1 Juliette Low Teen Organizer As a teenager, Juliette formed her first organization, Helping Hands, and made clothing for the poor even though she was not a good seamstress! Juliette Low is the founder of the Girl Scouts of the United States. Even as a young girl, Daisy, as she was called, was always interested in the arts. She wrote poems; sketched, wrote and acted in plays; and later became a skilled painter and sculptor. Daisy was very athletic. She was Captain of a rowing team and a strong swimmer. She learned to canoe and was also a tennis player Juliette Low was almost completely deaf, yet she never let her disability prevent her from accomplishing her goals. The first Girl Guide meeting in the United States was held on March 12th in 1912 with 18 girls. One hundred years later, Girl Scouts has 3.7 million members!

2 Sacagawea Teen Guide and Interpreter When she as about 16 years old, Sacagawea with her new born son guided 40 men across the country. In 1805, Lewis and Clark hired a French trapper to be their guide across the country. His young wife, Sacagawea, would also come along to be their interpreter. Before leaving on the expedition, Sacagawea gave birth to a son. She carried the baby on her back the whole way from North Dakota to the Pacific coast and back In 2000, Sacagawea was honored by minting her image on the one dollar coin. During the trip, Sacagawea was helpful in many ways. She could find edible plants, recognized landmarks and saved documents and supplies during a canoe accident. Sacagawea s husband was paid $500 and given land for the trip. Despite her courage and knowledge, Sacagawea did not receive any money for her contribution.

3 Ernestine Rose Teen Advocate for Civil Rights At 16, Ernestine Rose went to court and won back her inheritance from her mother, as well as the right to decline an arranged marriage! Even though Ernestine was raised in a wealthy family, she was always concerned with the suffering of others. Her father, a rabbi, had old-fashioned ideas about women. Despite this, by the age of 14, Ernestine began to strongly reject anything that related to female inferiority Ernestine Rose made huge contributions to women s rights and women s equality. Leaving home at 17, Ernestine traveled all around Europe. She supported herself by selling a room deodorizer she created and made herself. When she was 26, Ernestine and her husband moved to New York. She began giving lectures on equality for women, the abolition of slavery and religious tolerance.

4 Sybil Ludington Teen Revolutionary War Heroine! When she was only 16 years old, Sybil rode 40 miles on a dark, rainy night to warn about an attack by British troops. And it was Sybil s father who sent her on this important job. As a commander of the militia, Colonel Ludington knew his daughter could handle such a serious mission. Not only did Sybil warn the townspeople, her ride helped to gather the men needed to fight. Known as the female Paul Revere, Sybil actually road twice as far as he did. Sybil continued to be a messenger throughout the rest of the war. Sybil s hometown was later renamed Ludingtonville in honor of her heroic ride

5 Mary Shelley Teen Novelist who Wrote Frankenstein When she was nineteen, Mary Shelley wrote one of the most famous novels ever published. Mary never received a formal education but was taught to read and write at home. Her parents were both radical thinkers and writers. Her mother, who died when Mary was only 10 days old, was considered one of the first active feminists. Mary Shelley is considered the inventor of science fiction. According to history, after reading ghost stories with her friends, Mary and her husband were challenged to each write their own ghost story. Mary s idea of Frankenstein is said to have come from a "waking dream. Her husband, a famous poet, encouraged her to expand the story into a novel. It was first believed that her husband was the true author of Frankenstein!

6 Maria Mitchell Teen astronomer and advocate for women s rights! When she was 12 years old, Maria helped her father figure out the exact moment of the annular eclipse. At the age of 17, Maria started her own school teaching other girls math and science. Later, she became the first woman allowed to join the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Along with being a talented astronomer, Maria was an advocate for women's rights in the United States. Maria discovered a comet which was named Miss Mitchell s Comet In 1865, Maria became a college professor of astronomy. At the college, Maria found out that ma she made less money then male professors. Unusual for that time, Maria stood up for herself insisting that her salary be increased

7 Maria Tallchief Famous Teen Ballerina When she was fifteen years old, Maria danced her first solo performance at the Hollywood Bowl. Maria began ballet and piano lessons at the age of three and often performed in her local area. By age eight she she was so good that her family moved to California to get better training. Maria s mother wanted her to become a concert pianist, but Maria preferred dance. Born 1925 Maria Tallchief was the first Native American to become a prima ballerina. After high school, Maria joined the Russian Ballet in New York City as a soloist. At that time, Americans (especially Native Americans) were not considered serious ballerinas. Maria proved that you didn t have to be European to be a great dancer.

