick.) Why is it importat for Healthy Harry to tell a adult as soo as he feels differet to ormal e.g. feel sick, get itchy, get a rash, has swolle eyes or lips, has a tiglig togue)? (because this may mea he has come i cotact with peauts or eggs ad his quick actio could help save his life.) What do you thik Healthy Harry s frieds ca do whe they see that he looks differet to ormal? (get a adult straight away.) Studets lear the followig sog: Ooey, Ooey, Ooey Allergies! 9 Paret Sheet 1 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 6 Paret Iformatio Sheet 1 Beig allergy aware Dear family We are coductig a allergy awareess program i our classroom as part of our school health educatio program. Here are some facts to help you discuss allergy safety with your child ad some tips o what you eed to do to help your child at school if he/she has a kow risk of aaphylaxis. What are allergies? A allergy is whe the immue system reacts to substaces (allerges) i the eviromet which are usually harmless (e.g. food proteis, polle, dust mites, medicies, latex). What is aaphylaxis? Aaphylaxis is a severe allergic reactio that is potetially life threateig. What causes aaphylaxis? Aaphylaxis is most commoly caused by food allergies. Ay food ca cause a allergic reactio, however ie foods cause 90% of reactios i Australia, these are: peauts tree uts (e.g. hazeluts, cashews, almods) egg cow s milk wheat soybea fish shellfish sesame. Page 9
Paret Sheet 1 Other causes of aaphylaxis iclude: isect stigs ad bites (bees, wasps, ats) medicatios latex. What are the sigs ad symptoms? Mild to moderate allergic reactio swellig of lips, face, eyes hives or welts tiglig mouth abdomial pai, vomitig (these are sigs of a severe allergic reactio to isects). Aaphylaxis (Severe Allergic Reactio) difficult/oisy breathig swellig of togue swellig/tightess i throat difficulty talkig ad/or hoarse voice wheeze or persistet cough persistet dizziess or collapse pale ad floppy (youg childre). How ca aaphylaxis be preveted? The key to the prevetio of aaphylaxis is: kowledge of childre who are at risk, awareess of kow allerges, ad prevetio of exposure to these allerges. How ca aaphylaxis be treated? Adrealie (epiephrie) give as a ijectio usig a auto ijector (such as a EpiPe ) ito the outer mid-thigh muscle is the first aid treatmet for aaphylaxis. Page 10
Paret Sheet 1 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 7 What ca you do if your child is at risk of aaphylaxis? Iform staff of your child s allergies ad discuss risk miimisatio strategies Work with staff to complete a Idividual Aaphylaxis Health Care Pla Provide the school with a copy of your child s ASCIA Actio Pla that has bee completed by a doctor ad has a up-to-date photograph Supply your child s adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijector ad esure it has ot expired. What ca you do to help your child support a classmate who is at risk of aaphylaxis? Talk to you child about ot sharig food with other childre Talk to your child about washig hads before ad after eatig Talk to your child about the sigs ad symptoms of aaphylaxis ad the importace of gettig a adult s help if they see ayoe with these symptoms. Adapted from Aaphylaxis Fact sheet WA Departmet of Health ad developed by Allergy & Aaphylaxis Australia For more iformatio see Page 11
Activity 2 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 8 FINDING OUT ACTIVITY 2 School rules to keep those with allergies safer Preparatio A large teddy suitable to be Healthy Harry Coloured dots or coloured markers Activity sheet 2.1 School rules about allergies photocopy oe per studet Teachig tips Jeremy s Magic School Day by Bethay Tucker (available for purchase I our olie store uder Childres Books Focuses o a wallaby called Jeremy s allergy to uts ad eggs ad how the school ad Jeremy s frieds follow some simple rules to make sure a visit from a magicia is just as special for him eve though he has allergies. A shared readig of this book would complemet this Fidig Out activity Braistorm as may examples of rules as studets ca recall. (Draw represetatios of or write the suggestios o the whiteboard.) At the completio of the braistorm, ask what each rule is for ad discuss what might happe if the rule did t exist. Discuss why we have rules (e.g. to stop accidets; to keep us safe; so we kow how to play a game; to be fair; to have a happy class/family.) Seat studets i oe large circle or two large cocetric circles facig a parter to respod to their parter or the whole group about their opiio o the followig scearios: If your babysitter called for you to ru across the road ear the school istead of usig the crosswalk or holdig her had, would you? If you saw two childre hurtig each other i the playgroud, would you go ad get a teacher? If your little brother was about to take some of Mum s cough mixture, would you grab the bottle from him ad go ad tell a adult? Page 12
