Her main appointment is in the Behavioral Neuroscience Program within the Department of Psychology, with joint appointments in the Department of Pharmacology and the Neurobiology Curriculum. Dr. Dykstra received her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1972 under the direction of James B Appel. After receiving her degree, Linda moved to UNC, where she has led an active research program for over 40 years. Her research focuses on the behavioral pharmacology of opioid analgesics, both in relation to their pain-relieving properties as well as their tendency to produce tolerance and dependence. She has received continuous support for her research from the National Institute on Drug Abuse since 1977 and has been recognized with a Research Career Development Award, a Research Scientist Award and a MERIT award for her research contributions. She also served as a member of the Advisory Board for the NIDA. Throughout her research career, Linda has revealed a strong commitment to training young researchers, both at individual as well as organizational levels. She was Dean of the Graduate School at UNC/Chapel Hill for many years and she currently directs one of the longest standing NIDA training grants for predoctoral students. In addition, she directs an Institutional Career Development Award for postdoctoral fellows in partnership between UNC/Chapel Hill and four other universities in NC. Linda attended her first CPDD meeting in Since then she has served on the Board of Directors and as President in 1997/1998. In 2005, she received the CPDD Mentorship Award and, in 2006, the Marian W. Fischman Award. Redonna Chandler, Ph.D. Chief of the Services Research Branch at NIDA National Institute on Drug Abuse Bethesda, MD Redonna K. Chandler, is currently the Chief of the Services Research Branch at the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health, where she provides scientific leadership on research to improve the quality of drug abuse treatment with a special emphasis on the implementation of evidence-based interventions and data harmonization. Dr. Chandler also served as the Deputy Chief of the Services Research Branch and as health scientist administrator, in which capacity she developed research initiatives addressing addiction within criminal and juvenile justice settings. Prior to joining NIDA, she worked for the Bureau of Prisons implementing and evaluating substance abuse treatment programs for federally sentenced offenders and served as an adjunct professor at the University of Kentucky. Dr. Chandler earned her Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Kentucky and has authored numerous peer-reviewed articles and book chapters on a range of topics including measuring drug treatment process and outcomes, treating offenders with substance abuse disorders, addressing co-occurring substance abuse and mental health disorders, and responding to substance abuse problems of adolescent girls. Dr. Chandler has been recognized with several awards for her scholarship and leadership in research.
6 JOSEPH COCHIN YOUNG INVESTIGATOR AWARD MENTORSHIP AWARD William W. Stoops, Ph.D. Assistant Professor Department of Behavioral Studies University of Kentucky College of Medicine Lexington, KY William Walton Stoops was born and raised in Pittsburgh, PA. He earned his Bachelor s degree in Psychology from Davidson College in Dr. Stoops completed graduate training in the laboratory of Dr. Craig Rush and earned his Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from the University of Kentucky in After completing a Post-Doctoral Fellowship working with Dr. Rush and Dr. Sharon Walsh in the Department of Behavioral Science at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of that department and also holds an appointment in the Department of Psychology. His research examines behavioral and pharmacological factors contributing to drug abuse using sophisticated human laboratory methods like self-administration and drug-discrimination, and he has authored or co-authored more than 75 manuscripts and book chapters. Recent work has centered specifically on evaluating laboratory models of pharmacological and behavioral interventions for stimulant use disorders and determining the neuropharmacological effects of atypical prescription analgesics. Since that time he has worked to improve the scope and effectiveness of drug abuse treatment. With NIDA research support, he developed and evaluated a community network approach to drug abuse treatment, assessed family therapy s efficacy with methadone maintenance patients, tested the efficacy of small-group HIV education with drug users in three treatment modalities, evaluated the impact of case management for substance abusers with HIV/AIDS, investigated the utility of treating methadone maintenance patients in a therapeutic community, examined the use of contingency management strategies aimed at improving medication adherence with HIV-positive drug users, and examined the power of Directly Administered Antiretroviral Therapy (DAART) to improve HIV medication adherence in HIV- positive drug users in methadone maintenance treatment. His publications number over 200. In recent years he has focused increasingly on linking research and practice in the addictions. He is senior editor in a book on this topic, published by APA Press, and he is one of two Principal Investigators leading an effort to conduct clinical trials of addiction treatments in a network of treatment programs in the Western States Node of the NIDA Clinical Trials Network.
