Knee/Wittman Achievement Awards Ceremony and Reception
4 Knee/Wittman Achievement Awards Ceremony and Reception Dr. Leukefeld has dedicated his career to improving the mental health of individuals who are drug and alcohol dependent, and to finding ways of helping them become self-sufficient, contributing members of their communities. As Deputy Director of the Division of Clinical Research at the National Institute of Drug Abuse (part of the National Institutes of Health), Dr. Leukefeld one of the first clinicians to identify the link between drug users and HIV/AIDS was involved in a series of studies, including clinical research on preventing the onset and spread of HIV/AIDS among drug users, their spouses, and their children. CARL G. LEUKEFELD, DSW Knee/Wittman Lifetime Achievement in Health & Transitioning from public service to academia, Dr. Leukefeld is now professor of behavioral science, with joint appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry, Oral Health Sciences, and Social Work at University of Kentucky. He is also director of the Center on Drug and Alcohol Research, which has 125 staff members and an annual budget of approximately $7 million. The Center brings together multidisciplinary professionals with interests in drug and alcohol addiction, and is responsible for encouraging scientists and practitioners to develop and carry out research, educational activities, and clinical programs in collaboration with multiple sources within and outside the University. Dr. Leukefeld is also chair of the Department of Behavioral Science which has a three-fold mission in research, teaching and service within the College of Medicine at University of Kentucky. The Department s faculty carry out research on enhancing the understanding of human behavior related to health and disease, with particular emphasis in the areas of aging, addictions, and cancer. Additionally, they provide instruction to medical students, graduate students, and post-doctoral fellows in medical behavioral science. Throughout his career, Dr. Leukefeld has been very involved with NASW. He served as chair of the NASW Commission on Health and Mental Health; as a member of the Joint Commission on Inter-professional Affairs; and as co-chair of the Committee that established the Knee/Wittman Achievement Awards. He has taken every opportunity to keep his social work colleagues up to date about research findings and developments in the field of drug abuse and addictions. Dr. Leukefeld earned his bachelor of science from Missouri Valley College in Marshall, Missouri. He earned a master of social work from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan, and a doctor of social work from the Catholic University of America, in Washington, D.C. Dr. Leukefeld is nationally and internationally known for his outstanding research and policy development accomplishments throughout his career. His professional life is a remarkable example of dedication to establishing effective policies in research, teaching, and clinical practice in health and mental health.
5 As a social worker, Dr. Levy has devoted three decades of his professional career to creating services and programs embodying his personal belief that people with disabilities are entitled to the same dignity, respect, independence, and opportunities for achievement as all other members of society. Dr. Levy has been a national leader in the field of mental retardation and developmental disabilities (MR/DD). In his role as Chief Executive Officer of the Young Adult Institute/National Institute for People with Disabilities (YAI/NIPD) a network of seven agencies providing a variety of comprehensive services to nearly 20,000 people of all ages with developmental, learning, and physical disabilities, and mental health challenges Dr. Levy created an overall system to provide essential services. This system has elevated the quality of administration and clinical standards in the field of developmental disabilities. He has been a pioneer in the social revolution, which has changed the lives and transformed the destinies of thousands of people with developmental and physical disabilities and mental health challenges by building comprehensive programs that facilitate the transition from institutions to dignified communitybased services. Among those services is YAI s Center for Specialty Therapy, which provides individuals with a variety of mental health and rehabilitative services designed to address their mental health needs and decrease challenging behaviors. Under Dr. Levy s leadership, YAI Home Health Services a Medicaid and Medicare certified home health agency provides services to people with disabilities who are difficult to treat in traditional community facilities. Dr. Levy also led the creation and implementation of early intervention and early childhood programs that provide a range of therapeutic and educational services to infants and toddlers up to five years of age. JOEL M. LEVY, DSW Knee/Wittman Outstanding Achievement in Health & The health care and mental health care programs and services that Dr. Levy oversees through the YAI/NIPD network provide a range of services, fulfilling a variety of needs within a diverse community, as well as a formal support network for people with disabilities, their families, and their communities. They also encourage informal support systems that enhance independence, improve quality of life, and build brighter futures. Dr. Levy earned a bachelor of education and a master of psychology degree from New York University, in New York City. He also earned his master of social work and doctor of social work degrees from Adelphi University, in Garden City, N.Y. Establishing equality for people with developmental and physical disabilities and mental health challenges has been the essence of Dr. Levy s professional career. He has devoted his training to providing access to fundamental, high quality services for this underserved population, including families and communities. The Knee/Wittman award program was established to recognize those who represent the values, ethics, and approaches exemplified by two dedicated social work pioneers, Ruth Knee and Milton Wittman. Knee and Wittman (who is now deceased), guided the development of social policy and standards. Their lifelong commitment to social values and the effective provision of services to people who are disadvantaged are reflected in their careers with the Public Health Service, and in their leadership roles with professional social work, public health, and mental health organizations. The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to a professional social worker who has made exemplary contributions in health and mental health practice. Professional social work practice includes direct or clinical social work; social work education; social work research; and administration related to health or mental health problems, issues, or programs. The Outstanding Achievement Award is presented to an individual or group that has made a significant impact on national mental health public policy, professional standards, or program models.
