We passed! Yet upon close examination, we had many recommendations focused on improving instruction in our academic program. We have had time to really consider exactly what will help our students achieve and progress based on current research and tested methodology. We are embarking on a journey of intense professional development for all of our teachers. It s called AEBPD, which stands for ASL/English Bilingual Professional Development. We started last summer by sending a group of 6 teachers to a boot camp training at Washington School for the Deaf. This fall and through the school year we will be rolling out the course of study for all of our teachers, using our six teachers as our mentors along the way! In order to accomplish this graduate level feat, we need to reconfigure our school week and as a team, we have decided to have an earlier dismissal time on Fridays by one hour starting fall school year. Instead of 1:50pm, we will be dismissing students at 12:50. The Portland bus will arrive at Tualatin Fred Meyer at 1:50P and in Oregon City, at 2:30P. The Eugene bus will arrive at Sheldon Community Pool at 2:45pm. Fridays will be a block-like schedule to ensure we meet required minutes for subjects and build in time for study hall, assemblies and pep rallies as well. Teachers will remain on campus and participate in their professional training. There will be minimal impact to our regular programming as we conduct the training this Page 1 The is a community that fosters lifelong learning, encouraging individuals to

Thank you for your continued support of OSD we are excited for the time we are dedicating to this venture and look forward to increased student achievement as the result! Warmly, Sharla Jones Director 35 th Annual Jog A Thon Volunteers Needed By Karen Trowbridge Our 35 Annual Jog A Thon will take place on June 8 th from 10:00am-11:00am at the Logan Track here at OSD. A pep rally on April 27 th kicked off the event with PE Teacher, Scott Pfaff leading the charge! Students are bringing home sponsor papers. Please have your student bring in any money collected and sponsorship papers to the OSD Jog-A-Thon Headquarters (OSD Cashier). If any parent would like to volunteer on the day of the event, please make sure you have your Volunteer Form on file with Sharon Thompson in the front office and let Karen Trowbridge know that you would like to help. I need 8 parents for check in stations to mark off laps. I need 4 parents to help with water distribution. Volunteers need to be at OSD by 9:30am out on the track. I could use 3 parent volunteers (could be the same volunteers as above) to arrive at 8:00am to help with decorations. Please contact Karen at /V VP karen.trowbridge@osd.k12.or.us Garden Faire 2017 By Gayle Robertson Come to the OSD Garden and see what we ve been up to! Peruse and buy vegetable and flower starts, collected heirloom seeds, mint tea, fairy houses, and other garden delights. Your purchase will help teach a new generation tangible skills that can change the world. Make a difference while enjoying the beauty of the garden, complimentary mint tea, and the company of fellow gardeners at the OSD Garden Faire! Thank you again :) Community US Postal Service Robert Panara Stamps By USPS Wednesday, June 7th 5:30P Pietro s Pizza 1637 Hawthorne Ave NE, Salem Pizza and drinks will be provided. Please RSVP OSD at , VP Middle School Track and Field C.I.L. District By Matt Boyd Congratulations to our middle school girls - they successfully defended last year's title as League Champions! Two years in a row! Now, it's time to rest and then prepare to three-peat next year! Our middle school boys dominated the running events! Unfortunately, we have no one in the field events, save for one who did javelin and another who did shot put. Without having a presence in the field events, we're unable to secure more points, leading to a possible championship. Next year, we'll work on that. I want to THANK all the 8th graders who gave their all yesterday. This was their last meet. We Page 3 Two-Ounce 70 3 Stamp Formats The 16th stamp in the Distinguished Americans series honors Robert Panara ( ), an influential teacher and a pioneer in the field of Deaf Studies. The stamp features a photograph of Panara taken in He is shown signing the word respect. 4 May 5, 2017 Monthly Newsletter Volume 5, Edition 04 Studies included influential articles he wrote in the 1970s on deaf American writers and deaf characters in modern literature, and the book Great Deaf Americans (1983). Panara taught at Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C., for nearly twenty years beginning in 1948, and at the National Technical Institute for the Deaf (part of the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York State) from its founding in 1967 to He was one of the founders, in 1967, of the groundbreaking National Theatre of the Deaf in Waterford, Connecticut, which provided deaf actors with a venue for thriving in the performing arts. encourage your friends and neighbors to do the same. At no cost to participants, Fred Meyer shares about $400 a year with FOSD for our projects, just because our families shop at Fred Meyer. Thanks for your time and attention to this easy way of helping our kids. Roshani Shay FOSD Board Member Art director Ethel Kessler designed the stamp with an existing photograph by Mark Benjamin, official photographer of the National Technical Institute for the Deaf at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The words Two Ounce on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever stamp, this stamp will always be valid for the rate printed on it. Fred Meyer Community Rewards By Friends of OSD Dear FOSD Board Members, Advisory Council Members, OSD Staff and OSD Families, Apparently, Fred Meyer has "re-set" their Community Rewards system as of July 1. What this means is that you need to re-link your Fred Meyer rewards card with: Friends of Oregon School for the Deaf, non-profit # Go to to do this as soon as you can.
