2 WELCOME It has now been more than 100 years since Baylor Health Care System began providing quality cancer care to this community. While our mission has not changed, the evolution of the tools available to diagnose and treat this disease has transformed the way cancer care is delivered. Today, we mark a new era of health care in North Texas with the opening of one of the most comprehensive cancer programs in the country. Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas will feature advanced research capabilities and fresh therapeutic approaches in a soothing, supportive environment. Designed with the patient and their family in mind, the new cancer center will make the journey from diagnosis to recovery smoother and more comfortable. Cancer is now the second-leading cause of death in Texas and the number of cases is expected to increase. Baylor Sammons Cancer Center ensures that North Texans, for generations to come, will have access to advanced treatments, research and education all under one roof. When we look back years from now, we will mark this as the day we opened an internationally renowned medical destination for cancer care. 3 A new eraof Cancer Care Paid Advertising Supplement The first thing you notice about the newly built Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas is its spectacular 10-story curved design, skillfully crafted from steel and glass. But it s what s inside that holds the key to a new era of cancer care in North Texas. At 467,000 square feet, the new outpatient cancer center is the largest of its kind in North Texas. It will offer education, preventive care, support services, diagnostic testing and advanced technology. Cancer research programs will be enhanced and the facility will also offer integrative therapies for cancer treatment, toptier medical staff and an expanded outpatient radiation center and chemotherapy infusion center. It also will attract new clinical trials and new researchers and scientists who want to work at the innovative center. Baylor Sammons Cancer Center provides a reason for cancer patients to receive their treatment in Dallas. We want people in North Texas to have the confidence to stay in Dallas, and not have to travel to other places to seek advanced clinical therapies, said John McWhorter, president, Baylor University Medical Center, and executive vice president, Baylor Health Care System. We want to have available to the patient a significant number of phase one clinical trials. We want people to know if you have cancer, you have access to a clinical trial. Patti Clapp, vice president at the Dallas Regional Chamber, said the addition of Baylor Sammons Cancer Center will add to the area s recognition as both a patient care center and a strong research center for cancer. The reputation of this area to attract cancer patients and keep cancer patients in Dallas for treatment will be enhanced as the facilities focused on cancer increase and expand and are recognized for their patient care and research capabilities, she said. ADDING MORE QUALITY RESEARCHERS Baylor Sammons Cancer Center initiated a working collaboration with Dr. Daniel Von Hoff, a renowned cancer researcher, to help develop its Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC). Von Hoff, who served on President George W. Bush s National Cancer Advisory Board, has helped develop more than 200 cancer drugs. Von Hoff is currently physician-inchief at the Translational Drug Development Institute in Phoenix and also chief scientific officer for both Scottsdale Healthcare and US Oncology. Dr. Alan M. 4 Putting the Patient First at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center It was just a little cough. Paul Miller barely noticed it at first but the cough wouldn t go away. Finally, that annoying little cough became a problem Miller could no longer ignore. After mentioning the persistent cough to his doctor, a chest x-ray revealed lung cancer. It s such a psychological blow, Miller recalls. So many things go through your mind. First: I m dying. Then: I can work through this. But then, Where do I go, who do I see now? Miller s wife s had been treated at a Baylor facility in 2007 and the Miller family was pleased with her care. So choosing Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas for his cancer treatment was an easy choice for Paul. Everybody at Baylor was concerned not just about my cancer, but about my well being, said Miller, president of MPM Medical Inc. in Irving. That was the kind of care I got, and it was exactly the care that my wife received. Miller said he was comforted by the staff s upbeat manner, the way his physician communicated exactly how treatments would affect him, and that he could call at any moment of the day and get a prompt response. I m now a survivor, he said. I m now a survivor, Paul Miller individualized consultation and receive personalized recommendations on how to optimize their health during and after their treatment. The services and classes available through the Integrative Medicine program include music therapy, art therapy and yoga. Small classes of about four to six people each will cover topics on nutrition, relaxation, sleep and exercise. These classes will provide invaluable, actionable information, and will create a network among patients and survivors who share this life-changing experience, she said. PATIENT EXPERIENCE DRIVES BUILDING PLAN When the Baylor Health Care System team asked patients and visitors