9 i PREFACE This Technical Note presents absorption cross sections at temperatures of 93, 73, 53, 33, 13 and 3 K for the chlorofluorocarbon species CFC-11 (CC13F), CFC-1 (CC1F), CFC-13 (CC1F3), CFC-1 (CF), CFC- (CHC1F), CFC-113 (CC13F13), CFC- 11 (CC1F), and CFC- 115 (CC1F5). The infrared cross sections are those reported by McDaniel et al. (199), and are displayed in graphical form to facilitate quick identification and quantification of CFC gases in high and medium resolution remote sensing studies. The work reported here is supported in part by the NASA Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) program under contract S A. Goldman is an NCAR Affiliate Scientist and is from the University of Denver.
10 1 This Technical Note displays absorption cross sections at temperatures of 93, 73, 53, 33, 13 and 3 K for the chlorofluorocarbon species CFC-11 (CC13F), CFC-1 (CClF), CFC-13 (CClF3), CFC-1 (CF), CFC- (CHClF), CFC-113 (CC13F3), CFC-11 (CC1F), and CFC-115 (CClF5). These man-made gases play an active role in contributing to the increase of chlorine in the Earth's atmosphere, and to the increase of opacity in the infrared. Remote infrared sensing observations of these gases are frequently carried out at temperatures colder than room temperature, and thus accurate determination of CFC miing ratio profiles will be improved by using the cold temperature cross sections. The cross sections are those measured by McDaniel et al. (199). Measurements were taken at several pressures, from.5 to. torr. Least squares fitting of optical depth versus column density yielded determinations of slope (cross section) as a function of column density. The cross sections at each wave number, etrapolated to zero column density are the cross sections reported by McDaniel et al., and are displayed in this Tech Note. The species CFC-11, CFC-1, CFC-13, CFC-1, CFC-, CFC-11 and CFC- 115 were measured at an instrument resolution of.3 cm-1, and tabulated at every.15 cm-1. For CFC-113, the instrument resolution was 1. cm-1, and cross sections were tabulated at every.5 cm-1. These cross sections will become part of the 1991 HITRAN database, the ATMOS database and the GEISA database. Upon request, the data can be obtained, either on magnetic tape, or upon a convenient IBM PC diskette. In general the total systematic and random error of the data is on the order of 15 percent. As reported by McDaniel et al., comparison with the few other determinations of CFC band intensities reveals agreement to better than 15 percent, though for CFC-1, CFC-113, and CFC-11 the differencesrange from 3 percent to percent. To facilitate intercomparison to other laboratory data, Table 1 lists the integrals of cross section for a stated range of wave number. Note that these integral values are not total band intensities, since the full band wings are not included in the cross section listing. For eample, the wings of CFC-11 fall off more quickly at 3 K than at room temperature. In order to simplify the interpolation between temperatures, the 3 K band wings determined the range of wave number over which all CFC-11 data are reported. Table 1 also lists the maimum cross sections for each of the CFC bands. These cross sections are applicable to most tropospheric and lower stratospheric observations of CFC's. However, they do not reflect the fine structure observable for
11 some CFC's (such as CFC-1) at low pressures with higher spectral resolution. Also, pressure broadening is not addressed when using the present cross sections. The cross section data are displayed in two formats. For each species there are two figures which span the si temperatures, and cover the wave number range to be found on the 199 HITRAN compilation. Additional figures display the cross sections over a smaller range of wave number, i.e., a range of wave number which will likely be used in remote sensing identification of CFC species. For several of the species the temperature dependence is not large, e.g., at 89.5 cm-1 the maimum CFC- cross section varies only by percent for temperatures between 93 and 3 K. For many of the gases, the temperature dependence is very large, e.g., at cm-1 the CFC-1 peak varies by a factor of two. A straightforward application of the cross sections can be made by interpolating the cross sections with respect to temperature. Such application will increase the accuracy of CFC measurements by infrared spectroscopic methods.
