Ceres Unified School District 2503 Lawrence Street Sponsored by: Ceres, CA Meeting Minutes November 9 th, 2016 Welcome Julie Lynn Martin-Borba, Collaborative Coordinator Agenda review Julie thanked the following individuals for supporting the efforts of this group and in making each meeting a success. The City of Ceres for providing the facility space for each meeting The Ceres Unified School District for providing the staff time for coordination of the Collaborative The Ceres Unified Grants Department staff for countless hours toward meeting preparation and set up. School sites for providing staff time to assist with inviting parents and to attend the meetings. Local business and community representatives for attending and supporting the efforts of the City and school district in providing programs and services to all the families and children of the Ceres community. 1. Information Presentation 1. A Big Idea: Ceres Drop-In For Youth Ken Sylvia, Director of Mentoring, Youth for Christ There are students in Junior High and High School in Ceres. Estimated 1500 Jr High and High School students walk out of school/left unsupervised. When kids do not have somewhere to go after school, they tend to get in to trouble. Proposing to create a one-stop-shop for youths to go to from 3-8PM to keep them in a safe place afterschool. Ideal location would be a square foot warehouse/office space with an activity center, computer lab, indoor sports area, and snack shack. Looking to form a committee to continue developing his idea. Parent Cafe Jennifer Rangel, Coordinator, Ceres Partnership for Healthy Children Parents Cafes engage parents in meaningful conversations about their family and how to strengthen that family by building protective factors. Five protective factors are: Parental Resilience, Concrete Support, Social Connections, Social & Emotional Competence of Children, and Knowledge of Parenting & Child Development. Mission Statement: The Ceres Community Collaborative is committed to meeting the needs of the families of Ceres and the surrounding community. We are dedicated to coordinating resources that empower and support individuals and families to learn and grow.

2 Parents Cafes now have 77 total facilitators. Sessions are led by parents with a facilitator. Participants are welcomed, go over the agreements, protective factors, and have one/one questions. Participation has increased student attendance and improved family connections. Monthly newsletter available, must give contact info to receive it. Upcoming Activities Crystel Aguilar, Recreation Coordinator, City of Ceres Parks and Recreation Ski Week Day Camp: 2/13/17-2/20/17, 8am-3PM for Kids ages 5-12 at Ceres Community Center. $25 fee per day, must register by 2/4/17 Enrichment activities, crafts, indoor/outdoor with Recreational Specialist Angela Mendoza. Christmas Tree Festival, Parade, and Opening of Christmas Tree Lane: 12/3/16, 5:30PM-7:30PM, Smyrna Park, Free Event Local performers, Santa s Village, crafts, sweet shop, face painting Parade starts at 7:30PM Other activities outlined in City of Ceres Winter-Spring Activity Guide For more information please contact the Ceres Parks and Recreation Department at Free Community Programs Ricard Jimenez, Doug Wever, AAA Car Seat Inspection: Call to schedule free car seat inspection, (approx. 1 hour) at AAA in Turlock For more information please contact AAA at School Safety Patrol: Aims to help schools gain control of school zones by allowing students to take a leadership role. Principal/Vice Principal registers for the program. All equipment and supplies are free. For more information visit: Schoolsafety.calstate.AAA.com 3. Project YES Dustin Pack, Administrative Assistant, Ceres Unified School District Project YES is dedicated to helping youth ages who wish to be employed. This program is free. Program offers employment opportunities in career pathways such as: Customer Service, Retail, Truck Driving, and Welding. Youth can sign up for these programs at the Project Yes office on the Hanline campus or call the main office at Eligible participants must not be in school or currently employed. 4. Turkey Trot - Ken Sylvia, Director of Mentoring, Youth for Christ 5K/3 Mile Walk/Run Turkey Trot located at Ceres Christian Church will be 11/24/16, check in at 7AM, race starting at 8AM Mission Statement: The Ceres Community Collaborative is committed to meeting the needs of the families of Ceres and the surrounding community. 3 Cost is $25 per person, all proceeds after costs to host event will go to Walter White and Westport Elementary Schools. Must register by 11/14/16 to guarantee a shirt 5. ASES Survey Alma Ayala, Administrative Assistant, ASES Creative Learning Center ASES After School Program Community Survey is conducted yearly to receive feedback on programs from parents. Survey was provided to attendees of the meeting. Unsupervised, alone, marginalized and disconnected, wandering, following drama Looking for something to do, relationships, opportunities, purpose, connections Connecting meaningful good programs in a onestop-shop to enhance relationships

9 Large warehouse 12,000-15,000 square feet x greater than an NBA size basketball court Office space area (generate income/share expenses) Activity center (air hockey, foosball, etc.) Homework, computer lab, study area Indoor basketball/soccer/volleyball, etc. Potential snack shack (job training, income) Potential to provide employment to local youth as assistants Open after school from 3-8pm, and provide central location for events