what they wanted to see incorporated into the new Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, the answers were truly eye opening to us, especially the doctors, said Donna Bowers, vice president of Oncology Services for Baylor Health Care System. The team discovered that parking, way finding, signage, convenient services, food and comfort affects the patient experience, but is regularly overlooked at other facilities. Not here. Patient needs were considered from the earliest stages of development and everything was created from their perspective from the way the building is laid out and decorated to the services and programs provided. When we were developing this cancer center, an absolute must was that the building should have timeless elegance, said Bowers, who noted there is no institutional lighting in the 10-story building. That patient focus can be seen in the creative fixtures, the peaceful chapel and a store where cancer patients can be outfitted with a wig or prosthesis between treatments. Natural elements were used as much as possible in the design, and even help navigate through the building. For example, every floor s elevator bank has a unique glass treatment that serves as a landmark for visitors. Cancer patients often bring family members or friends with them to treatment appointments, which creates an increased need for seating, dining and services. The center has free wireless Internet access, boasts a full-service restaurant and features more than 800 pieces of art. An outdoor healing garden offers an area of private reflection with water features, benches and a theater. I m excited for the patients, said Bowers, of the cancer center opening. I truly believe Baylor built it for them. the mind, body and soul. patient as a whole. 5 Clinical trials form the backbone of Baylor s research Jake Dean Thirty years ago, one-out-of-two patients who developed cancer died from the disease. Today that number is one in three. That means that two-out-of-three people survive their cancer, Dr. Alan Miller, medical director, Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, chief of oncology, Baylor Health Care System said. There are now between 12 million and 14 million cancer survivors in the United States. That s progress, but we can do better. One reason for the improved survival rates are the advances in cancer treatment thanks to cancer research. Researchers have helped develop new, more effective treatments while helping boost cancer education and prevention. Clinical trials are the foundation of cancer research and patients at the Baylor Sammons Cancer Center will be able to participate in numerous trials. We usually have over 100 trials available, covering most different types of cancer, said Dr Miller. Last year, 800 patients participated in these trials. A phase one clinical trial is just one stage of the four phase research process. Trials are carefully conducted to determine whether a new drug, device or treatment is safe and effective. Often patients whose disease has resisted all standard options will consider participating in a phase one trial. Paid Advertising Supplement These trials hold out additional hope for individuals while creating hope for a larger group of people if the results are promising, Dr. Miller said. The new Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) will be the centerpiece of clinical research at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, offering research trials that may not be available anywhere else, or may be available only at a limited number of facilities around the world. Dr. Daniel Von Hoff will collaborate with Dr. Miller in developing the ICTC at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center. Dr. Von Hoff is a leader in precision medicine sometimes called personalized medicine which tailors cancer treatment to the biology and genetics of each individual patient s tumor. Precision medicine will be one of the primary focuses of researchers at the ICTC. Baylor Research Institute (BRI) is dedicated to bringing the latest in research directly to the patient. BRI recently announced a three-year collaboration agreement with Roche, a Swiss biotech company, to jointly develop programs emerging from Baylor Institute for Immunology Research. The program will focus on cancer vaccines, among other areas. Now we have a working relationship that can support our research with funding and additional expertise, said Dr. Michael Ramsay, president of Baylor Research Institute. Coinciding with the new Baylor Sammons Cancer Center, to have that kind of muscle power Groundbreaking research, Groundbreaking results Dr. Joyce O Shaughnessy, Baylor s Celebrating Women Endowed Chair in Breast Cancer Research, is leading a trial looking at triple negative breast cancer, one of the most aggressive forms of breast cancer. In this clinical trial, the complete gene sequence of a patient s tumor is being determined and specific targets are being investigated that could be the Achilles heel of that tumor. The first patient a Baylor patient has already had her tumor sequenced and three targets have been identified to guide her future treatment. At Baylor Institute for Immunology Research, a team is developing a series of cancer vaccines based on Dr. Joyce O Shaughnessy dendritic cells. These cells are part of our immune system that help attack the cancer. Baylor has several encouraging clinical trials using these vaccines. A team is working on colon cancer genetics and causes. 