3 lesson plans We want to make things as easy as possible for teachers to organise a fundraiser for us so here are some suggestions for lesson plans. Introduction to charity Introduce your pupils to what charities are and what they do. Ask them for examples of charities they have heard of or supported in the past. Discuss different types of charities... service providers, grant giving, policy campaigners etc. Think about how charities can make money and get them to think of fundraising ideas. Tell them about Cash for Kids a local grant giving charity, helping children right here in our area. Thinking of others discussion Cash for Kids is a charity that supports children who are suffering from illness, living in poverty or are disabled. Encourage the children to think about the situations other children may be experiencing (case studies are included in this pack). Ask them to come up with suggestions of how they would help others less fortunate than them. Fundraising group work Brainstorm to come up with fundraising ideas. Each group chooses their best idea then work on the plan for their event (where, when, how will it raise money etc.) Get them to create a poster for their best idea. 3

4 lesson activities Superhero activities for your pupils to do in class. Pre-school Colour in the superhero templates in this pack. Cut them out and stick them onto spoons or lollypop sticks. Primary 1-4 Design your own superhero character - draw them and create a display in the classroom; What does he/she look like? Give them a name What superpower would they have? Primary 5-7 Creative writing exercise Design a superhero - what superpower do they have and how do they use it to help people? Create a story with a beginning, middle and end. Present your story in a comic strip style with illustrations and text. Secondary Project work - plan and hold a fundraising event Work in groups appointing roles such as project lead, communications, finance etc. Create a fundraising event for Cash for Kids Superhero Day (where, when, who). Plan how you will raise the money - sponsorship/selling items/ticket price? Advertise the event/sign people up to take part. Carry out the event as a team. Review the success of your event with a post-campaign analysis report (what went well, what would you change if you did it again etc.) 4

5 case study Daniel aged four. Daniel was diagnosed with a severe form of Austistic Spectrum Disorder when he was very young. Daniel is non-verbal and he cannot speak to communicate. He is very physically active so it can be difficult to look after him as he has no awareness of safety and can easily hurt himself. Sometimes when he is very upset he throws himself about or hits his head against the wall or floor. Daniel also does not sleep well and often he disturbs the whole family during the night. His mum spends most nights sleeping on the floor in his room to make sure he doesn t wake up his older sisters. Daniel s mum is very tired and needs to find a way to make Daniel more comfortable in the night time so the whole family can sleep properly. What could help Daniel sleep? Cash for Kids covered the cost (over 4,500) for a safety bed which is specially made to suit Daniel s needs and will provide a calming environment where he will feel protected and safe. The bed has a tent like feel to it with walls and a floor that are padded to reduce the impact of self-harm when he becomes upset. The door to the safety bed can be zipped up to a height similar to a child gate so an adult can supervise him if necessary. Since receiving the bed, Daniel s sleep pattern has improved and even though he still wakes up during the night, he now stays in bed and plays with toys until he gets back to sleep. Note for teachers: this case study is based on a real situation but names have been changed. Definition of Autism: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability. Signs typically appear during early childhood and affect a person s ability to communicate, and interact with others. ASD is defined by a certain set of behaviours and is a spectrum condition that affects individuals differently and to varying degrees. Some of the behaviours associated with autism include delayed learning of language; difficulty making eye contact or holding a conversation, difficulty with executive functioning, which relates to reasoning and planning, narrow, intense interests, poor motor skills and sensory sensitivities.