Activity 2 If your fried kept cheatig whe you were playig a card game would you stop the game ad ask them to stop cheatig? If your fried was allergic to uts would you give them a bite of your peaut paste sadwich? If you were allergic to eggs would you oly eat food at school that has bee give to you by your Mum or Dad? If your fried got stug by a bee o his face after morig tea would you quickly go ad get a teacher? If you were allergic to eggs would you oly eat food at school that has bee give to you by your Mum or Dad? If you were allergic to peauts would you tell all your frieds so they could help you stay safe aroud peauts? If you saw someoe i your class beig teased because they could t eat a certai food would you tell the perso doig the teasig to stop? Discuss the rules that would eed to be obeyed i each sceario. Stress that sometimes obeyig a rule or doig the right thig is ot always the easiest optio (e.g. you have to have courage ad be assertive sometimes to obey the rules. ) Ask for studet voluteers to role-play assertive resposes ad behaviour required to obey these rules with you. Swap roles several times. Explai that Healthy Harry has a allergy to peauts ad eggs but to keep him safer aroud these foods, the school has some rules that everyoe must follow. Studets suggest a list of Do s ad Do ts rules to keep Healthy Harry safer at school, usig a teacher directed T chart where pictures are draw to represet suggestios. Page 13
Activity 2 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 9 This list could be kept i the Home Corer ad added to as discussio develops with other activities. For example: DO S Wash hads before ad after eatig Kow what he is allergic to Get a adult if he shows sigs of beig allergic to food Have a special Actio Pla with his photo ad his adrealie (epiephrie) auto ijector (Epipe ) DON T Do t share food with him Do t force him to eat food or trick him ito eatig food Do t tease or bully him about the foods he ca t eat Studets use a coloured dot each (or a gree marker to tick) to vote for the rules that they thik are the most importat rules to keep childre safer aroud foods they may be allergic to at school. Tally votes. Exted the list by askig the Pricipal or school urse to talk to studets about the school s rules about respodig to a allergic respose. Develop vocabulary related to sigs ad symptoms of a allergic reactio (e.g. vomit, swell, itchy, cough, seeze, wheeze, red ski). Also discuss words studets ca use to describe their feeligs whe they have a allergic reactio. (e.g. dizzy, frighteed, paicky). At Home Activity: Studets complete Activity sheet 2.1 School rules about allergies ad take home to discuss with family/caregivers. Ecourage studets to discuss other family rules that they may have about eatig food. Page 14

Activity 3 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 11 SORTING OUT ACTIVITY 3 What thigs are ok to share? Preparatio Activity sheet 3.1 Food allergy cards photocopy eough for oe per pair of studets A selectio of items such as a toy, comb, toothbrush, asthma puffer, book, empty medicie packet or bottle, luch box with some of the food allergy cards iside. Check with parets/guardias of studets i the class with kow allergies whether they are comfortable with their child talkig about their allergies with other studets. Teachig tip Keep the cards from the activity sheet i the Home Corer so studets ca play the games whe they have free time. Itroduce the cocept of owership ad sharig by displayig items listed i the Preparatio. Ask (or coduct a Thik, pair share) Which of these items are OK to share? (toy ad book). Why do we ot share medicies? (it may result i adverse side effects, accidetal poisoig.) Who gives you your medicie whe you are sick? (should be trusted adult.) Why do we ot share a comb or a toothbrush? (could pass o its ad spread germs that may make us sick.) Why do we ot share food i our luchbox? (because the other perso may be allergic to that food.) Why is it importat to ot eve share a small piece of these foods (because oly the smallest amout, eve a tiy bit o your figers or a sip of milk ca make the perso who is allergic to this food very sick.) What do you ow that you do t like to share? How do you feel whe someoe makes you share somethig you do t wat to? Do you thik sharig thigs like toys ad books is a good way to be a carig fried? Page 16
