2 Health Note from Paula July is Heat Illness Awareness Month Adults aged 65 years or older and those with chronic medical conditions are less likely to sense and respond to changes in temperature. It is important to remember the following during the peak summer months: Stay in air-conditioned buildings as much as possible. Drink more water than usual and don t wait until you re thirsty to drink. Remember there are water coolers for you on both hallways! Message from Mitch Hello Everyone! Well, can you believe the year is half over? We will be singing Christmas carols before long. Let s enjoy the summer while it s here. We have a lot of things planned for the month so watch those calendars. I hope you enjoy the fireworks across the street at the Elks Lodge on July 4th; they put on a good show. Please join us on July 19th for our Health Fair & Open House! Also, please welcome our new residents Evelyn and Mose Stringfellow, Harold Sprague and Charles Willis. Let s all remember to pray for our country and what our founding fathers believed in and what makes this great country. Be good and I will see you in the halls! ~Mitch Wear loose, lightweight, light-colored clothing. Take cool showers or baths to cool down. Seek medical care immediately if you have, or someone you know has, symptoms of a heat-related illness like muscle cramps, headaches, nausea or vomiting. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include: heavy sweating, weakness, cold, pale and clammy skin, a fast but weak pulse, nausea or vomiting and fainting. If you experience heat exhaustion you should: Move to a cooler location, lie down and loosen your clothing, apply cool, wet cloths to as much of your body as possible, sip water, if you have vomited and it continues, seek medical attention immediately. 2
3 Resident Spotlight: Lucille Conjie Williams Lucille Conjie Conjugation was born January 1, 1930 on the Hawaiian island of Oahu to Mr. James Anthony and Mrs. Lucille Leinani Conjugation. Conjie was named Lucille Leinani after her mother and the third child for Mr. and Mrs. Conjugation. Conjie grew up with two brothers, James, Anthony, and one sister Laurietta Joye. Some of her favorite childhood memories are when she and her siblings played marbles together. She also loved hula dancing. On December 7, 1941 Conjie and her siblings were playing in their backyard when hundreds of planes began flying overhead. She says that you could see the pilots from the ground; they were so close. As bombs were being dropped she says it was very scary and as a child it was hard to understand exactly what was happening around them. During this time there was a complete blackout for weeks in Hawaii and they had to ration everything from gas to water to groceries. She states that everyone was required to wear gasmasks and be administered shots to help prevent disease and infections. Her father, James, was an engineer and the Army attempted to recruit him to become a colonel but her mother said he could not go and that his duty was to his family and their plantation. Conjie s mother taught her and her siblings to sew their own clothes and to cook. Conjie was responsible for taking the ration cards to buy groceries for the family. Conjie completed high school in Hawaii and then boarded a ship for main land America. She sailed for 4 1/2 weeks and docked in San Francisco. From San Francisco she took a bus to Pittsburg, Kansas. She began college at Kansas University in She said her first winter was the hardest because not only was she so far from home but it was so cold! She met her husband, Jim Williams, while attending college and they were married in Jim trained to be a chef at the Cordon Bleu Culinary School in Paris, France. Some of their favorite times together were golfing and raising their family. Conjie and Jim have two children, Tony and Marlea Luana and one granddaughter, Marlea Shay. Conjie moved to Culpepper in 2013 and loves to participate in fitness classes and socialize with residents and staff. 3
