5 Poverty E.T. will not invade the world, but poverty will! The wheel of misfortune is spinning throughout the world, and people are plagued daily by unpleasant news. Wars are ravaging Syria, Libya and Yemen, but the coming war will erupt anywhere at any time. People in Western countries are investing in Artificial Intelligence; others in many developing countries cannot afford the purchase of underwear to cover their nudity. There are daily crimes all over the planet, as well as diseases lurking in the dark waiting for the most opportune time to return and invade this world. In our young century we have heard of Ebola, the Avian Influenza, the Mad Cow Disease, SARS, H1N1, while people are dying from malnutrition in Yemen today. Throughout the world 75 million people died a few years ago from shortage of food. 113 Famine, which is caused by malnutrition resulting from a food shortage, will weaken the person s immunity system, and will be unable to fight any infection or disease. In 2011 in Southern Somalia famine killed one quarter of a million people. In several Western countries, people are overworked and strained for living from paycheck to paycheck to meet their needs. While in Black Africa, people s mood is not jovial either, it can be called gloomy. How will you feel if your wage was one dollar a day? People are on a survival mode and their aim doesn t go beyond subsistence. East and West came a long way from yesteryear's destitution, where people did not have a morsel of bread to defeat their hunger. But why is hunger and poverty still amongst us? Is it because we do not care? Any harmful thing can be defeated, so why is poverty defeating man? Is it because it is fought with words and no action? In many developed countries, including wealthy Arab States, poverty is tangible. You can touch it, and even see it through the wet and sunken eyes of the many who have nowhere to run and no vocal cords to complain. Since that widely publicized global conference on poverty in Stockholm over a decade ago, it has increased several folds. In fact, I can see it lurking from the Deep South where 87
