1 Parents - we need your help. With the heavy rains and cooler weather, I'm sure you have noticed longer drive times in your own commutes to work. Schools are no exceptions. Please plan accordingly. Approximately 60 students have arrived after 7:45 both today and yesterday due to the long carpool lines. Here are a few reminders: 1. Students may be dropped off as early as 7:00. Even in heavy rain, carpool does not back up until around 7: With heavy rains expect slower lines. Cars often do not pull up all the way and take longer as their child gets out of the vehicle. 3. With heavy rains, expect at least extra cars in the carpool line. There have been no walkers, nor bike riders with the rains. 4. Volunteers and safety patrol will not always be available to assist. Please encourage your child to exit the car once you come to a stop. Finally, we would just ask that all families remember two things in bad weather carpool situations - time and safety. Please allow extra time by leaving earlier and please drive safe. We have witnessed multiple cars driving faster than posted speeds when late and even driving on curbs at times. Everyone's safety is our primary concern. We appreciate your patience and partnership as we work to safely and efficiently maximize our time instructing your children. Thank you.

Wednesday: Wear as much red as you can (no hair color added). I will run away from drugs! Wear tennis shoes and exercise gear. Thursday: Friday: Lei off drugs and bullying! Wear something with florals, colorful, or Hawaiian My future is bright without drugs! Wear bright/neon clothing and sunglasses

3 Picture retake day is Thursday, November 1. Return your original package to have your student s picture retaken. If you missed our original picture day, order forms can be picked up in the office.

4 Veterans Day Writing Contest Each November, we honor Veterans at Stinson Elementary. During an assembly, our 650 students are able to meet and thank heroes who sacrificed for their future. Afterwards, we host a reception for Veterans and their families. This year, we would like to give the students a voice in the assembly. Winning entries will have a chance to read your work at the assembly on November 9th. We are asking students to stop and think about what a veteran is and what they have done and continue to do for your country. Students may submit a one-page essay or poem about this years theme. Theme: What does the word veteran mean to you? Your submission may be typed or handwritten. Please include your first and last name, grade and homeroom teacher s name. Completed pieces are due to Mrs. Thiessen by Tuesday, October 30th.

7 Math Contest for 4th and 5th Grade Students Plano Senior High School 2200 Independence Pkwy. The Plano Senior High Mu Alpha Theta Club is sponsoring a math contest for 4th and 5th graders on Saturday, November 3rd, from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm at Plano Senior High School, 2200 Independence Pkwy. Registration begins at 8:30 am. The entrance fee is $10.00 per student, cash only, and is to be paid on the day of the contest. DO NOT send any money to your teacher. The contest will be held in the Plano Senior HS Cafeteria, which is in the middle of our campus (see map below). Please bring a pencil. No calculators will be allowed and no concession stands will be open. 9 Dear Stinson Parents, We are coming into cold and flu season as many people are getting colds, the flu, and other viruses we would greatly appreciate your assistance in preventing the spread of illness in our school. Please help us in teaching your child good health habits at home such as; proper handwashing with soap and water, covering their cough with a tissue or coughing into their shirt, proper nutrition, 9-11 hours of sleep each night, and staying hydrated. Students should bring their water bottle to school with them daily. It can be difficult at times to determine if your child has a cold or the flu, below are some symptoms for a cold and for the flu. Parents: Do NOT send your child to school if he/she has or has had a fever within the last 24 hours. They must stay home! A fever is or higher. Your child must be without fever for 24 hours without medication before returning to school. Do NOT send your child to school if he/she has or has had vomiting or diarrhea within the last 24 hours. Do NOT send your child to school if he/she has continuous coughing not relieved with cough medication. Plano Independent School District does not allow ANY school personnel, including the nurse, to give any medication without a District Medication Request Form signed by the parent (pink form). This includes ALL over the counter medications. These forms are available in the front office or in the nurse clinic. Cold: Cough, sore throat, and congestion, may have a mild fever. A fever is or higher. Gradual onset. Symptoms may last 3-10 days. Flu: Sore throat, muscle aches, headaches, weakness, and feeling tired. Fevers may be high and your child may experience chills. Sudden onset Symptoms may last a few days to up 2 weeks. Treatment Go to the Doctor within 48 hours of symptoms starting, if Flu you can get Tamiflu; antiviral medication. Rest and Stay well hydrated. Over the counter medications can help manage symptoms such as; cough, congestion, body aches, and stuffy nose. Prevention- Here are some things we can do at school and at home to help control this: Washing hands often with soap and water. Covering your nose and mouth when you sneeze.

10 Avoiding contact with those who are sick and do not share personal items such as; water bottles, chap stick, eating utensils. Disinfecting surfaces, door handles, bathroom, and all hard surfaces. Get your flu shot. If you have a fever, stay home! You must be without fever for 24 hours without medication before returning to work or school. 11 HPISD Parent Education Committee (PEC) is excited to offer a showing of the film, Brainious to our district parents on Sunday, November 4th at 4PM in the Highland Park High School auditorium. The film is 90- minutes in duration and will be followed by Q&A. Please allot two hours for the program in its entirety. WHY would you want to come see this? The documentary film features the work of the Momentous Institute, as well as many psychologists, researchers and mental health professionals offering valuable information parents can use to feed their children s minds for optimal health and learning. From understanding emotions within the brain to the importance of secure attachment, mindset and how to improve focus and learning abilities, Brainious covers a broad spectrum of subjects. If you really want to understand what shapes children's brains and how to provide healthy experiences for young minds to grow, this documentary is a must-see. This program is a continuation of this year s PEC theme of brain health and wellness. We hope you ll join us to learn more!
