Senior Capstone Career Project Student Name: Madeline Doerr Senior Project English teacher: Dasher Date : May 17, 2017 Designated Timeline: Fall (Summer) Focus: Capstone and Career 1. What is your product? In other words, what will you actually produce? What will be the end result of the application of the skills you acquire? Will you produce a tangible product, such as a piece of furniture or a set of blueprints? Will you use your skills to produce an intangible product, such as an event, a performance, a certification, a donation, service to the community, or a combination of these? Will you produce notes from a job shadowing or internship experience in a composition notebook? How does this project represent your career goals? For my Senior Capstone/ Career project I will be producing a Christmas in July event in which children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) will participate in to produce artwork that I will then photograph and have rendered into holiday greeting cards. I will then sell the cards and donate the funds to the Autism Speaks Non-Profit Organization. In my journalism pathway, I have learned the appropriate photography skills and design skills to create an aesthetically appealing card. In my AP Psychology class, I have found interest in the area of abnormal psychology and am interested in learning more about a career in this field. These greeting cards will be tangible and printed on cardstock, but the event will be intangible. I will use the Christmas in July event, which will feature light refreshments and art supplies for the children with ASD, to produce my product. In addition to this, I will also be job shadowing my project facilitator, Diane Hollander PsyD, BCBA-D, in order to learn more about the diagnosis and treatment of children with ASD. I will produce notes from this experience to record the different procedures that are used in diagnosis and treatment and to record my experiences in the practice in which Dr. Hollander works. I have the desire to also learn about the latest evidence-based treatments, prevalence rates, and research regarding possible causes of ASD. This project represents my career goals as I hope to study a concentration focused on neuroscience and complete courses to satisfy a pre-medical track in undergraduate school. I then plan to attend medical school to earn an MD and though I am not sure what specialty I wish to focus on I feel that my interest in abnormal psychology and my future experiences with Dr. Hollander could influence this decision. Learning about the diagnosis and treatment of ADS will help me to better understand the brain processing differences that account for ASD in children.
2. Is your project a capstone project, a career-related project, or both? My senior project is both a capstone and career-related project. In my senior year, I will have participated in the Yearbook Journalism pathway for three years and will be Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Paragon publication. I will use the photography and design skills that I have learned to take photos of the artwork the children with ASD will have produced and use the design skills to create aesthetically pleasing holiday cards. On the camera I will take the pictures with, I will use my skills to appropriately adjust the aperture, shutter speed, exposure, and other elements to produce the best photo of the canvases possible. As for design, I will use skills pertaining to placement of text and images to create appealing holiday greeting cards. I will also use the writing skills I have obtained in journalism to create messages inside the cards that will be generic enough for use by many people, but will also feel heartfelt. My project is also career related. After taking AP Psychology, I found that I have a great interest in the complexities of abnormal psychology and since ASD is an abnormal psychology disorder I believe it will pique my interest to learn more about the evidence-based treatments, prevalence rates, and research regarding possible causes of ASD. In order to study the clinical field of psychology, I will shadow my project facilitator, Diane Hollander PsyD, BCBA-D in her work at the Georgia Neurobehavioral Associates LLC office. I will take detailed, HIPAA compliant, notes of my experiences with Dr. Hollander in a composition notebook. In my undergraduate college education, I want to study a concentration focused on neuroscience and complete courses to satisfy a pre-medical track and then attend medical school to pursue an MD. I am not sure what specialty I wish to focus on yet but, I feel that my interest in abnormal psychology and my future experiences with Dr. Hollander will contribute to this decision. 3. What skills will you develop during the course of you Senior Capstone Career Project? List three or more skills specific to your project. During the course of my Senior Capstone Career Project, I will learn how to interact and effectively communicate with children who have ASD. Children with ASD also need the environments in which they work in to be set up in a way that is conducive to their learning and is often different that a normal group setting. I will also learn HIPAA regulations that are required for any medical or clinical professional. I will continue learning about printing and publishing a product. Delving into the relationship of pricing and cost of production in order to make a profit will also be a skill I will acquire. I will learn about donating to Nonprofit organizations and how bookkeeping in the workplace works. Behavior that is required to work in a professional office will also be a skill that I will obtain.