6 Chief of Oncology, Dr. Alan Miller: A Passion to improve patients lives Dr. Alan Miller, M.D., Ph.D. Chief of Oncology for Baylor Health Care System, Medical Director, Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center Has responsibility for the oversight and growth of all aspects of cancer clinical care, research and education at Baylor Health Care System Previously held positions at Tulane University in Louisiana, the University of Miami and the University of Florida Earned an M.D. from the University of Miami School of Medicine, a Ph.D. and masters in physiology and a bachelor s degree in biology from the State University of New York in Buffalo Has received nearly $20 million in research grants and contracts It s one thing to see results in a petri dish, and another thing to see the results in helping another person. Dr. Alan Miller Despite his years of advanced training and professional experience, nothing could have prepared Dr. Alan Miller for the call of duty he faced in New Orleans in Shortly after Hurricane Katrina devastated the city, Dr. Miller joined a small group of Tulane University administrators in Houston with the task of putting a great university back together. In addition to his primary tasks of locating Tulane s patients and physicians and reestablishing the health care infrastructure, Dr. Miller was also tasked with locating a cruise ship that would serve as lodging for displaced Tulane students and faculty. My medical training did not prepare me for that, he said. Dr. Miller was serving as associate senior vice president for health sciences at Tulane University. There was no time to decide whether he was the most capable for the assignment, he just jumped in and did it. He brings that same determination and commitment to success to his position as chief of oncology for Baylor Health Care System, and medical director of Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center. Dr. Miller joined Baylor Health Care System in 2008, helping to expand the cancer center s footprint in North Texas and beyond. Those who know him can attest to Dr. Miller s desire and incredible opportunity to affect the lives of so many with the opening of the new Baylor Sammons Cancer Center. Helping people was what drew him to medicine in the first place. After earning his masters and Ph.D. in biology from the State University of New York in Buffalo, Dr. Miller attended the University of Miami for a post doctoral fellowship. It was there that he discovered another dimension of healthcare. When I could see what it was like to work with patients, I saw that it was something that it would allow me to accomplish more., Dr. Miller said. It s one thing to see results in a petri dish, and another thing to see the results in helping another person. He returned to school to earn his medical degree from The University of Miami School of Medicine. Dr. Miller is rewarded daily with faculty and staff interactions. I ask myself, What can I do today to make it easier for people in our institution do what they do, better? When you have an opportunity to teach, an opportunity to provide infrastructure and resources to people coming up in your field, and to help them reach their maximum capability, that s really rewarding, he said. Dr. Miller s research and clinical activity focus on blood and stem cell regulation. He has published dozens of articles in peer-reviewed journals on these subjects. He has brought his passion for cancer research to Baylor, spearheading the development of the Innovative Clinical Trials Center (ICTC) at the new Baylor Sammons Cancer Center. The ICTC will recruit the most promising cancer clinical trials from around the world to Baylor, giving patients who have undergone other unsuccessful therapies renewed hope. Since 1996, Dr. Miller has been continuously honored as one of the Top Doctors in America in Oncology In his off time, Dr. Miller is open to new adventures. I check out the things I do very carefully, just like when I make recommendations to my patients, he said. That hasn t stopped him from zip lining through the treetops of Costa Rica, though. He doesn t have an official bucket list ( What would you do when you ve crossed everything off the list? he asks), but he enjoys those once-in-a-lifetime opportunities as much as the next guy. He attended Wimbledon for the first time last year as well as his first NASCAR race. He enjoys the Dallas Symphony, the Performing Arts Center in Dallas and the area s many professional sporting events. I ve even been to that big spaceship in Arlington to see the Cowboys, he said. It sounds like Texas is making as big an impact on Dr. Miller as he is on Texas. 6 March 25, 2011 Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center at Dallas Paid Advertising Supplement

