5 MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER OF ORLANDO Here are a few examples of how we re putting dollars to work in Florida: HELPING PEOPLE TAKE STEPS TO STAY HEALTHY Secured $400,000 in corporate donations to fund 8 community health centers to provide over 3,000 mammograms to low-income, un/underinsured women in Florida Advocacy efforts helped secure $2.1 million in funding for the Mary Brogan Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program which provides screenings to over 10,000 low-income, un/underinsured women Engaging 33 corporate CEOs to make health and wellness a priority in the workplace. Florida s CEO s Against Cancer chapter is the 15th in the nation Chair: Pat Geraghty, Chairman of the Board and CEO, GuideWell Mutual Holding Corporation, Florida Blue and GuideWell Group, Inc Chair: Brad Prechtl, Chief Executive Officer of Florida Cancer Specialists Working with over 90 Florida corporations on partnerships to increase awareness for our cause HELPING PEOPLE FACING CANCER TODAY Answering more than 75,500 requests for cancer information via phone, , and online chats Providing patients with more than 40,000 rides to and from cancer-related appointments Providing more than 11,300 nights of free lodging to those traveling away from home for treatment Providing more than 32,800 patients with information or patient programs Providing more than 7,150 breast cancer patients with information or patient programs. Helping more than 1,300 people learn how to manage the appearance-related side effects of treatment HELPING FIND CANCER S CAUSES AND CURES IN FLORIDA AND NATIONWIDE Research throughout the country benefits everyone in Florida. We are currently funding more than $83 million in breast cancer research grants. For example, we are funding research to help patients with triple negative breast cancers. These tumors are clinically very aggressive and carry a high risk of recurrence, usually within 5 years after diagnosis. Therefore, there is an urgent need to identify new treatment options for these patients, to improve their survival. The funded research is designed to bring several benefits to patients with triple negative breast cancers, including: a) a better understanding of the biology of their cancer, b) the identification of a new molecular target which can provide new and effective options of treatment, c) a potential for improving their clinical outcome, d) reduction of the mortality rate due to breast cancer. RALLYING COMMUNITIES TO FIGHT BACK Bringing together more than 260,000 participants and volunteers at Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walks in Florida. After the legislature zeroed out funding for the Mary Brogan Breast and Cervical Cancer Early Detection Program, through our grassroots efforts we were able to restore the current year funding of $1.8 million, and also received an increase in funding for the program. The increase, funding for the Mary Brogan program brought it to an all-time high of $2.1 million.
