2 ODOR : Solvent Potential Health Effects --- PRIMARY ROUTES OF ENTRY --Dermal Contact - Inhalation --- SHORT-TERM EXPOSURE --Breathing of vapors (above the exposure limit) can cause nasal and respiratory tract irritation. Central nervous system (CNS) effects, such as, dizziness, nausea, headache, weakness, confusion, and possible unconsciousness may also occur. Repeated and prolonged skin contact can cause irritation and/or dermatitis to occur. Contact with eyes causes irritation. If swallowed, gastrointestinal irritation, vomiting, and diarrhea can occur; CNS effects may also develop. Aspiration of liquid material into the lungs can cause chemical pneumonitis (lung damage).. Inhalation of MDI vapors at concentrations above ppm can produce irritation of the mucous membranes in the respiratory tract, runny nose, sore throat, productive cough, and a reduction in lung function. Exposure well above the TLV may lead to bronchitis, bronchial spasm and pulmonary edema (fluid in the lungs). Chemical or hypersensitive pneumonitis, with flu-like symptoms (e.g. fever, chills) has also been reported. Polymeric MDI can cause skin irritation and discoloration. May cause eye irritation. --- LONG-TERM EXPOSURE --Overexposure to xylene over an extended period of time may cause central nervous system depression, and possible liver and kidney effects. Severe overexposure may cause heart abnormalities. Repeated vapor exposure can cause reversible damage to the cornea of the eyes. Animal studies have found that xylene causes liver, kidney, spleen and lung damage and can affect the heart. Several animal studies have indicated embryo/fetotoxic effects for rodents exposed to xylene at doses toxic to the pregnant females. Other studies in rats indicate evidence of developmental toxicity in offspring with no signs of maternal toxicity.. As a result of previous repeated exposures or a single large dose, certain individuals develop isocyanate sensitization (chemical asthma) which will cause them to react to later exposures to isocyanate at levels well below the TLV. Symptoms can include chest tightness, wheezing, cough, shortness of breath, or asthma attack, all of which can occur immediately and/or several hours after exposure. There are some studies that show that overexposure to isocyanates causes lung damage (including decrease in lung function) which may be permanent. Repeated skin contact with MDI has also caused skin sensitization in humans.. Animal studies in which pregnant rats were exposed to 600/1000 ppm ethylbenzene, resulted in toxic effects in the offspring, including defects in skeleton formation. These effects were seen at levels slightly toxic to pregnant females. --- EYE CONTACT --Flush thoroughly and continuously with copious amounts of water. Seek immediate medical attention after flushing. --- SKIN CONTACT --SKIN: Remove contaminated clothing. Wash skin thoroughly with soap and water. If irritation persists, seek medical attention. --- INHALATION --Inhalation - Remove to fresh air. If breathing is difficult give oxygen. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. Get medical attention. --- INGESTION --INGESTION - Do not induce vomiting. Vapors can ignite explosively. Do not use a direct stream of water. Solvent will float and can be reignited on the surface of water. Vapors concentrated in a confined, poorly ventilated area can be ignited upon contact with a spark, flame, or high intensity heat. Containers exposed to intense heat may rupture due to vapor pressure buildup. Vapors are heavier than air and may travel a considerable distance to a source of ignition and flash back. Keep vapors away from heat, sparks, open flame and other sources of ignition in all containers, vessels and associated piping. Vapors may spread long distances and ignite explosively. Ground and bond all transfer and storage equipment: use non-sparking tools and equipment. Do not reuse container. Emptied containers may be hazardous due to residual product. --- HANDLING --Avoid eye contact. Avoid inhalation Avoid skin contact. --- SKIN PROTECTION --Wear appropriate clothing to prevent contact with the skin. Remove contaminated clothing and launder before wearing again. --- VENTILATION PROTECTION --There should be enough fresh air flowing past the user to maintain exposure levels below those listed. Solvent vapors are heavier than air and collect in lower levels of the work area. Sufficient ventilation should be provided to prevent flammable vapor/air mixtures from accumulating. --- RESPIRATION PROTECTION --If exposure levels exceed those listed, approved respiratory protection should be used. --- EYE PROTECTION --Safety glasses with side shields or Chemical splash goggles --- PROTECTIVE GLOVES --Milled nitrile Neoprene or Rubber gloves if contact is expected --- OTHER PROTECTION --Employees who have prolonged contact with this material should practice good personal hygiene by frequent washing of hands and arms with soap and water.
