3 Our vision is a world free from the pain and suffering of cancer. Our purpose is to achieve it. Cancer is something we can t ignore. 1 in 2 men will get cancer in their lifetime. 1 in 3 women will get cancer in their lifetime. 4 5
4 Cancer is a worthy opponent, to say the least. It has a formidable nature, a resourceful manner, and a destructive appetite. But, cancer will never have what we have... HUMANITY Made of COURAGE, DETERMINATION, INNOVATION, PASSION, EMPATHY, AND CARING. 6 7
5 WE ARE THE INNOVATIVE Our funding of innovative research has contributed to the sharp decline in cancer deaths. We re investing more than $450 million in over 50 types of cancer research. The American Cancer Society is honored to have supported 47 investigators who have won the Nobel Prize, considered the highest accolade any scientist can receive. This is a tribute to the Society s program and the strength of its peer-review process. These are the values of humanity that are giving us the advantage over cancer. Hope Lodge helps patients access the care they need. We provide a wealth of services that care for cancer patients and their families, but perhaps none as unique as our Hope Lodge facilities. Our 32 American Cancer Society Hope Lodge locations provide a free home-away-fromhome for patients. It s more than just a roof over your head, it s a nurturing community where patients and caregivers share stories and offer each other emotional support. Our Hope Lodge facilities have saved 550,000 patients more than $466 million in lodging costs. OUR 24/7 LIFELINE IS ALWAYS OPEN. Our national Cancer Information Center connects people with cancer information WE ARE THE CARING 800,000 INQUIRIES A YEAR 8 Our volunteers provide free rides Without our Road To Recovery program, some people would have no way to get to their treatments. Since 2005, specially trained volunteers have provided 6.3 million free rides for cancer patients to and from treatment-related medical appointments. 9
6 YOUR SPONSORSHIP HELPS SAVE LIVES Through your SPONSORSHIP you are serving as a leader in the fight against breast cancer. The American Cancer Society is doing the most in every community to help people with breast cancer today and striving to find cures to end the disease tomorrow. Here s how the Society puts your dollars to work: WE INVEST IN GROUND BREAKING BREAST CANCER RESEARCH TO BETTER UNDERSTAND, PREVENT, FIND, AND TREAT THE DISEASE. The American Cancer Society has played a role in nearly every major breast cancer research breakthrough in recent history, including establishing mammography as the standard for breast cancer screening, discovering treatments such as Herceptin and Tamoxifen, and discovering genes that cause breast cancer. WE PROVIDE FREE, COMPREHENSIVE INFORMATION AND SUPPORT TO CANCER PATIENTS, SURVIVORS, AND CAREGIVERS, WHEN AND WHERE THEY NEED IT. Our cancer information specialists are available around the clock to provide answers at and cancer.org. We are in communities nationwide providing free transportation to treatment, lodging, wigs, one-on-one guidance, help with self-esteem and emotional support. WE HELP PEOPLE TAKE STEPS TO REDUCE THEIR RISK OF BREAST CANCER OR FIND IT EARLY, WHEN IT IS MOST TREATABLE. Genetics, body weight, lack of exercise and alcohol use can increase breast cancer risk by 34 percent. We help raise awareness in communities across the country by establishing screening and preventative guidelines. THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER WALK FACTS AND FIGURES AT A GLANCE NEARLY RAISES SINCE 1993, 300 EVENTS MORE THAN MORE THAN ACROSS $60 MILLION 12 MILLION THE U.S. EACH YEAR WALKERS HAVE RAISED MORE THAN $750 MILLION is a powerful event to raise awareness and funds to end breast cancer. Thanks to improvements in treatment and early detection, more and more women are surviving the disease. While progress has clearly been made, breast cancer is still the most commonly diagnosed cancer among women in the US, and the second leading cause of cancer death in women. The Society s research program has played a role in many of the advances that save lives from breast cancer today, and is relentlessly pursuing the answers that will save even more lives in the future.
