Chair Greg Main, CFM THE INSIDER - September 2010 Greg Main was raised in rural eastern Indiana in the small town of Farmland. For the past 24 years he has worked for the State of Indiana, and is the State Floodplain Manager in the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Greg is currently serving his second term as Chair, after previously serving as Vice-Chair and Treasurer. Greg says he enjoys his time serving on the ASFPM Board because it has given him many opportunities to learn and provide input on a variety of issues. It has also allowed him to see different parts of the country and establish many good friendships over the years. During his time as Chair, Greg hopes to help the Association continue to promote sound floodplain management practices throughout the nation. In his free time Greg enjoys spending time outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. He also loves to cook and spend time with his family.

I hate to hear this news of the passing of a good friend. Prayers for Mel and his family. Greg was my best friend at ASFPM. A teammate and pal in many adventures and misadventures. I will miss Greg greatly and will think of him often. We will meet again someday. Al Goodman

My good friend and fellow flood geek Greg Main passed away today of pancreatic cancer. I will never forget his zest for life, even when life was kicking him in the ass. I also always admired his quiet leadership. I helped talk him into the ASFPM board and then he dragged me into a leadership position behind him. I'll miss him. Greg had many ASFPM best friends. I'm proud to be one of them. I admire his grace under pressure including his positive outlook in his final months. In the end, it seems that Greg was too good for this world. Rest in peace, my friend! Bill Nechamen

Heart broken in many pieces today for many reasons, but especially on the news that Greg Main passed away today. I enjoyed being part of the ASFPM awards ceremony in June where Greg was recognized for his 29 years of service to the ASFPM and floodplain community. I think this photo (above) from Al is my favorite. Godspeed Greg, and prayers for peace for the Main family. Allison Hardin

Learned that Greg Main succumbed to Pancreatic Cancer this morning. He lived life to the fullest to the end. This picture (above) was taken in June and shows how he always was; he was either laughing or had a wry smile. Rest in peace my friend. Bill Brown A toast to our departed friend

Greg was a friend, mentor and long time colleague. I recall him saying often "I am just an good old Indiana boy." But he was so much more. It was that disarming and humble approach that made him so effective at what he did in floodplain management. Thank you Greg for your service to ASFPM, your friendship, and the many laughs over the years. I will miss you. Chad Berginnis

So many memories of the good times and laughs...but I know what a hard battle you had Greg Main. While the rest of us go on without you, I will take solace in knowing you lived each day, for the joy of life, and in sharing those memories. God Speed my friend, may the fishing be plentiful and the Coors Light crystal cold. Alisa Sauvageot

Greg was one of the most unassuming leaders I ever had the pleasure to work with. Floodplains are shaped by seemingly invisible forces, often times it is the same with floodplain policy and Greg was one of those forces. Doug Plasencia

A legacy of great ASFPM leadership..a.k.a. current and future members of the Arts & Leisure Committee

Greg was such an unassuming, selfless guy that to this date many don't know he was the main reason and the force behind formation of the Indiana Floodplain and Stormwater Association. Greg has been one of the greatest advocates for, and contributors to, sound floodplain management in Indiana and he will be greatly missed by Indiana floodplain management community. He was a great, easy going, and understanding friend to many of us. I consider myself lucky to have had him as my friend. He touched my life and enriched it with his calm, warmth, and grace! Rest in piece my friend; I will miss you! Siavash Beik

Region V SuperHeroes!! Tough Crowd

Greg was a great guy, a friend, and will be sorely missed. Sally McConkey

According to Greg, every great decision, during the respective tenures of these past ASFPM Chairs, was made over a hearty game of.. Rock Paper Scissors!!

Greg and I cut our teeth on floodplain management over the years. He was a great friend and will be missed more than words can say. Cindy Crecelius

Greg not only brought that practical on-the-ground experience to being ASFPM Chair, but also brought a sense of practicality to getting things done. Greg was a truly nice guy; not a mean bone in his body or thought in his mind. He taught those values to family, friends and co-workers. He was very unassuming and would never promote himself. But when duty called, he always answered. He served with honor and dignity. Greg was also a key contributor to the CRS Task Force, until his illness forced him to retire. Greg will be remembered fondly for his contributions to the profession, but even more for his humanity and friendship. May he rest in peace. Larry Larson

Until we meet again Together, as a family, we can all keep Greg Main s memory alive by living with intention, passion, purpose, and integrity through our professional and personal lives.. and, in the same fashion as he lived his life, continue to work to leave this world a little bit better off than how we found it!
