1 To: All Year 12 ATAR students Refer: Sally Topley Personal planning and goal setting sessions 2013 All sessions = 20 minutes Location - Library All Year 12 ATAR students at Duncraig Senior High School will have two personal planning sessions with Sally in which they can focus on their goals and aspirations for tertiary entry in The first of these planning sessions will commence in week 6 (11 th March) of this term and will run for just over 2 weeks. Each session will run for 20 minutes. Please read the instructions below: Please make sure that: You have thought about your goals and aspirations for tertiary entry next year. You will have already completed a personal reflection sheet from day of this term so please make sure that you have devoted some time to thinking this through. Be realistic about your goals but do not sell yourself short! Aim high! The student roster is attached. Please find your name and make sure that you understand which time you are expected. Show your teacher the roster before you leave the class. It is important that you keep the time allocated but if it is just not possible (i.e. a class assessment) then you must arrange a swap with another student. You must then also inform Sally of your change of time. This can be done in the morning before school commences during Sally Administration Time. If you an ATAR (or a 3 ATAR Portfolio) student and your name is missing from this list then please see Mr. Goyder immediately. Make sure that you at the library 5 minutes before your allocated time. A copy of Sally s biography can be found on the next page. There may be some minor changes to the roster so please see the Senior School Web Notice Board for the latest version. See School Based Programs. All the best for a very successful goal setting session with Sally. Sally will have a data sheet for you which contains a record of your performance to this point including a predicted ATAR score from your results last year. This is an opportunity to set your goals high and establish study habits to help you get there. This is something that all professional students should aim to do. All the best for a very successful session and a great year. Sally will follow up with a second session after your semester 1 assessment period. Regards Owen Goyder Associate Principal Senior School
2 Duncraig Senior High School Year 12 Goal Setting Sessions with Sally Topley Biography and introduction to Sally Topley Sally has been involved in education all her working life, and has taught all age ranges and abilities, from kindergarten to adult, from gifted and talented through to students at risk of failing, and to those in maximum security prison. Her passion has always been to give her students the skills and knowledge they need to make the best of their time in class, and to enjoy the process as much as they can. Her time as Head of Year 12 at Methodist Ladies College helped her refine the Academic Mentoring role that she now takes to several schools in Perth, including Duncraig Senior High School (Sally was first involved at Duncraig in 2012). What is unusual about Sally s approach is that she mentors students individually. This personal tutorial system is one that Sally developed from her time as an undergraduate at the University of Cambridge, where all teaching, other than lectures, was done individually. This individual attention, combined with her willingness to listen, ensures that she is able to see each student as a whole person in the context of their time in Year 12. She spent time back at her old college in Cambridge in 2010 as an Honorary Fellow and was able to share expertise with others in the field. Both Steve Spice and Owen Goyder have worked with Sally and believe she has much to offer our students. A success story One of her students was told by his school at the end of Year 10 that he should change all his subject selections for Year 11 as his teachers felt he wasn t capable of doing any TEE subjects. He really wanted to go to uni, so the school agreed to let him start the subjects in Year 11, but would ask him to drop them if he was struggling after the first six weeks. He was determined to succeed, so took on board everything that Sally showed him, and took charge of his own learning, recordkeeping and progression. Two years later he left school with an ATAR of 97.5 and the offer of a $20,000 scholarship to Curtin. He was no cleverer or more intelligent than he was in Year 10, but he had learnt to play by the rules of the game. The student was her son. You have the chance to be your own success story. Make it happen! Owen Goyder Associate Principal (Senior School)
