3 Essential Oils for Children Essential oils have shown nature's true essence and mystique for decades and continue to have so many wonderful uses for families today. Essential oils can be a wonderful and powerful resource for your children, but it's important to remember that babies have very sensitive systems. With the right safety guidelines, knowledge and common sense, using essential oils can be safe and effective for the whole family. Here's what you need to know! General Safety Tips and Precautions: Essential oils are highly concentrated; it is important not to exceed the number of recommended drops. Treat essential oils as any other medication and use with caution. Essential oils should never be taken internally without seeking the advice of a professional practitioner. Heath conditions: If you have a skin condition, are pregnant, have epilepsy or asthma, are on a course of treatment with prescribed medication, or are in any doubt about any condition you may have, it is important that you seek the advice of a doctor or suitable practitioner before using essential oils. Avoid eye contact. With all essential oils, even when diluted, contact with sensitive areas, such as the eyes, should be avoided. If, however, oil does get into the eyes, wash them immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention. All essential oils should be kept out of reach of children. If a child accidentally swallows any essential oil, seek urgent medical attention.

4 How To Use Essential Oils: Research shows that we respond emotionally more to smell than to any of our other senses. Because of this, aromatherapy enables us to benefit from the special properties of essential oils that are derived from the odoriferous parts of plants. Massage Massaging with essential oils is one of the most popular uses. Essential oils should not be applied directly to the skin, and need to be diluted before applying. I recommend jojoba oil or almond oil. Bath Bathing with essential oils is one of the easiest and most enjoyable forms of therapy. Fill up the bath tub and add a few drops of oil (2 drops or less for children under 6), then agitate the water to disperse. While the children are playing in the bath water, their skin absorbs a small amount of oil and the heat of the water slowly evaporates the rest. Vaporization The evaporative properties of essential oils make them ideal for use in a vaporizer. Inhalation Some essential oils are ideal for inhalation. Add 3-5 drops of essential oil to a bowl of very hot water (not boiling) and inhale the vapor for 5-10 minutes. (Use caution with which oil types are suitable for your child s age) If this method is not convenient, simply add 1-2 drops of essential oil to a tissue and inhale. Diluting essential oils There is no regulated rules for dilution of oils, so it's best to use general guidelines and common sense based on the age of your child. General rule of thumb is to simply use a 1% dilution for kids, which translates to 1 drop per teaspoon of the carrier oil. Use a moisturizing carrier oil such as jojoba oil or almond oil to nourish baby's skin and minimize any irritation. More age-based dilution suggestions below: Ages 0-1 AGES 2-5 AGES 6-10 AGES 10+ 1/8 the labeled 1/4 the labeled 1/2 the labeled Full labeled

5 Essential Oils for Children 2 and UNDER Essential oils should be used very sparingly at this age. If you choose to use essential oils, use the ones listed below and only use them in vaporizer form or with very generous dilution. 7 Essential Oils for Children Ages 6-10 Safe Essential Oils: Cajeput Cornmint Fennel Laurel Leaf/Bay Laurel Spanish Marjoram Niaouli Sage The following oils should be used in smaller doses topically as they can cause skin irritation if not properly diluted: Peppermint Cardamom Anise Star Anise Nutmeg Essential Oils for Children Ages 10+ By this age, most of the essential oils are safe for topical use or diffusion for children, though you should always be sure to slowly introduce each oil individually, to be sure that there are no adverse reactions or allergies. The following essential oils are considered safe for ages 6-10, but should all be used sparingly because they contain a chemical constituent called cineol 1,8 and menthol.