8 Barbara Johns Teen Civil Rights Activist When she as only 16 years old, Barbara organized a student strike for equal educational opportunities for black school children. Barbara Johns' contribution to civil rights is often overlooked because she was a teenager when she made a difference. When she was in school, black students went to different schools than the white students. The black schools were overcrowded, freezing cold and roofs leaked Barbara s commitment to equality eventually lead to the integration of schools. Conditions in the white schools were much better than in the black schools. Barbara knew this wasn t right. She rallied the students to strike. They walked out of school and marched to the county courthouse to make officials aware of the situation. Because of Barbara and others like her, separating black and white students became illegal.

9 Shannon Tavarez Tween Broadway Actress Shannon was 5 years old when her mother started to realize that Shannon could sing. She enrolled Shannon in the Harlem School of the Arts for vocal and piano. When she was 11, Shannon went on her first audition. She competed against thousands of other talented young girls to win the part of Young Nala, Simba's feisty feline girlfriend, in the Broadway production of Disney s Lion King Shannon was fearless, as a performer and as a young woman. Shannon s dream had come true. She was a Broadway actress! But unfortunately, Shannon had to quit after six months when it was discovered that she had cancer. Shannon's amazing talent and courage continues to inspire girls everywhere.

10 Nancy Lopez Teen Golf Superstar Nancy Lopez won her first amateur golf tournament at age 12. Professional golfer, Nancy Lopez, was named Player of the Year four times during her career. Nancy recieved her first set of golf clubs when she was 8 years old. She fell in love with the game and won the pee wee tournament when she was 9 years old. Nancy s father dug a huge hole in their backyard and filled it with sand so she could practice hitting balls out of the sand trap. Born 1957 Nancy s school did not have a girl s golf team so she played on the boys team and helped them win two state championships. She won the New Mexico Women's Amateur tournament at the age of 12 and went on to win several amateur titles. Nancy became a professional golfer while in college.

11 Samantha Smith Tween Ambassador for Peace Samantha began writing letters to International leaders at the age of 5 with a letter to Queen Elizabeth. When Samantha was 10 years old, she wrote to the new Soviet leader asking why the relationship between the Soviet Union (now called Russia) and the United States was so tense. She received a personal reply and an invitation to visit. Samantha s trip to the Soviet Union became an international sensation Samantha became known as "America's Youngest Ambassador." Samantha even wrote a book about her journey and hosted a children's special for the Disney Channel where she interviewed politicians. Unfortunately Samantha s mission was cut short. She was killed in a plane crash when she was 13 years old.

12 Lynne Cox Teen Long Distance Swimmer! At age 14, Lynne swam across a 27-mile channel with a group of teenagers. They swam for more than 12 hours! Lynne joined her first swim team at age nine. She loved to swim but was always the slowest swimmer on the team. Lynne didn t give up. She discovered that she could swim farther and longer than everyone else. At 15, Lynne swam across the English Channel in 10 hours. Born 1957 Lynne was inducted into the Swimming Hall of Fame in Lynne continued to swim breaking many records, even beating records set by men. Lynne is probably best known for her swim across the Bering Strait and her 25 minute Antarctic swim. The 40º waters of the Antarctica are so cold that it should have killed Lynne. No one knows how she does it!

13 Nadia Comăneci Teen Olympic Gymnast When she was fourteen years old, Nadia became the first person in modern Olympic gymnastics history to be awarded a perfect 10. Nadia began gymnastics in kindergarten. At age 6 she was chosen to attend an experimental gymnastics school. Nadia started competing at the age of 8 years old. Soon she was winning national and international competitions. Born 1961 Nadia is the youngest person to ever become an Olympic gymnastics all-around champion! At the age of 14, Nadia became one of the stars of the 1976 Olympics in Canada. She earned seven perfect scores of 10 and led her team to win a silver medal. Today, Olympic participants must be 16 years old so Nadia will always be the youngest Olympic all-around Champion.
