Biosecurity is many things: External biosecurity we don t want infections inside Denmark or the farm Internal biosecurity we want to minimize the infection inside the farm Zoonotic biosecurity we don t want infections to come out of the farm

Difficult subject, because: All farms are different Difficult questions: How do you work with this? Why do you do like this? Is that smart, could it be done different/better?

External biosecurity Keep infections out of Denmark PED Swine fever Common for these two: Virus Long survival Low dosage BIG economical consequences for the business

External biosecurity Swine fever and PED, differences African swine fever: Porcine Epidemical Diarrhoe To be reported to the authorities Own responsibility First outbreak kr. No rule from the government Infected farms are emptied Voluntary program

External biosecurity Swine fever

External biosecurity PED

External biosecurity Most important list 1 diseases: Brucellosis Swine fever Classical African Anthrax Foot and Mouth disease Swine Vesicular Disease Most important list 2 diseases: Aujeszkys disease Cysticercosis TGE (Transmissible gastroenteritis) Salmonellosis Tricinosis

You are Denmarks border control

External biosecurity Foreign workers/visitors: As a minimum respect following quarantine rules:

External biosecurity

External biosecurity You are the border protectors of Denmark! You have to check the trucks that enter the farm There are several rules, common for these rules is, that the trucks coming form abroad have to respect a quarantine of at least 12 or 48 hours

External biosecurity

External biosecurity Check truck: Try one of 3 possibilities: SMS to with the trucks licence number App for Android telephone on Playbutik Licence number is like this: CW93063 Check that the truck is clean be specially aware of boots and tools

External biosecurity Swine fever can cross the border in food It is not allowed to take imported food with you into the farm A big investigation in the USA showed, that PED was moved between farms in a lunch box that was used on several farms Hunting and especially hunting trophies are a big risk

External biosecurity at the farm Good quarantine stable ALSO in farms without SPF status! Beware of air inlet Good routines at feeding/taking care of the pigs Troublesome but IMPORTANT! Quarantine stable is an important part of immunity management!

External biosecurity at the farm Farm entry is important Change clothes (also socks) Keep farm clothes and own clothes separate Wash and disinfect hands (Disposable paper towels) Possibility of washing farm clothes and tools inside the farm Trash handling Keep entry CLEAN!

Internal biosecurity The internal biosecurity has to be a natural part of all routines in the farm!

Internal biosecurity Internal biosecurity is many things: Sectioning Weaning (no pigs without a sow in the farrowing stable) Moving of animals Sick pens/stable Dead pigs Hygiene Needles Cleaning Tools Clothes/boots Corridor Cats?

Internal biosecurity Research with GPS on all employees in a big American farm We know that the pigs are moved in a correct flow never young animals past older animals But what about people?

Internal biosecurity Research with GPS on all employees in a big American farm

Internal biosecurity Many wrong routes It is a good idea to look at a plan of the farm Where are the right routes? Where are the wrong routes? Many times Internal biosecurity and lean can combines, so you save time Where is the fridge placed? Minimize questions to the other employees For example employee from farrowing stable enters slaughter pig stable to ask something that could have been agreed in a break

Zoonotic biosecurity The purpose is to avoid spreading of zoonotic diseases from animals by meat or people to the rest of the society Zoonotic diseases are diseases that can infect both people and animals (pigs): MRSA Flu Salmonellosis/Campylobacter

Zoonotic biosecurity KO 2.22 Introduction and spread of infectious diseases (zoonosis) Washing hands Cleaning and disinfection of boots and tools Persons with zoonotic diseases may not have contact to the animals in the farm Inform about the health status of the farm Health status of the supplier of breeding animals

Zoonotic biosecurity Separation of animals with different health status Transport to and from the farm Trash handling Diseases that have to be reported Sick animals have to be isolated from the other animals on the farm Pest control

Zoonotic biosecurity