4. How will you use these skills in the future? Learning how to interact with children who have ASD will carry over to my future career as an MD since it is highly likely that no matter what field I choose to pursue I will interact with children and adults who have this disorder. In my future interactions with these individuals, I will need to set up an environment in which they feel safe and comfortable in, so learning how to create this space will help me greatly. Learning the HIPAA regulations is something that can help me in future medical or clinical internships and will also be an essential part of my career as a physician. If I ever wish to open my own practice printing and publishing business cards, brochures, and other products needed for a business will be essential and learning how to make a profit will also determine my future success as a physician, especially if I open my own practice. Many physicians decide to donate either their time or funds to Nonprofit organizations and working with one will give me prior experience in what these organizations need and how to contact and correctly donate money to them. In any future career situation, knowing proper office etiquette will help me to not only get a job, but to keep that job and have appropriate relations with co-workers, superiors, and patients. 5. Why have you chosen this product? Growing up, my mom, Allison Doerr, has worked as a psychologist and behavior analysts to treat and improve the lives of children and adolescents with special needs and ASD. Through the stories I have heard about the joy these children bring my Mom, and the interactions I have been privileged enough to have with these children I want to do my part to contribute. I chose to create an event that will allow me to not only create an experience that I hope is engaging and fun for children with ASD, but that will also allow me to raise money and donate the proceeds to the Autism Speaks organization. Autism Speaks is a Non-Profit organization that assists in providing parent and professional resources and funding for research on ASD. For the past few years, I have participated in the Autism Speaks Walk held in Atlanta and have learned about the organization. Even though my contribution may be small in the grand scheme of things, I hope that it may help children and adults with ASD in some way. 6. What previous experience or prior knowledge do you have that relates to your Senior Capstone Career Project? Previous experiences that I have that relate to my Senior Capstone Career Project cover areas from previous interactions with individuals who have ASD to creating visually appealing printed materials. One experience includes my volunteering to work with special needs children in school, and at my Mom s office. I have also learned about what the Autism Speaks organization does through my mom and through the walks they hold nationwide every year. I have learned
about some of the probable causes of ASD in my AP Psychology class and have learned photography, writing, and design skills in my journalism pathway. 7. How will you acquire the skills necessary to produce your product? In order to create my event, Christmas in July, and holiday greeting cards I will meet with my project facilitator, Dr. Diane Hollander, on a regular basis, at least once every two weeks, and will shadow her to learn about her profession. Together we will create a sign-up for patients at her office so they can participate in the Christmas in July event, get the supplies ready for the event, set up for the event in a way that is conducive for ASD children, host the event, produce the holiday greeting cards, sell the cards, and donate the proceeds to the Autism Speaks organization. On my own, I will take photos of the holiday art that the children with ASD will have created on canaveses, will purchase the supplies, get the cards priced, get the cards printed, get the cards packaged for sales, speak to local businesses and friends and family to see if they will sell the holiday greeting cards, distribute the cards to these people or businesses, collect the proceeds from the selling of the cards, donate the proceeds to the Autism Speaks organization, and keep a detailed composition notebook of my experiences during shadowing Dr. Hollander. I will meet with Dr. Hollander at her office located in Downtown Canton. We will meet as many times as necessary to plan a successful event and selling of the holiday greeting cards, but at least once every two weeks. Additionally, we will meet in order for me to shadow her at her office. 8. Who is your project facilitator? What education and/or experience does he or she have that will help you acquire the skills you intend to develop through your Senior Career Capstone Project? Attach his or her business card to the front of your proposal if he or she has one. My project facilitator Diane L. Hollander, Psy.D., BCBA-D, received her undergraduate degree in psychology from the University of Alabama at Birmingham and her masters and doctorate in clinical psychology, with a concentration in child and family psychology, from the Georgia School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University. As a part of her clinical training, Dr. Hollander spent two years at Marcus Autism Center developing and implementing individualized behavioral treatment plans in the language and learning clinic. These plans were based on Applied Behavior Analysis and Applied Verbal Behavior. She completed her course requirements for certification as a behavior analyst from the Florida Institute of Technology and her training was supervised by The Marcus Autism Center. Dr. Hollander is experienced in conducting functional behavior assessments and comprehensive psychoeducational assessments with children and adolescents with severe emotional and behavioral disorders and developmental disabilities. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, Georgia Psychological Association, Association for Behavior Analyst International, Georgia Autism Assessment Collaborative, and the Association of Professional Behavior Analyst. With all of her expertise in
the psychology field and her work with children with ASD she will be able to assist me in creating a successful event that is engaging for the children with ASD. Her experience in private practice will allow me to shadow her and allow her to help me learn about a clinical office environment. (picture of business card attached)