7 Baylor seeks the gold standard of green Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center was designed to bring health and wellness to patients while treading lightly on the environment. The building project is seeking LEED Gold certification by the U.S. Green Building Council, the organization that sets the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) standards for environmentally responsible design and construction. This kind of recognition doesn t come easy. The stringent standards set by the USGBC require a construction project to result in a sustainable building and ensure the building process is environmentally responsible as well. For example, not only is the new cancer center powered with 100 percent renewable energy, more than 96 percent of its construction waste was diverted from landfills to recycling centers. By choosing Perkins + Will to design the center, Baylor made its intentions known for an environmentally responsible building. The architecture firm is a long-time advocate of sustainable design. In 2007, it was the first multioffice company to commit to the 2030 Challenge, pledging to immediately move toward designing buildings that reach carbon neutrality by It was a mutually agreed-upon strategy, said Tom Reisenbichler, managing director at Perkins + Will and one of the lead designers for the cancer center. Partly because it s the right thing to do, but also because it s an important part of Baylor s mission to educate and communicate to the community that it s not just about health care, it s about healthy living. It s also about taking extra care to provide the most healing atmosphere possible. Baylor s LEED Gold certification is one more assurance to patients, visitors and staff that everyone s health is taken seriously at Baylor Sammons Cancer Center. SOME HIGHLIGHTS Powered with 100% renewable energy The core and shell of the building uses more than 23% recycled content The building incorporated low volatile organic compounds (VOCs), omitting VOCs that are known to contribute to the cause of cancer The carbon footprint offset by the Outpatient Cancer Center is estimated at 3.4 million pounds the equivalent to more than 3.7 million miles of driving During construction, 90% green power was used Total construction waste diverted from landfills to recycling centers exceeds 96% Making a difference Philanthropic contributions help shape communities and propel advancements in health care that change people s lives. Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center is a shining example of one man s commitment to improving health care for both of his sisters who were afflicted by cancer. For more than 50 years, Charles A. Sammons and his company Sammons Enterprises Inc. have contributed to Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas and offered up challenge gifts to inspire others to give. Their latest contribution of more than $20 million benefits North Texas largest outpatient cancer center. Paid Advertising Supplement Charles A. Sammons Cancer research and education were important to Mr. Sammons, said Rowland K. Robinson, president of Baylor Health Care System Foundation. He had two sisters diagnosed with cancer in the 70s and he realized at that time more could and should be done to fight the disease. The Sammons family and companies have long supported Baylor University Medical Center and its dedication to finding a cure. The new cancer center is an innovative medical destination, providing multi-disciplinary care through patient treatment, clinical research, medical education and community outreach. Thanks to the generosity of the Sammons family and companies, Baylor Health Care System will remain at the forefront in the fight against cancer, Robinson said. Although the outpatient cancer center is complete, our work to provide patients advanced cancer care is not, he added, noting the first dedicated inpatient cancer hospital in North Texas is scheduled for completion in Battling cancer is an ongoing process and Baylor Health Care System is dedicated to providing advanced cancer treatment here in North Texas, Robinson said. Baylor Health Care System Foundation is a not-for-profit organization that raises and manages charitable funds to support Baylor Health Care System. The foundation has seen its assets grow from $5 million in 1978 to over $300 million. Annually, it receives support from more than 10,000 donors, which include individuals, corporations and other foundations. 8 Building a landmark for healing 1Concierge and valet parking make the patient experience easier Martha Foster Skiles Healing Garden - Lovie s Garden provides a peaceful, outdoor respite for guests Atrium Chapel When Baylor Health Care System boldly began its pursuit to create an advanced cancer center and iconic Dallas landmark, it chose leaders in real estate and building design that would ensure success. Looking at Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center, it s clear they ve achieved that ambitious goal. The 10-story, crescent-shaped steel and glass building was designed to embrace visitors and inspire hope. Natural light, expansive views and warm, hotel-level finishes offer patients a first glimpse of the unmatched care they can expect to receive. Baylor Sammons Cancer Center is the largest outpatient cancer center in North Texas, and it s the largest cancer center that Perkins + Will has undertaken as an individual project, which is saying a lot. The architecture firm, founded in 1935, has a global health care practice. Creating a center that demonstrates Baylor s considerable commitment to cancer care and research was no easy task. Baylor was really focused on creating a healing environment for its patients, said Tom Reisenbichler, managing director at Perkins + Will and one of the lead designers for the cancer center. And this building goes a long way in terms of lifting patients spirits and establishing a new level of cancer treatment in the region. The building s accessibility via DART, a two-level underground parking area and centrally located elevator banks minimize the walking distance to treatment