1 Homestead Elementary December 2, 2016 Happy December Homestead Families! This month we want to share with you some information regarding the conversations we have been having with students during our Bullyproofing sessions in first through fifth grades. We have been focusing on the difference between normal conflict and bullying. A person is being bullied or victimized when he or she is exposed, repeatedly and over time, to negative actions on the part of one or more persons. (Olweus, 1991). The key elements of bullying include: Imbalance of power the imbalance can be physical, psychological or intellectual and hinders the victim from defending him or her self Repeated the negative actions usually occur repetitively over a period of time Intentional bullies purposefully choose actions which will hurt or intimidate the targeted victim Unequal levels of affect victims will usually display high levels of emotional distress while the bully demonstrates little emotion When comparing normal conflict versus bullying we discuss the following: NORMAL CONFLICT VS. BULLYING - equal power or friends - imbalance of power or not friends - happens occasionally - repeated negative actions - accidental - purposeful - not serious - serious with threats - not seeking power, attention - attempt to gain power, attention, or material things or material things - takes responsibility and tries - blames the victim and makes no to solve the problem effort to solve the problem One of the goals that we have for the students is that they will learn how to solve normal conflicts between friends on their own but that we want them to report to a trusted adult when they are the victim of or when they have witnessed bullying. 3 Page 3 Box Tops for Education We all shop for groceries, sometimes two or three times a week - or more. Now turn those shopping trips into easy cash for the Homestead Elementary Student Council, and encourage friends to do the same! Just look for the Box Tops logo on hundreds of products like Cheerios, Hamburger Helper and Kleenex, in almost every aisle of the store. All you need to do is clip and send them to school with your child each one is worth 10 for our school. Student Council uses the money raised from box tops in a variety of ways with our motto being Kids helping kids. Last year we donated to the Children s Hospital. In past years we have donated to many organizations such as the Tennyson Center, Brentʼs Place, the Halo Project, the Morgan Adams Foundation, Special Olympics and the Ronald McDonald House. Each year we purchase the gift certificates for Walkin Wheelin Wednesdays winners, water for field day, and gifts for teachers during teacher appreciation week. We also give money to the school for student and grade level use. Our plans are to do the same this year. The money we raise always goes to good use, so bring in box tops and helps us make a difference. Each classroom has a collection box just waiting for the box tops. Thank you for supporting Homestead s Student Council.

4 Page 4 Testing for lead in the water at Cherry Creek Schools After the Flint, Michigan water crisis, the Cherry Creek School District, like the majority of school districts in Colorado, decided to undergo water testing, conducted by an outside, expert entity, to determine whether there is lead in the water at any schools. We have posted information about how and where the tests have been conducted so far along with a Q & A on our website at You can find results for the schools tested so far and new results are posted as soon as they completed, so please check back if your school has not yet been tested.

5 Page 5 Have you recently moved??? Be sure to update your home address when you move so you will continue to receive the school and District mail. 7 Page 7 Help Protect Yourself & Your Family from the Flu Influenza is a respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses that infect the nose, throat and lungs. It can cause mild to severe illness and can even be fatal. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year. Only injectable flu vaccines (shots) are available for the flu season and are recommended persons 6 months of age and older. Signs and Symptoms of the flu -Fever or feeling feverish/chills (not everyone will have a fever with the flu) -Cough -Sore Throat -Runny or stuffy nose -Muscle or body aches -Headache -Tiredness and fatigue -May have vomiting and diarrhea Flu viruses are thought to be spread by droplets made when a person with the flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of nearby persons. Sometimes, although less often, a person may get the flu by touching a contaminated surface and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. You may be able to pass the flu onto another person before you even know you are sick. Young children and those with a weakened immune system may be able to infect others for an even longer period of time. Prevention The first and most important step in preventing the flu is by getting a flu vaccine every year. Everyday actions such as frequent hand washing, covering coughs and sneezes with a sleeve-not a hand, and staying away from people who are sick, help to slow the spread of germs that cause illnesses like the flu. Children who are ill need to stay home from school until they are fever free (without medication) and can function in the classroom normally.

8 Page 8 Invitation to apply to serve on the CCSD Community Wellness Committee The goals of the Cherry Creek Schools Comprehensive Wellness Strategy are to reduce barriers to learning and develop skills that support lifelong healthy living. Our framework is the Whole School, Whole Community, Whole Child model which emphasizes the importance of community and parent partnership. As such, we are currently seeking parents interested in providing input into the district s comprehensive wellness efforts by serving as a member of the CCSD Community Wellness Committee (CWC). To learn more about committee participation and access a membership application, please use the following link: We value your ideas, feedback and interest in supporting the health and wellness of all the students, staff and families in the Cherry Creek community. Thank you in advance for your contributions and service. Cherry Creek Schools Foundation Maybe you remember the first time you heard about an educator initiated grant? EIGs provide opportunities for teachers and classrooms to take ideas to reality. The impact and innovation through Cherry Creek Schools Foundation funding is made possible by contributions big and small It All Adds Up. This year another 91 EIGs were funded thanks to our donors. Ideas in science, technology, engineering, arts and math have blossomed because of the commitment of schools, teachers and students to put donated funds to good use. This year, in lieu of other gifts (or in addition), donate in honor of a teacher. It is a gift that gives twice: 1. Honor the teacher (you enter the name with the donation, and we the foundation notifies them). 2. The funds enhance classroom experiences and 21st century skills can flourish. Visit click the donate icon on the top of the screen, enter donation details including those you wish to honor. Once your gift is complete, feel the joy of giving with the knowledge that you are done shopping for teacher gifts AND you gave with impact. Happy holidays from Cherry Creek Schools Foundation. If you have questions, please call or jhenden@cherrycreekschools.org.
