Hazard Identification Potential Health effects: Primary entry route: Inhalation Acute Inhalation: Dust released from cutting, drilling or abrading the product may cause temporary irritation of the nose throat and respiratory tract resulting in coughing and sneezing. Certain susceptible individuals (Asthmatics) may experience wheezing after inhalation of dust. Page 1 of 4

2 Chronic inhalation: Repeated or prolonged exposures to dust containing crystalline silica may cause silicosis and increases the risk of bronchitis, tuberculosis, lung cancer, renal disease and scleroderma. Smoking increases the risk of silicosis in persons also exposed to crystalline silica. Acute& Chronic Ingestion: Irritation of mouth and gastro intestinal tract is likely if ingestion of dust occurs. Acute& Chronic Skin Contact: Dust can act as mechanical irritant Acute& Chronic Eye Contact: Dust may irritate eyes from mechanical abrasion, causing watering and redness. Medical conditions aggravated by exposure: Inhalation of fibre cement dust may aggravate individuals with pre existing lung conditions (asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, pneumonia) Carcinogenicity: International Agency for the Research on Cancer (IARC): Crystalline silica inhaled in the forms of quartz or cristobalite from occupational sources is carcinogenic to humans. The National Toxicology Program (NTP) has concluded that respirable crystalline silica is a known human carcinogen 4. First Aid Measures Ingestion: Eye Contact: Skin Contact: Inhalation: If swallowed, dilute by drinking large amounts of water. Do not induce vomiting. Seek medical attention. Flush with running water or saline for at least 15 minutes. Do not rub or scratch eyes. Seek medical attention if redness persists or if visual changes occur. Wash with mild soap and water. Remove individual to fresh air. If shortness of breath or wheezing develops, seek medical attention. 5. Fire Fighting Measures Everite Nutec Products will not burn. 6. Accidental release measures. Routine housekeeping practices are necessary for cleaning areas where Everite Nutec Products have been cut, resulting in dust and/or off cuts. A fine water spray should be used to suppress dust when sweeping. Vacuuming, preferably with an industrial vacuum cleaner, is preferred to sweeping. 7. Handling and Storage It is recommended that Everite Nutec Products are stored under cover and protected from the elements. 8. Exposure controls/personal protection Note: Under normal conditions of use Everite Nutec Products do not present a health hazard. The health warnings apply to dust generated from the products by cutting, drilling, routing, sawing, crushing, or otherwise abrading. Whenever possible perform these tasks using Local Exhaust Ventilation and/or use wet methods and saws or saw blades designed for fibre cement products. The score and snap method and the use of low revolution circular saws minimize dust generation. Keep exposure to dust as low as possible. Respirable crystalline silica levels should not exceed exposure limits specified by the OHS act. Page 2 of 4

3 PERSONAL PROTECTION Eye: - If cutting materials with power tools, dust resistant safety goggles/glasses should be worn. Skin: - Direct contact with skin should be avoided by wearing long sleeved shirts, long trousers and gloves. - Exposure to dust on work clothes should be avoided when changing or removing clothes. - Work clothes should be washed regularly. Inhalation: - If drilling, sanding, or cutting using abrasive methods use SABS /NIOSH/ Department of Labour - approved dust mask or respirators and ensure these are fitted correctly according to manufacturer s instructions. Note that persons with facial hair will have difficulty in obtaining satisfactory face seal. For alternatives, consult the respirator manufacturer. - Water should be used to suppress dust. - Collect dust using vacuum equipment where possible. 9.
