Integrating Inclusive Practices and Facilitating Meaningful Events on Diversity Ashley L. Pryor, Interim Director La Rez Wilson, Community Relations Coordinator

Overview Welcome Understanding Diversity, Culture, Inclusion Exploring Social Identity Wheel Application of Concepts for Programming Discuss events as a group Take- A- Ways Close

By raise of hands: 1.Has organized and implemented diversity and culture programming with their groups? 2. Wants to do programming but is a little lost on how to start? 3. Looking for new ideas to elevate the diversity programming they currently have?

Review of Category I Event: Diversity/Culture Category I Events: Diversity/Culture is an event that serves to educate and/or celebrate differences among people within local and national communities. Examples: Attend a local event centered on culture, such as: Irish Festival, Latin American Parade, Pride, or Jazz & Ribs Fest Invite speakers to present on diversity/culture topics**** Participate in a march that aims to raise awareness of diversity/culture issues Attend a museum, such as the Underground Railroad in Cincinnati or the Holocaust museum in Washington, DC, followed by a facilitated group discussion afterwards Go see a film with strong historical and/or social justice themes, such as Milk or The Help, followed by a facilitated group discussion afterwards

Why is Diversity a Conversation? Increase number of groups participating in Diversity/Culture events for Category I offerings Expand beyond just going to a festival that celebrates a specific culture or group Diversity/Culture is an event that serves to educate and/or celebrate differences among people within local and national communities. Ex. LA Screening of RACEà Ash Have a better definition(s) and verbiage about diversity, culture, and inclusion. We live in a diverse world and have alumni who represent them and we want to support them in our respective groups, just as we do on campus for students, staff, and faculty. Difference between welcoming v. tolerating Diversity and Culture events can be hard to plan due to unclear definitions, overuse and over simplified, Triggering, Tokenism

Learning Outcomes for Discussion à To develop a variety of ways to engage, learn, and appreciate various Social Identity groups. à To understand the importance of diversity in communities and society as a whole. à To maintain an open mind when engaging in diverse environments. à Brainstorm ways to expand engagement of alumni in meaningful and impactful cultural or diversity programming regionally. Goal: Don t do Diversity- Lite v. do Diversity Right à Doesn t have to take up a lot of time

What is Diversity? Definition?... a range of things The differences among individuals (race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio- economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs, political beliefs, or other ideologies) à Variety of individuals working together à Variety of ideas from different perspectives put together for a greater purpose

Culture Definition Definition?... à Ideas, values, beliefs, and behaviors of people/social groups in society à Systems of knowledge shared by groups of people à A way of life

What is Inclusion and What does it look like? à Joining of various groups and individuals with different backgrounds, values, and beliefs à Involvement and empowerment of all people à Change and acceptance à Making a smaller group a part of a larger one A strategy to leverage diversity. Diversity always exists in social systems. Inclusion, on the other hand, must be created. In order to leverage diversity, an environment must be created where people feel supported, listened to and able to do their personal best. - La Rez Wilson

Social Identity Wheel Diversity Programming that is not one dimensional and beyond the Black/White or ethnic conversation Ex. Special Play for Buckeyes Ex. Networkingà For those who are management or owners have a HR professional or diversity consultant come in to talk about hiring practices that are inclusive or how to build a culture of inclusion. Ex. Local Mattersà Food Justiceà SNAPS Ex. Poverty Simulation attend as a group

Social Identity Wheel Ohio State University Retiree Association- tour and presentation at Noor Islamic Center Nursing Alumni Society- Men in Nursing networking event Health Services Management & Policy Society Diversity Breakfast College of Medicine Girls Night Out, networking event with female alumnae and current female students DC Alumni Club and Black Alumni Society Screening of Hidden Figures College of Social Work, College of Education & Human Ecology, Knowlton School of Architect, Cheerleaders and Dance Team March in Gay Pride Parade Scarlet & Gay Pride Night at OSU Women s Basketball game Houston s Pride Marchà being a float

Social Identity Wheel Orange County s - Walk the Farm Event (a Charity Walk to assist Japanese Farmers) Detroit s - Spring holiday Cultural Dessert Share Atlanta s - tour of the MLK Heritage Site & Visit to the Ebenezer Baptist Church NYC- Social Change Funding raising Happy Hour Atlanta, Civil Rights Museum, Speaker and Social Change Facilitation

What does honoring diversity and culture through inclusion look like in practice? Reflections What stuck with you? Unpacking feelings and thoughts for moving forward Speakers/Facilitations Ex. Before attending PRIDE parade, bring in a speaker about what are some of the issues or topics of policy impacting the LGBTQAI community Ex. After moving screening, have a paper for them to fill out with guided questions or speaker facilitated activity after Or panel discussion Questions and answers need to be asked before programing? Raise conscientiousness Celebrate and honor difference Is this educational? And participants have an impactful experience in connecting in community? Ex. Who is your target audience? Who was included in the planning process? What do you hope they get out of this experience? Could this be offensive? And Why? Who did we invite and do we need to expand our list?

Tips: Research population/culture before attending event and use what is learned when engaging with various populations at event (have specific questions to look for) Scavenger hunt with facts and questions then come together as a group to reflect on thoughts When going to food festivals, write down 2-3 new things you tried and a brief description of what it is and the background of it Engage in conversation with at least two people- what was discussed and what did you learn about the culture from speaking with individuals Ex. After moving screening, have a paper for them to fill out with guided questions
