7 Preface Irrespective of the fact that new journals have been founded in recent years which are particularly devoted to research work in Microcirculation it is becoming increasingly difficult to obtain a survey of the relevant literature. Especially critical informations on the present state of the arts are sparse. These considerations created the idea to look for possibilities to present specific items of microcirculatory research in such a way, that both the actual state of the discussion including adverse opinions and an access to the pertinent literature could be provided. Symposia as a random series at which a few experts should critically review their domaine of research appeared as an effective approach to achieve this goal. Their presentations should be discussed with a number of invited scientists working on other specialized fields related to microcirculation. In order to guarantee ample time for this essential part of the symposia, the total number of participants had to be kept rather low. To overcome this disadvantage at least in part, the moderators of the individual sections are requested to summarize the most essential points of the discussion to virtually provide the reader with the actual state of the respective problem. To materialize this concept, the "Bodensee Symposia on Microcirculation" have been founded in cooperation with Dr. E.-D. Wiethoff, M.D. from Deutsche Abbott GmbH, WiesbadenlFRG. We are greatly indepted to this company for supporting and realizing these symposia. For publication of their results a new series named Mikrozirkulation in Forschung und Klinik Progress in Applied Microcirculation was inaugurated. This series will be published in German andlor English,

8 Preface VIII and its contents will not be confined to the Bodensee-Symposia, yet will include, a number of other essential contributions coming from both clinical and experimental microcirculatory research. It is our sincere hope that this new series will not only function as a reliable and relevant source of information for the large scientific community interested in the manifold aspects of microcirculation, but that it will also help to bridge the gap still existing between basic research and the clinical disciplines. We extend our particular thanks to our publisher, Dr. h.c. Th. Karger, for his long lasting and this most recent engagement in microcirculation.
