1 UWA Band Detailed Assessment Report Mission / Purpose The mission of the University of West Alabama Band is to provide a positive environment for students to learn and perform music as an extracurricular activity. I. Goals and Outcomes/Objectives, with Any Related Measures, Targets, Findings, and Action Plans A. Goal: Raise retention Raise student retention and graduation rates through enhanced academic support and student counseling and improved quality of extracurricular experience. 1. Objective: Strengthen leadership skills of students involved in UWA Band Students involved in UWA Band will demonstrate strengthened leadership skills. a. Measure: Students will strengthen leadership skills Students completing the Student Affairs Survey will indicate that they are satisfied that their leadership skills have improved due to their involvement with UWA Band. 1. Achievement Target: 50% of students will indicate increased leadership skills due to involvement in the UWA Band. 2. Findings ( ) - Target: Partially Met Students have been involved in a wide variety of organizations (both Greek and Non Greek) and have self-reported that they have become leaders (officers, peer leaders, supervisors) of these organizations. 3. Action Plan: Self-Reporting Survey In order to better assess student involvement in activities other than band, director would like to implement a brief survey on student campus involvement. Established in Cycle: Implementation Status: Planned Relationships (Measure Outcome/Objective): Measure: Students will strengthen leadership skills Outcome/Objective: Strengthen leadership skills of students involved in UWA Band Implementation Description: A brief survey will be published online for the UWA Band students. Goal: Address the educational, social, and cultural needs of the overall student body. Address the educational, social, and cultural needs of the overall student body. 1. 2 Students involved with UWA Band will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities both on campus and off campus. a. Measure: Participation in on campus and off campus activities Students involved in the UWA Band will be given the opportunity to participate in both on campus and off campus activities throughout the year. The UWA Band serves as both a recruiting and public relations tool to support the University in its mission. 1. Achievement Target: UWA Band will participate in five on campus and off campus activities throughout the year. 2. Findings ( ) - Target: Met UWA Band Performances: -Marching Band: 5 UWA Home football games; "Move In Day" for on campus students; The Grand opening of the Blackbelt Museum's "Hometown Heroes" Exhibit; Christmas On The River Parade; Demopolis, AL; Crewe of Columbus Mardi Gras Parade; Mobile, AL; Crewe of Endymion Mardi Gras Parade; New Orleans, LA -Basketball Pep Band: -14 UWA Basketball Games (Regular Season) -Small Ensemble: performed for Commencement Exercises -Wind Ensemble: Performed at the Livingston Christmas Tree Lighting; performed for the UWA Campus Christmas Tree Lighting and performed Christmas Carols for the UWA Campus School Students -Sextet: Performed as a prelude to the UWA Choir Christmas Concert II. Other Plans for Improvement A. Activities and Travel Activities and travel for UWA Band to include: Hosting the ABA District V Honor Band; participating in the AL Higher Education Day rally in Montgomery; participating in the Crewe of Columbus Mardi Gras parade in Mobile, AL, Krewe of Endymion Mardi Gras Parade in New Orleans, LA.; a planned recruiting performance (Exhibition) of UWA Marching Band during fall and a planned Jazz Band/Percussion Ensemble recruiting tour. Established in Cycle: Implementation Status: Planned Implementation Description: Coordinate with Director of Student Activities Responsible Person/Group: Adam Anderson; Mark Turner; Jason Gardner Additional Resources Requested: Honor Band=$800; Higher Ed Day=$3500; Mardi Gras Parade=$20000; Jazz/Perc. Ensemble tour=$5000; Exhibition Performance=$500 Budget Amount Requested: $29, (recurring) B. Purchase new uniforms for the UWA Marching Band Purchase new uniform coats and plumes for the UWA Marching Band. Established in Cycle: Implementation Status: In-Progress Implementation Description: Purchase new uniforms for Band Responsible Person/Group: Adam Anderson; Jason Gardner Additional Resources Requested: Uniform Coats = $60,000; Plumes = $2000 Budget Amount Requested: $65, (one time) Implementation Notes: 10/13/2017 New Uniform Coats have been purchased. Office will purchase new bibbers (pants) and plumes as needed. Page 2 of 4