areas. A sky bridge links the future inpatient cancer hospital and outpatient center and features shops, patient services and areas of respite along the way. Much consideration was given to those who will spend long periods of time at the facility. There are social environments to meet over coffee or a meal, a patient resources library and more private, comfortable areas for quiet reflection. Collaboration lounges for staff, educators and researchers are provided throughout the facility The size and scope of the facility make it possible for all cancer care to be provided under one roof. We like to say this is Baylor s Taj Mahal, said Matthew Smith, senior project manager for Duke Realty. Duke Realty owns the center and leases it back to Baylor Health Care System and Texas Oncology. I think we have a fantastic relationship. It s a true collaboration, Smith said. And as complicated as this project is, it s been one of the most fun and energetic I ve been a part of. Constructing a piece of the Dallas skyline is a coup for anyone working in real estate, but the real reward has been in creating a place of healing for so many. Hopefully this center brings some sort of comfort and hope to people, Smith said. And to know that we were part of creating that, you can t put that into words. 10 Continued from PAGE 3 chief of oncology of Baylor University Medical Center, said Von Hoff is a leader in precision medicine, which tailors cancer treatment to the biology and genetics of an individual patient s tumor. Besides helping guide Baylor s precision medicine program, year-long consultant Von Hoff will assist Baylor investigators in identifying and bringing promising clinical trials and studies to Baylor, as well as help recruit physician scientists to ICTC. We are currently recruiting doctors from well known cancer centers across the country. McWhorter said. The new cancer center with additional space and amenities allow us to bring in additional top-notch clinicians. It is a tool for bringing in new physicians and researchers. JOB CREATION, ROOM TO GROW Baylor Dallas officials estimate that the outpatient cancer center combined with the dedicated cancer hospital, due to open in 2013, will create at least 400 professional-level paying jobs. The new cancer center will significantly increase the number of infusion therapy chairs and private infusion rooms, for example, which means it will need more oncology nurses. There are also plans to significantly grow the number of scientists, medical oncologists and surgical oncologists on the medical staff. Located at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, at the intersection of Worth and Hall streets in Dallas, the new cancer center replaces the original 34-year-old structure, which had run out of space for expansion. The existing building will undergo a transformation and will reopen in 2013 as a part of the new dedicated inpatient cancer hospital that is currently being built. The need and ability to grow the staff and services for oncology patients played a major role in the building of the new cancer center. Statistics show that the number of cancer patients in North Texas is growing. The expected increase is in part because of the number of baby boomers approaching 60 and it s also attributable to the rise in obesity. A person who is morbidly obese has a 100-times greater chance of developing stomach, liver or pancreas cancer, McWhorter said. Smoking also raises the risk for cancer by about 10 times. Last year, one-third of cancer deaths were related to being overweight, obese or inactive, the American Cancer Society reports. The new facility has a decidedly patient-centered focus, and was designed based on feedback from patients, families, physicians and staff. Look for a larger number of support groups and educational resources and the addition of massage, acupuncture, music therapy and art therapy to the full spectrum of care. Patients will also notice that services, such as physical medicine, are consolidated in the new building making them more accessible to those receiving cancer care. A sky bridge connects the cancer center to the parking garage and the future cancer hospital. The center also now offers 239 new underground parking spaces and 829 spaces in the adjacent garage in addition to valet service. Added parking is a big win for landlocked downtown Dallas facilities. The center also offers an expanded patient navigation program, where a nurse navigator guides patients and their families through the treatment process and simplifies access to education, support and resource services so they can focus on healing. Perkins + Will Plans for Baylor Sammons Cancer Center began in 2006, and funding was boosted by a gift of more than $20 million by Sammons Enterprises Inc. and the estate founder Charles A. Sammons. Now that the project is complete, Mc- Whorter believes the impact to the community will be significant for many years to come. It is a very exciting time, but also very humbling because we consider ourselves servants and stewards of patient resources, McWhorter said. We make sure we We make sure we do our best to walk with patients on every step of the journey, John McWhorter, president, Baylor University Medical Center, and executive vice president, Baylor Health Care System do our best to walk with patients on every step of the journey, whether they re just newly diagnosed, whether they re a survivor or whether they choose a different treatment.
