15 Daily Emergency and Response Situational Information Report 15 March 2014 Updates and Activities of Different Organizations in Tharparkar as of 14 March, 2014 Response by HANDS in Tharparkar as of 15 March, 2014 In response to the emergency HANDS teams started gathering second hand information about the drought situation. Following points were observed; As per DHQ hospital record, a Total of 22 deaths were recorded in the Last one month. Mostly neonatal deaths occurred and the major cause was Sepsis/ Birth asphyxia. Out of 22, 05 deaths of preterm babies probably caused maternal malnutrition. Other cases were: 1 case of NNT, 06 Pneumonia, 02 VSD & 02 Diarrhea Month / Year Data of Children < 5 Years age A dmitted and Deaths at CIVIL HOSPITAL MITHI from January 2014 to February, 2014 Total Admission (Adults/Children) Admission of Children Under 5 years Death of Children Under 5 years JAN FEB MARCH 2014 (till 15 th March) No Data No Data 08 Total (2014) 1, Source: Data taken from EDO Health by focal person Raheem Mari of HANDS org Age/Year Cases Age/Year Cases Under 6 Above Source: Data taken from EDO Health by focal person Raheem Mari of HANDS org Data from THQ Hospital Nagarparkar Date Malnutrition Cases Labor Room Cases LBW Mortality Dec Dec No Data Jan Jan Feb Feb Source: Data taken from THQ Nagarparka by focal person Raheem Mari of HANDS org Rapid Assessment Done By HANDS as Of 15 March 2014 Low rainfall has caused crop failure, which coupled with outbreak of sheep pox epidemic in small livestock, has affected household food security. A huge loss of livestock is being reported in the areas, that is one of the biggest sources of livelihood for the people. Although food is available in the nearest markets but people don t have adequate power of purchase. People are also facing high cost of transportation in most of the areas; therefore they are unable to reach health facilities. Cases of mortility of Peacock are also reported due to rani Khaet disease, which was also reported last year. As per focus group discussions conducted at different villages: Villagers are unable to pay for the transport to buy food or to reach hospital. It costs about 8005,000/ to reach District Headquarter or nearest hospital facility where they could get proper treatment. Livestock being main source of income was used either to get food supplies or was sold in such situations. 15