3 C. Leadership Training Office will be providing workshops and other avenues to further the quality of leadership skills of UWA Band students. This was begun with the entire program attending Dr. Joe Martin during Band Camp. Established in Cycle: Implementation Status: In-Progress Implementation Description: This will be implemented based on student schedules/availability, as well as, campus calendar. Projected Completion Date: 04/20/2017 Responsible Person/Group: Adam Anderson Implementation Notes: 10/13/2017 Students attended speaker Dr. Joe Martin during Band Camp. Further opportunities will be provided this school year. Staff would like to continue to bring new activities for the UWA Band students. D. Established in Cycle: Implementation Status: Finished Implementation Description: Purchase music, drill, equipment and instructors/choreography for halftime performances. Projected Completion Date: 08/01/2016 Responsible Person/Group: Adam Anderson; Mark Turner Additional Resources Requested: $1000-Music; $1500-Drill; $3500-Equipment; $5000- Choreo/Instructors III. Analysis Questions and Analysis Answers A. What specific strengths did your assessments show? (Strengths) Students felt that Band has strengthened their ability to participate and/or lead group work in classes and other organizations. B. What specific weaknesses or challenges did your assessments show? (Weaknesses) Overall there were not many weaknesses reported in the Classroom Climate Survey. One mentioned weakness was that there was not enough student participation in planning/running the Band. Page 3 of 4
4 C. What plans were implemented? A greater degree of student leadership/accountability was placed on the students this year. Purchasing of new uniforms was again approached. D. What plans were not implemented? Repairs to the Band Hall; Hiring of a new Assistant Director (SP17) E. How will assessment results be used for continuous improvement? Assessment by the Classroom Climate Survey will be used to alter or implement any changes that may be necessary to better UWA students. All comments/critiques made by the students have been noted and if any change is warranted, it will be worked into the administration of the UWA Band for the academic year. IV. Annual Report Section Responses A. Key Achievements Students represented the University very well with their performances throughout the year. The UWA Band was invited to perform at the Imagine Music Festival in Atlanta, GA (not typical for University Bands). B. Faculty Achievements Mr. Adam Anderson, Director of Bands, was chosen to be a member of the Salyer's Percussion Education Team (1 of 4 current selections). C. Public/Community Service The brothers of Phi Boota Roota percussion Fraternity put on a Drum Petting Zoo for the UWA Campus School. The Christmas Ensemble performed Christmas Carols for the students at the UWA Campus School. The Marching Band performed for the Hometown Heroes exhibit downtown. Wind Ensemble performed for the Livingston Community Christmas Tree Lighting downtown. Page 4 of 4

Outcomes/Objectives Outcomes and objectives are statements that describe in some detail what the unit plans to accomplish. Outcomes/objectives are associated with all applicable goals, strategic plans, standards, and institutional priorities. Objectives are active-verb descriptions of specific points or tasks the unit will accomplish or reach. Outcomes are active-verb descriptions of a desired end result related to student learning and the unit's mission. Measures Measures are statements to judge success in achieving the stated outcome or objective. Measures contain information on the type of evidence and assessment tool that a unit will use to verify if stated outcome/objective has been met. Achievement Targets Achievement targets are the thresholds that the measures must meet for the unit to determine that it has been successful in meeting its specified outcomes/objectives. 6 Findings Findings are indications whether an outcome/objective was met or not. Findings are put into the system under each achievement target. Findings include an interpretation ofresults, possible uses of results, reflection on problems encountered, indicated improvements/changes and strengths or weakness. Action Plans Action plans are detailed plans created by the unit to meet an outcome/objective that was only partially met or not met or to make improvement to those outcomes/objectives that were met but still need some strengthening. The plan includes a projected completion date, implementation description, responsible person(s)/group, resources required, and budget amount (if applicable).
