What goes into a bottle of Yakult? Lactobacillus casei Shirota, the strain of bacteria unique to Yakult, scientifically proven to reach the gut alive. Worldwide trust over 28 million Yakult products are consumed every day. Over 80 years of scientific research. No fat, no gluten, no artificial colours. And of course 6.5 billion unique bacteria! _1b_12pp_Leaflet.indd 1 06/06/ :5
Yakult was developed in 1935 by the scientist Dr Minoru Shirota. And although our bottle may be small, we have a big story to tell That was then... Dr Shirota spent many years investigating lactic acid bacteria, trying to find a strain that would be robust enough to survive through the intestines. After much research, in 1930 he discovered such a strain, now known as Lactobacillus casei Shirota, and in 1935 used this to make a fermented milk drink resulting in the first ever bottle of Yakult! _1b_12pp_Leaflet.indd 2 06/06/ :5
This is now: Fast forward over 75 years, and today 28 million Yakult products are consumed every day in 32 countries around the world. Yet our core product has changed very little today s Yakult still contains the very same Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain that was discovered by Dr Shirota all those years ago. Each little bottle contains at least 6.5 billion of these special little bacteria that are scientifically proven to reach the gut alive. And that includes Yakult Light, the one with the blue top, which has fewer calories _1b_12pp_Leaflet.indd 3 06/06/ :5
_1b_12pp_Leaflet.indd 4 06/06/ :5
Did you know? Dr Shirota was keen that people all around the world would enjoy his product, which is why he used the universal language of Esperanto to name his new drink. Yakult means yoghurt -although Yakult is really a fermented milk drink not a yoghurt A science-based company Science has always been at the core of our product and at the heart of everything we do. Dr Shirota himself established Japan s Yakult Central Institute for Microbiological Research in 1955 and today scientists at this renowned institute and the company s European research centre, continue to investigate the effects of the Lactobacillus casei Shirota strain _1b_12pp_Leaflet.indd 5 06/06/ :5

FAQ s How often should I drink Yakult? We suggest one bottle every day. If you d like a second bottle that s fine - however, Yakult isn t meant to be a thirst-quencher. How should I store Yakult? Yakult must be refrigerated. Bottles can be kept out of the fridge for a short time (e.g. bringing Yakult home from the shops). Does Yakult contain flavourings? Yakult contains citrus fruit and vanilla flavourings. What is the difference between the red and the blue bottles? Both have the same flavour and quantity of bacteria. Yakult Light (blue) contains the sweetener sucralose, so has less sugar and fewer calories than the original Yakult (red). Does Yakult contain any colourings? No - Yakult s colour is natural and due to the process of caramelisation, which happens naturally when milk is heated. As part of its production process, the milk in Yakult is heat-treated before it is fermented _1b_12pp_Leaflet.indd 8 06/06/ :5
Is Yakult suitable for......vegetarians? Yes it contains fermented skimmed cow s milk but no other animal products....people who are lactose intolerant? Possibly Yakult contains very little lactose (approximately 1g per bottle), so may be suitable for some lactose-intolerant individuals. If you can tolerate a yogurt, then it s likely you would be able to drink a bottle of Yakult....pregnant or breastfeeding mothers? Yes Yakult can be drunk as part of a normal balanced diet....people who are intolerant to gluten? Yes Yakult is gluten-free....people on medication? Yes Yakult is a food, not a medicine, and so should not interfere with any medication....people taking antibiotics? Yes antibiotics can disrupt your gut bacteria.