Activity 3 What else could you share with your frieds to show them you are a carig fried? Give each pair of studets Activity sheet 3.1 Food allergy cards. Explai that the ie foods o the sheet are the oes that cause the most allergies i people. Ask if ayoe kows they are allergic to ay of these foods or kows someoe else who is allergic to these foods. Allow time for sharig of stories of studets with allergies (if parets/guardias have approved this discussio.) Discuss the types of foods where some of these foods may also be foud (e.g. milk is foud i cheese ad yoghurt; eggs ad wheat are foud i some cakes ad biscuits.) Studets cut out the food allergy cards ad with their parter play the followig games. Cocetratio: Studets lay the cards face dow ad play cocetratio. To keep a pair, older studets must also describe a type of food where you might also fid this food e.g. milk is also foud i cheese; peauts are also foud i some sack bars. Barrier game: Studets divide the pairs of cards. The first player selects oe of their cards ad places it behid a barrier ad describes it to their parter without sayig the ame. The parter listes ad decides which card is beig described before placig it o the table. The barrier is removed to check if the cards match. Studets swap roles util all the pairs are used. Studets paste each of their set of ie cards oto a sheet of paper ad draw a picture of themselves eatig their luch or recess (or fruit for youger studets). Studets write uder their drawig: I do t share my food with ayoe. Page 17
Activity 3.1 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 13 ACTIVITY SHEET 3.1 Food allergy cards Please prit each page twice so that you have 2 cards each ad cut alog lies You will eed two copies (pair) of each allerge card to complete this activity Egg Milk Peauts Page 18

Activity 4 Foudatio- Year 2 Learig Bad 14 REFLECTING ACTIVITY 4 Practisig makig decisios aroud allerges Preparatio Activity sheet 4.1 Time to decide photocopy ad elarge or place o iteractive whiteboard A large teddy suitable to be Healthy Harry ad smaller teddy for a fried Itroduce studets to Healthy Harry who is sick. Explai that he has swolle lips ad eyes ad red welts o his eck ad a tiglig mouth. Ecourage studets to ask questios of him to fid out how he feels ad why he is sick. (He has had a small bite of a cupcake that someoe gave him at a fried s birthday ad he is allergic to eggs ad the cake was made with eggs ad that is why he is feelig sick.) Stress that what Healthy Harry did was very usafe. Itroduce the smaller fried teddy ad role play this fried fidig someoe to sit with Healthy Harry (a studet) ad goig quickly to get a adult. Demostrate the fried teddy usig assertive verbal ad overbal commuicatio skills to act quickly i a emergecy. Ask or coduct a Thik, pair share What did Healthy Harry s fried do that could have saved his life? (stayed calm; got a fried to stay with Harry; respoded quickly to get a adult so they could give him his Epipe ). Why was this very brave or courageous? What feeligs do you thik Healthy Harry s fried may have had before they made such a brave decisio? What feeligs do you thik the studet may have had while they were waitig for little teddy to get help? What feeligs do you thik Healthy Harry may have had while he was waitig with the studet for a adult to come? What feeligs do you thik Healthy Harry s fried may have had after Healthy Harry felt better agai? Page 20
Activity 4 Ca you thik of some times i your life whe doig the right thig or the brave thig was also the hardest thig to do? Do you thik this situatio was a emergecy? Why do you thik you eed to stay calm if you fid yourself i a emergecy? (so you ca thik clearly ad behave i a helpful way.) How is tellig to get help differet from tellig to get someoe ito trouble? What rule should Healthy Harry have remembered to keep him safe aroud the foods he is allergic to? (oly eat food that Mum or Dad have said is OK.) Itroduce the simple decisio makig model Activity sheet 4.1 Time to decide i a elarged form or o the iteractive whiteboard ad reflect o the situatio that Healthy Harry ad fried teddy were just i ad the optios available to fried teddy ad why stayig calm ad gettig a adult were the best optios. Stress that whe choosig the best optio i a decisio it sometimes helps to thik about how they would feel if they had chose each optio. Our feeligs ofte affect our actios ad words. Revise the safety rules aroud allerges from Activity sheet 2.1 School rules about allergies. As a whole group, studets use the simple decisio makig model to determie what they would say ad do i each of the followig scearios after cosiderig the optios available: Your fried has a egg allergy. Someoe i your class brigs i their birthday cupcakes to share. Your fried ca t have ay because they cotai eggs ad all the special o eggs cupcakes that his Mum set to school to keep i the freezer have ru out. What could you do or say to make your fried feel better? Your fried Aa has a peaut allergy. Two girls are darig Aa to eat a muesli bar. You ad Aa are ot sure if the muesli bar has peauts i it. What could you do or say to make sure Aa stays safe? You have a milk allergy. Your fried spills their Choc Milk ad gets some o you. You wash it off straight away ad feel OK. What could you do or say to make sure this ever happes agai? You are playig i the sadpit at school ad your fried Jo gets stug by a bee o her leg. After a couple of miutes her face becomes red ad swolle ad her eyes are all puffy. You are ot sure whether Jo is allergic to bees. What could you do or say to make sure Jo stays safe? Page 21
