Front Office Team Kelly Sommerfeld, Principal Karen Bryant Assistant Principal, Jennifer Ostrom, Office Manager Penny Thomas, Secretary/Registrar Creekside Main Office Attendance Dear Creekside Families, March 2, 2017 It is hard to believe March is already upon as. With so many fantastic events taking place over this past month, it s no wonder the time is flying by! We are so grateful to our PTCO for organizing our Creekside traditions. The Spring Book Fair, Happy Camper, S more Fun with Books, was a huge success as was our Donuts with Dads and Healthy Choices Week. What a joy it was to watch students take pride in trying new healthy foods! In addition, our Gala is just around the corner. We look forward to seeing everyone for an evening of fun in support of our incredible programming here at Creekside. It was wonderful to see so many families at our parent-teacher conferences. This is a time for celebration, reflection, and planning for next steps in your child s learning journey. We are so proud of the gains our students have been making this school year and look forward to continued partnerships with our families. Later this month all third through fifth grade students will take the state s tests called CMAS/PARCC. The schedule is included in this newsletter, plus information about the exemption process. We are confident our students are prepared for a successful testing experience and view this as a chance for them to show off all their great learning! Finally, please join us in congratulating this year s Exceptional Volunteer, Colleen Dooley, our current PTCO president. We are so grateful for all of the hard work Colleen has put into serving our Creekside community and look forward to honoring her at Cherry Creek s Exceptional Volunteer Dinner on Thursday, April 13,, We wish you a joyful beginning of Spring! SET CLOCKS FORWARD ONE HOUR ON MARCH 12 Sincerely, Karen Bryant Karen Bryant Assistant Principal

3 3 Important information about Upcoming State Assessments Dear Creekside Families, In the state of Colorado, assessments are administered to measure students performance of the Colorado Academic Standards. This year all 3rd through 5th grade students will take the state s tests called CMAS/PARCC. CMAS/PARCC Math assesses math concepts, math skills and procedures, mathematical reasoning, and real-world mathematical application. On the CMAS/PARCC English Language Arts, students are asked to read one or more texts, answer comprehension and vocabulary questions, and write an essay that requires them to draw evidence from the text(s). We encourage you and your child to visit to see sample questions and take practice tests. Additionally, our 5 th grade students take CMAS: Science and our 4 th grade students take CMAS: Social Studies. You may find Electronic Practice Assessment Tools (epat) for this assessment by visiting Cherry Creek School District will be administering the Colorado Measures of Academic Success online in the upcoming months. Creekside Elementary s testing schedule for students in 3rd through 5th grade is provided in this newsletter. Please note that the minutes listed are the maximum amount of testing minutes for each unit/ section. If you are aware of an absence or tardy during the testing schedule, please notify Penny Thomas ( ) as soon as possible so we are able to make other arrangements to minimize the amount of classroom time missed. We appreciate your support with ensuring the best possible testing environment for all students. We know that our students will be well prepared because at Creekside we strive each day to create leaders and learners. Sincerely, Kelly Sommerfeld Principal Parent Exemption Information During the 2015 legislative session, lawmakers passed SB which gives parents the right to refuse to have their children take the state standardized tests CMAS, PARCC and the ACT without any negative consequences to the student, teacher or school. The Cherry Creek School District has created a form for parents. You can access the form from your parent account at my.cherrycreekschools.org. If you will be exempting your student from testing, please complete this form at least two weeks prior to testing so that we can develop our assessment schedule. The law only applies to the state mandated tests CMAS and PARCC and the ACT and does not apply to other test given in the classroom as part of the course work. For additional information, please visit our district website at cherrycreekschools.org.

9 9 INFLUENZA vs. COMMON COLD What are the symptoms of the flu versus the symptoms of a cold? The symptoms of flu can include fever or feeling feverish/chills, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches and fatigue (tiredness). Symptoms of the flu can often come on very quickly/suddenly. Cold symptoms are usually milder than the symptoms of flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems. What is the difference between a cold and the flu? The flu and the common cold are both respiratory illnesses but they are caused by different viruses. Because these two types of illnesses have similar symptoms, it can be difficult to tell the difference between them based on symptoms alone. In general, the flu is worse than the common cold, and symptoms are more common and intense. Colds are usually milder than the flu. People with colds are more likely to have a runny or stuffy nose. Colds generally do not result in serious health problems, such as pneumonia, bacterial infections, or hospitalizations. Flu can have very serious associated complications. Take every day preventative actions to stop the spread of germs. -Try to avoid close contact with sick people. -While sick, limit contact with others as much as possible to keep from infecting them. -If you are sick with flu-like illness, CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone except to get medical care or for other necessities. (Your fever should be gone for 24 hours without the use of a fever-reducing medicine.) -Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. -Wash your hands often with soap and water. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand rub( -Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Germs spread this way. -Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs like the flu.
