2 Events during April 28 th April 1911 Having today seen the Birth Certificate of Leslie Frost, admitted November 14 th 1910, I find that the mother made an error in the date of birth, the child not being three years old until January 3 rd The 49 attendances made by this child before the latter date will, therefore, be deducted from the total attendances in the summary at the end of the school year. 22 nd April 1913 School will be closed tomorrow on the occasion of the Stone-laying at the new Children s Hospital by H.R.H. the Duchess of Argyll. The Princess Louise (born Louise Caroline Alberta, also known as Marchioness of Lorne & Duchess of Argyll by marriage. She was a member of the Royal Family, the sixth child and fourth daughter of Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert of Saxe- Coburg and Gotha. Louise fell in love with John, Marquess of Lorne, the heir to the Duke of Argyll and the marriage took place on 21 st March She died on 3 rd December 1939, aged rd April 1922 School closed for the day the premises are being used as a Polling Station for the Board of Guardians Election.

4 26 th April 1923 School closed for the day, in compliance with the desire expressed by His Majesty the King, on the occasion of the wedding of H.R.H. the Duke of York. Born 14 th December 1895, Albert Frederick Arthur George Saxe-Coburg- Gotha. Albert was the great-grandson of Queen Victoria and the second son of King George V. Albert served in the Royal Navy during World War One and was created Duke of York in He married Elizabeth Bowles-Lyon on 26 th April The couple had two daughters, Elizabeth and Margaret. The Duke became King George VI when his elder brother, King Edward VIII abdicated on 10 th December 1930 to marry American divorcee Wallis Simpson. Famous Former Pupil Dennis Amiss Dennis Leslie Amiss (born April 7, 1943 in Harborne, Birmingham, Warwickshire) was an English cricketer and cricket administrator. He played cricket for both Warwickshire County Cricket Club and England. A right-handed batsman, Amiss was a brilliant stroke maker particularly through extra cover and midwicket - his two favourite areas to score runs.

5 He was an accomplished batsman in all forms of the game. After retiring as a player in 1987, he served Warwickshire as Chairman of the Cricket Committee, and he followed David Heath as Chief Executive from 1994 until He was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Birmingham in the summer of Another former pupil, Roger Jauncey was at Church Road Council school with Dennis Amiss and transferred to Oldknow Road School with Dennis in Roger remembers that even at the age of 11, Dennis was showing his talents on the cricket pitch as he had been selected to play for a side consisting of boys aged th April 1949 Children of the upper school heard an entertainment given by Mr Percy Stanhope, Ventriloquist, from 3.45 to 4.15 pm. This was repeated on 6 th April for the younger children. A charge of 3d per head was made. 7 th April 1949 Valerie Fowler (Class 1) fell in the playground during afternoon recess and broke the lower point of a front permanent tooth. She appeared to have suffered no other injury and after resting in school she was taken home by one of the staff. 26 th April 1949 School re-opened after the Easter Holiday. Valerie Fowler has suffered no ill effects from her accident. Her mother called school to express thanks for the attention Valerie had received after the mishap. 25 th April 1956 Mr Kirkpatrick spoke to the children on behalf of the Midland Societies for the Blind. A card collection produced th April 1959 During the Easter holiday the floor of one classroom had been taken up for relaying of wooden blocks. This work was begun without the Head Teacher being informed and the work was still in progress on reopening the school. 26 th April 1961 Photographs of all the children were taken by Mr Vincent Cook. 23 rd & 24 th April 1963 Open Afternoons for parents to visit and bid good-bye to the retiring Head Teacher.

6 26th April 1963 Members of the Education Committee and Officials visited the school to give good wishes to the Head Teacher. They observed four classes in the school. 30th April 1963 The Head Teacher retired today after sixteen years and two months service. Signed : Elisabeth R U Jones. 28th April 1982 Presentation at the Fire Service Headquarters to Sarah Albrow who was awarded 2nd prize in a painting competition. She received a framed certificate and a book token for st April 1988 A fashion show/clothes party was held in the Hall for parents. 19th April 2005 After much waiting, school is pleased to announce the re-location of the Reception/School office. As this is situated in the middle of the school it should now make it much more convenient for everybody to use.

7 14 th April 2008 A daily exercise routine for all children called Wake and Shake Up was introduced today. All children are invited to come into school 5 minutes earlier for this exercise. 23 rd /24 th April 2008 School closed due to Industrial Action by the GMB and NUT unions. This Month in History: 14th April The sinking of the RMS Titanic on the night of Sunday 14 April 1912, and into the early hours of the following day, saw the loss of the ocean liner Titanic, one of the worst peacetime maritime disasters in history. At the time of the disaster, Titanic was approximately twothirds of the way through her Atlantic crossing bound for New York, having left Queenstown, Ireland, on 11 April. 1 st April 1957 : BBC fools the nation The BBC has received a mixed reaction to a spoof documentary broadcast about spaghetti crops in Switzerland. The hoax Panorama programme, narrated by distinguished broadcaster Richard Dimbleby, featured a family from Ticino in Switzerland carrying out their annual spaghetti harvest. It showed women carefully plucking strands of spaghetti from a tree and laying them in the sun to dry. But some viewers failed to see the funny side of the broadcast and criticised the BBC for airing the item on what is supposed to be a serious factual programme. Others, however, were so intrigued they wanted to find out where they could purchase their very own spaghetti bush. 2 nd April 1977 : Hat trick for Red Rum Red Rum has galloped into racing history by winning the Grand National for a record third time. The steeple chaser won the race in 1973 and 1974 and came home second in the following two years.

8 2 nd April 1982 : Argentina invades Falklands Argentina has invaded the British territory of the Falkland Islands in the south Atlantic. The islands, off the coast of Argentina, have been a cause of friction between the two countries since Britain claimed them in The Argentine flag is now flying over Government House in the Falkland Islands' capital, Port Stanley. 28 th April 1986 : Soviets admit nuclear accident The Soviet Union has acknowledged there has been an accident at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine. The report, from the official news agency, Tass, said there had been casualties but gave no details of numbers. It said aid was being sent to the injured. The report was the first confirmation of a major nuclear catastrophe since monitoring stations in Sweden, Finland and Norway began reporting sudden high discharges of radioactivity in the atmosphere two days ago. The funeral of Pope John Paul II was held on April 8, 2005, six days after his death on April 2 nd. The wedding of Charles, Prince of Wales and Camilla Parker Bowles took place in a civil ceremony at Guildhall, Windsor on 9 April 2005.
