8 AHCC Development First, researchers identified specific mushroom subspecies with superior NK cell activity. Next, they cultured mycelia to ensure each batch was genetically identical to the original. Then, they developed a unique process, (AHCC) is extracted using hot water following an enzyme pretreatment, to significantly reduce the molecular weight. Final product contains polysaccharides with peak molecular weight of just 5,000 Daltons 8

10 The IMMUNE SYSTEM The immune system is a diffuse, complex network of interacting cells, cell products, and cell-forming tissues that protects the body from pathogens and other foreign substances, destroys infected and malignant cells, and removes cellular debris: the system includes the thymus, spleen, lymph nodes and lymph tissue, stem cells, white blood cells, antibodies, and lymphokines.

15 - Yaganimoto et al. Nutr Cancer; 2016 AHCC on Pancreatic Cancer 75 subjects, RCT, Pancreas ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients receiving gemcitabine treatment (GEM). Dose 6g on the AHCC group The C-reactive protein (CRP) elevation and albumin decline of the AHCC group were significantly suppressed as compared to the control group during the GEM administration (P = , P = ). Patients in the AHCC group had less frequency of taste disorder caused by GEM (17% vs. 56%, P = ). Glasgow Prognostic Score (mgps) during chemotherapy was found significantly less in the AHCC group (14%) than the control group (53%, P = ). AHCC intake can be effective in reducing the adverse events associated with chemotherapy and may contribute to maintaining the QOL of patients with PDAC during GEM administration.

16 AHCC and Breast Cancer Forty-one women who were treated with anthracyclines and taxanes at from October 2004 to March 2011 were selected for this study. AHCC has the potential to reduce the severity of neutropenia induced by breast cancer chemotherapy during chemotherapy. Hangai et al. J Altern Complement Med; 2013
