Started in April 2011, the Canadian-government funded CERC program aims to make UPEI and Canada the global leader in applied aquatic epidemiology research with an ecosystem health focus. Prior to moving to Canada, Dr. Gardner was a Professor of Epidemiology at the University of California, Davis for 23 years. His current research interests include diagnostic test evaluation and implications of pathogen exchange between farmed and wild aquatic animals. Dr. Gardner obtained his veterinary degree at the University of Sydney in 1975 and completed post-graduate training (Master of Preventive Veterinary Medicine and PhD) at the University of California, Davis in Kyle Garver Aquatic Animal Health, Fisheries & Oceans Canada, Nanaimo, BC Kyle Garver is a Research Scientist with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, at the Pacific Biological Station in Nanaimo, BC where he heads the Virology Laboratory within the Aquatic Animal Health Section. Designated as the Canadian Reference Laboratory for viral hemorrhagic septicemia virus (VHSV) and infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV), the PBS Virology laboratory conducts extensive diagnostic testing and investigates the epidemiology and disease ecology of these pathogens. Maureen Purcell Western Fisheries Research Center, U.S. Geological Survey, Seattle, WA Maureen is currently employed as a Research Microbiologist at the Western Fisheries Research Center US Geological Survey in Seattle, WA. Maureen received her B.S. in Zoology from Washington State University in 1993, her M.S. in Zoology from the University of Maine in 1997 and Ph.D. in Aquatic and Fishery Sciences from the University of Washington in Her current research focuses on a range of pathogens that infect salmonid and clupleid fishes, including Renibacterium salmoninarum, Icthyophonus sp., infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus and piscine orthoreovirus. In addition to research, she actively engages in training and technical outreach activities. Moderator : Ji m Powell (BC CAHS)

4 Nellie Gagné Centre for Aquatic Animal Health Research and Diagnostics (CAAHRD), Moncton, NB Nellie Gagné, scientist and head of the Moncton Molecular Biology group, has worked for the past thirteen years for DFO and established a molecular biology facility at DFO s Gulf Fisheries Center (GFC). The expertise of her group is in the development and validation of molecular diagnostics of fish diseases, and research focusing on fish health and disease control in general. A strong emphasis on quality is a trademark of the laboratory and insures that all steps of the projects will be managed in a rigorous manner. The GFC laboratory is the reference center for some pathogens, e.g. Infectious salmon anemia virus. Kim Klotins Domestic Disease Control Section, Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), Ottawa, ON Dr. Kim Klotins graduated from the Ontario Veterinary College in During her years of practice, Kim had the opportunity to work with the aquaculture and enhancement industries on the west coast, primarily with oysters, Pacific salmon and rainbow trout. Kim received her DVSc in Epidemiology from the Ontario Veterinary College in 2003 and worked with both the federal and Ontario government on issues such as salmonellosis, antimicrobial resistance and judicious use of antimicrobials. Kim started working for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency in 2006 on the National Aquatic Animal Health Program (NAAHP) as a risk assessor. Currently, she is National Veterinary Program Specialist for Domestic Control Programs for the NAAHP, responsible for programs involving receipt and response to notifications of regulated diseases and the domestic movement control program, which includes issuance of permits and compartmentalization. As part of those programs, the CFIA is working to establish a network laboratory system for the NAAHP. F ISH P ATH O GE N QPCR SCREENING & ISO/IEC A C C RED ITAT ION WO R KS H OP

Michael has been personally involved in leading and participating in projects for the designing, developing and implementing of management systems towards satisfying the ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO / IEC 17025, OHSAS 18001, ISO Standards. Tomy Joseph Virology and Molecular Diagnostics, Animal Health Centre, Ministry of Agriculture, Abbotsford, BC Tomy Joseph joined the BC Ministry of Agriculture on August 1, 2013 as a Veterinary Virologist at the Animal Health Centre. For the past 6 years, Tomy was the Veterinary Virologist at the Veterinary Diagnostic Services of Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives (MAFRI) in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tomy graduated from the College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Kerala Agricultural University, India in1993. After spending 5 years in public veterinary practice, Tomy immigrated to Canada in 1998 to pursue graduate studies in veterinary and molecular virology. Tomy obtained an M.Sc. in 2001 and a Ph.D in 2004 for his thesis research on bovine herpesvirus-1 (BHV-1) and infectious salmon anemia virus (ISAV) respectively from the Atlantic Veterinary College, University of Prince Edward Island, PE, Canada. His thesis research contributed to the development of diagnostic techniques for BHV-1 and ISAV and understanding of ISAV pathogenesis. During his postdoctoral research from 2004 to 2007 at the Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases, National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Mary- F ISH P ATH O GE N QPCR SCREENING & ISO/IEC A C C RED ITAT ION WO R KS H OP

6 land, USA, Tomy developed live attenuated vaccines against avian influenza A H7 subtype viruses for human use and conducted preclinical evaluation in animal models. His research also focused on the development of diagnostic techniques for avian influenza viruses and the pathogenesis and immune response of avian influenza viruses in animal models. Tomy s areas of professional interest include development of diagnostic virology techniques, monitoring emergence of zoonotic viruses and foreign animal disease viruses and research in viral pathogenesis. Currently, Tomy collaborates with researchers from the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for the development of microarray based diagnostic tests and characterization of novel strains of avian and swine influenza viruses.
