1 Farm Living & Learning Academy Village Help Us Build the Dream A Better Future for Young Adults with Autism
2 What is autism? Autism is a neurobiological disorder that affects a person s ability to communicate, form relationships with others, and respond appropriately to their environment. Some people with autism are relatively high-functioning. Others appear mentally challenged and have almost no language skills. Most individuals with autism continue to grow and change over time. The majority of adult children with autism need lifelong teaching and reinforcement of skills. Friends of Autistic People (FAP) is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Since its founding over 10 years ago, FAP has advocated for the needs of the entire spectrum of grown children with autism who have aged out of the school system and have since become invisible to the community. FAP is a pioneer in raising awareness about the services needed for adults with autism and advocating social and legislative changes on local, state, and federal levels. Why a farm? Once children with autism turn 21 virtually all services that were provided to them as children are cut off. Most grown children with autism thrive on outdoor activities, hiking, horticulture, riding therapy and working with animals. The Farm Living and Learning Academy Village will provide continued education and combine boarding and day programs that include academic, vocational and life skills education.
3 What will the farm look like? The Farm Living and Learning Academy Village will be an organic farm. It will support 20 resident student farmers and day program participants. The farm will have residential homes, instructional and administrative buildings, a greenhouse complex, a barn and farm stands. Farming of herbs, vegetables and flowers will be taught. Students will learn crafts and plant-to-table food preparation. Condemned horses and other animals that are offered a sanctuary will allow the residents to groom and bond with them. An ideal place for grown children with autism! The village life will offer a place for living and learning in an extended family. The Farm Living and Learning Academy Village will offer proven autism therapies. Each person with autism will have an individually designed residential, work and leisure plan that will teach essential life and work skills and enhance the resident s self esteem. Please Help Us Build the Dream A Better Future for Young Adults with Autism
