1 z Dear residents, families and friends, Heritage Lake Country Heritage Newsletter February Village Square Drive, Hartland, WI heritagesenior.com Letter from the Director Did you know that there are several small ways that you can make a big impact on life here in our community? First of all, you can share your ideas with us at our regular family councils! These meetings focus on life enrichment, culinary and care topics and are a great way to give your thoughts, feedback and suggestions. Kim Bibb Executive Director Secondly, you can share your talents and time with our residents by volunteering, or by asking a family member or friend to volunteer. From calling bingo or reading to our residents to leading baking club or sharing your musical talents, there are so many ways you can help out in the community. Even giving just a few hours a week can make a real difference in residents lives! If you would like to join our wonderful group of volunteers, contact me or our life enrichment staff to find out more. And thank you for helping make our community great! Sincerely, Kim Bibb Resident Recognition: Sharon Ryczek Sharon moved here in December and has since made lots of new friends and memories! She grew up in Crivitz, where she raised three sons, and she s now been blessed with 10 grandchildren! Sharon went to Mount Marry and Carrol College, where she was Sigma Kapa. She worked as an accountant and in human resources. Her hobbies include playing cards, crocheting and traveling. So far, her favorite parts about Heritage are that all the people here are so nice, the food is good and the activities are great! The Heritage Senior Living Mission: To provide the highest standard while protecting, cherishing, and dignifying the knowledge, value, and joy of our respected residents.

2 w A Message from the Wellness Nurse Show Your Heart Some Love During American Heart Month February is American Heart Month, so it s a great time to make sure your heart is in tiptop shape. According to the CDC, half of all Americans have at least one of the top three risk factors for heart disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol and a history of smoking. Obesity, diabetes, physical inactivity and unhealthy eating patterns (especially consuming too much salt) also increase the risk of heart disease. But there are many things you can do to keep your heart in fighting form. It s important to work with your health care team to identify and address conditions such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol, both through medications and lifestyle changes. A healthy diet is key: Aim for well-balanced meals that are low in salt, saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fresh fruits and vegetables. If you smoke, quit as soon as possible. (The website smokefree.gov has some excellent resources to help Erica Crigler Director of Nursing you quit.) And keep active as best you can. Even a brisk 10-minute walk three times a day can help you and your heart stay healthy. A Message from Culinary Getting the Most out of Winter Vegetables There are some great and often underutilized root veggies in season right now. Sweet potatoes may be the most common, but parsnips and beets can also make great additions to a meal. These vegetables are high in vitamin K, which is important in bone and heart health, as well as vitamins A and B. Parsnips, which taste like a nuttier version of carrots, are great when sautéed or roasted. They also work well when pureed as part of winter soup. Beets are commonly pickled, but there are so many more options for this versatile veggie. One of the simplest is roasted beets in tin foil. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees, then simply coat the beets in oil, cover with foil and roast for minutes. Let cool, then peel and slice. Demetrius Hoskin Executive Chef While great on their own, these vegetables also work well together. Why not enjoy a warm winter veggie medley on a cold winter night? Our Quality Promise to You Our quality promise starts with commitment. Heritage Senior Living is committed to listening to YOU. Got an idea? A suggestion? We want to hear it. Quality matters so we appreciate your ideas and input. Whether you are an employee, a resident, a family member or a visitor, let us know. us at: quality@heritageal.com
