What can you do to help Bridport Deaf Club? We need new committee members and volunteers! Nominations and voting for the Committee: Chairman = responsible for the overall management of the Club and meetings. Vice Chairman = responsible for management and organisation with the Chairman. Secretary = responsible for , newsletter, website and correspondence. Treasurer & Membership = responsible for financial management and members list. Refreshments = responsible for organising food and drinks for the coffee/tea bar. Children s Activities = responsible for Art & Craft activities for the children. General Committee Members = help with all aspects of the Club s activities. * All committee members attend an evening management meeting once a month to arrange Club activities. Volunteers = help us to run the coffee/tea bar, the children s activities and many other jobs around the Club. Volunteers help at Deaf Club when they can and do not attend the management meetings. Regular volunteers get half-price membership to Deaf Club.

2 DCC Adult & Community Services Consultation Meeting for Deaf Adults living in the Bridport area Saturday 7 th September at 3.30pm We are pleased to welcome Nicky Beaton (Strategic Commissioning Manager) and Wendy Allwood (Service User Involvement Co-ordinator) who work for Dorset County Council, Adult and Community Services. The consultation meeting is for Deaf people who live in the Bridport area. Nicky and Wendy would like to hear your views on what s good about current adult social care services in Bridport and what needs to change. BSL interpreter support will be available. Starting in September Dorset County Council will be consulting with local groups and the community to help them shape future social care services and specialist housing and accommodation in Bridport and the surrounding area. The aim of the consultation will be to produce a Community Plan for Bridport which describes how Adult Services may look in the future, and what our priorities are to meet the needs of the community. The consultation will be focus on the following areas:- Specialist Housing and Accommodation Support for young people transitioning to Adult Services Health Promotion and Prevention Day Activities in the Community Families and young people ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ New Frontier Beacon Church ~ meeting in Bridport on Sunday mornings, 10.30am at St Mary s School, Bridport ~ All welcome and inclusive worship ~ Lesley Rogers is available for communication support at church services local to the Bridport area. Are you able to help with a wellbeing research project? Buckinghamshire New University is looking for individuals who are Deaf or partially Deaf, who would be willing to take part in a research project. Melanie Parris, and Dr Ray Batchelor are exploring Deaf and hearing impaired peoples' experiences of dancing. This research could fit with and support the Wellbeing Strategy (2010), particularly with regards to encouraging people to be more active, promoting inclusion and mental wellbeing. If you know anyone who might be interested in participating, or just want to find out more, contact melanie.parris@bucks.ac.uk. EXETER CENTRAL LIBRARY Deaf & Hearing BSL Club ~ all welcome! Sessions will be held the last Thursday of each month from 7pm till 9pm. The group is an informal gathering and is open to deaf and hearing users of BSL. It s a free evening out the opportunity to meet friends, share deaf news and views and get access to information available in the library. Free tea and biscuits are provided. 4 Care Bill Lobby Plus Join deafblind people, their families, friends and supporters to influence the future of adult social care in England. They are developing a new Care Bill, regulations and guidance. Now is the time to influence them. Government is listening. They have taken on board what deafblind people and families have said about the importance of specialist assessments. Make sure your views are heard. Tell your MP and government officials What exactly should be said about specialist assessments Communication must be given higher priority People must be able to get support, even if they only need a little Other things that matter to you about social care. 7 Our Health in Your Hands Research by Action on Hearing Loss has found some shocking results 68% of respondents have asked for a sign language interpreter to be booked for a GP appointment but did not get one. The equivalent figure for hospital appointments is 66%. 84% of respondents have felt frustrated after a health appointment because no sign language interpreter was provided. 67% of respondents were not sure their GP surgery would be able to book a registered sign language interpreter for them. When asked about hospitals, 61% of respondents were not sure hospital staff would be able to book them a registered sign language interpreter. 74% of respondents have had to remind GP staff about their communication needs, while 80% of respondent have had to remind hospital staff.
