I am looking forward to an exciting future for our organization. HEAL has such a rich history and so many dedicated resources in our membership. I know that as we move forward to pursue our goals, all of our members will benefit. As President, some of my goals include: 1. Enhancing our Scope of Service through Strategic Planning and investigating a Framework Model, 2. Expanding our networking capabilities, 3. Increasing our membership, 4. Providing additional resources for members, Developing a Mentoring Process and material. The Board members have been very busy and met three times already this year. I cannot thank them enough for their dedication and service to our organization. Due to economic stresses on our employers and increased job responsibilities, the Board decided to meet for a Saturday retreat in Birmingham. We have made the decision to have some meetings in person and other meetings virtual to improve our efficiency. This will hopefully allow Board members to stay actively engaged without the expense of travel. Please take a moment to thank your Region Board Representative. We began the process of developing a Strategic Plan for advancing our organization. We are reviewing our By Laws, Mission and Vision, developing guidelines for improving membership communications and many other things. The Board believes the HEAL organization should pursue professional affiliations and representation to increase awareness and appreciation for the work of its members in healthcare organizations across the state. By encouraging professional development and certification of members, we will increase our strength as resources to our HEAL organization and our employers. My goal is for HEAL to be recognized by health- care organizations across Alabama (even the nation!) as an organization that contributes to the success of professional staff development by promoting quality, safety and leadership. See what exciting learning opportunities we have for you at the Fall Conference. Pam Morgan created an Orientation manual for Board members. We are now putting the final touches on this document. We are discussing specific roles and duties of Board members and encouraging them to mentor region members to increase their involvement in our organization. Also, we are seeking volunteers to assist in documenting the history of our HEAL organization since its inception. For all of you that have been members for a number of years, please send any information to Sarah Joy, Margie Jordan or myself, so we can compile our rich history for future members. A membership recruitment campaign strategy is in its infancy. We would love to hear your ideas. I invite you to join us on this journey to excellence and I welcome your input and words of wisdom as we strive to be the best our organization can be.

Let us After careful review of eight proposals received from several locations around the state, the Board selected Orange Beach as the location for the Fall Conference on October 6 th and 7 th.. The Board used a spreadsheet with specific criteria to review proposals and select a location and facility. We selected a brand new Hampton Inn facility. The Hampton Inn allows you to choose your room rate from $99 to $129/ night based on room view. The hotel also agreed to extend the weekday rate we are paying over into the weekend for members who want to stay a couple of days longer. (The Shrimp festival is that weekend.) We felt like these rates would enable more members to attend and offset fuel prices. It is a very reasonable Conference fee and room rate for the value. They have a 3750 sq. foot conference center and many amenities. You cannot beat the combination of quality speakers, price, and location. After all, Orange Beach / Gulf Shores is Alabama s piece of paradise! Our Goal is to have at least 75 members attend. (See room reservation information below.) We need a minimum of 10 vendors. Please send possible vendor names to Linda Evans at Linda.Evans@helenkeller.com. We need to get those vendors finalized by June. We have reviewed 2010 post conference evaluations and surveys, in addition to looking at future trends, and selected state and national speakers to enhance our conference. We want the conference to enhance your learning and energize you to achieve your professional goals. We are changing the format slightly and adding a Keynote address. We will extend the conference on Friday to 1pm to cover all the exciting topics. It will be jam packed (a lot for your money!!!) New speakers include Judi Miller who will address how to begin the process of pursuing simulation training on a small budget to large scale. Ms. Miller has spoken at several national and international conferences on Simulation lab training. Jan Luke, also a national speaker, (NNSDO conference) will be our Keynote speaker and provide another educational session on Thursday as well. We are pleased to invite Genell Lee back from ABN. She is always entertaining. We had several request for Judith Atkins with McKenna and Associates to discuss the never ending and ever changing challenge of meeting Joint Commission standards from an educator s perspective. We are finalizing the last speaker on Friday. We have a speaker lined up to address Quality Initiatives training using LEAN approach. Watch for more details in Conference brochure. 3 Inside Story Headline The Northwest Region of HEAL (NAHEC- North Alabama Health Educator s Council) did not meet for our May meeting due to the disaster that struck our area. Many of our facilities had to reschedule orientation and training due to loss of power. This region hosts a conference annually in the 3 rd quarter meeting. This year the conference will be held at Huntsville Hospital on August 19 th. We will have a luau theme. If you attended the 2010 Nor thwest Conference Infor mation HEAL conference in Montgomery you heard Jason Willoughby speak on the Millennial Generation. His presentation was very enlightening and fun. He and Genell Lee from the ABN will be our speakers.
