5 effective cleaning: Assessment: Identify and evaluate the infectious agent suspected, its mode of transmission, potential areas affected and selection of proper chemical disinfectant. Washing: This is the most crucial step in the disinfection process, as efficient cleaning can remove up to 99% of bacteria present. Cleaning: Dry cleaning involves brushing, scraping, sweeping and removing all bedding, feces, feed, dust and debris from the area. Disinfection: Selecting the proper disinfectant will depend on the microorganism suspected as well as environmental factors (e.g. temperature, ph) and safety issues. cleaning considerations: 1. Acidic, Neutral, Alkaline a. Acidic: Low ph, for use in an alternating ph program to remove film associated with scale & mineral deposits from iron and hard water. b. Alkaline: High ph, designed to break through heavy soil, high levels of organic salts, fats, oils and proteinaceous material. c. Neutral: For use in areas where corrosion is a concern, and also for manual cleaning where milder solutions are desired. 2. Foaming vs. Non Foaming a. Foaming- forms a thick stabilized, long lasting foam on surfaces to penetrate and lift dirt. i. Ideal for: truck washes, animal facilities, etc. b. Non-foaming- useful in instances where foaming is not ideal, (ex. cool cell pads) pg 4
6 suggested programs: Facility cleaning & disinfection protocol: It is our recommendation that proper cleaning procedures be followed prior to disinfection for maximum effectiveness of the disinfectant to be used. 1. Animals should be removed from the area prior to cleaning. 2. Remove/cover items in the area to be cleaned that are sensitive to water. 3. Empty all feeders, and if necessary, manually remove heavy organic matter load from the area to be cleaned. 4. Presoak the area to be cleaned. 5. Use a cleaner with appropriate applicator and dilution rate to loosen organic material from the area to be cleaned. 6. High-pressure wash the area (preferably with hot water), ensuring complete removal of all organic material. Proceed from the cleanest areas to the dirtiest and from the highest level (ceiling) to the lowest (floor). 7. Allow the facility to dry completely. 8. Apply an appropriate disinfectant using a proper applicator at the correct dilution rate and ensure that surfaces stay wet for the duration of the required contact time (usually 10 minutes). Always read the entire product label and follow dilution instructions to ensure the safest, most effective concentration is applied. 9. Thoroughly rinse area at low pressure to remove all residues. 10. Allow facility to dry completely before re-stocking with animals. 7 Transport vehicle cleaning & disinfection protocol: Transport vehicles should be disinfected after every haul. Trucks should be thoroughly cleaned, disinfected and allowed to dry before reloading. The person disinfecting the truck should be wearing clean boots and coveralls, as dirty boots and clothing can contaminate the clean truck once it s been disinfected. 1. First remove all organic material, trash and bedding from the trailer and the cab. Pre-clean all surfaces using a neutral ph cleaning agent. 2. Start on the top deck and work down, first spraying the ceiling then walls and finally the floors. Move to the lower deck and repeat. Be sure to make sure the tail lift and ramp gates are thoroughly cleaned, as well. 3. Next move to the outside of the trailer. Be sure that all organic material is removed from the underside of the vehicle, including the wheels, wheel arches, tires, mudguards and the chassis. 4. All equipment stored in any storage areas must be cleaned as well, in addition to the storage areas, themselves. 5. Start the disinfection process inside the transporter. Apply disinfectant solution onto surfaces using an appropriate applicator and dilution rate. 6. Be sure to thoroughly disinfect the underside of the trailer with disinfectant after cleaning and rinsing all exterior surfaces. 7. The cab of the truck should be cleaned thoroughly as well. Apply the disinfectant solution with a soft brush. Be sure to clean the floor, mats and foot pedals. 8. Be sure to rinse all surfaces with water after allowing the disinfectant solution appropriate contact time. 9. The vehicle should then be allowed to drain and dry. Parking on a slope will help facilitate the draining process. The driver should again clean and disinfect coveralls and boots, as any remaining organic material poses a recontamination threat. Annual facility rotation: Sow Farm and Nursery: We recommend using an alkaline cleaner and occasionally rotating in an acidic cleanser to remove any potential film or scale buildup. October February: Dupont Virkon S disinfectant March May: Select from one of the following disinfectants: Biosentry Biophene Biosentry Bioquat 20 Spectrasol June September: DC+R Disinfectant Wean-to-Finish and Feeder-to-Finish: Alternate between alkaline and acidic cleaners when cleaning after each group. Rotating disinfectants used in grow out facilities is recommended. Our technical service veterinarians would be happy to suggest a disinfectant rotation for your grow out facilities based on your herd health needs and pathogen challenges. Any of the Dupont or Biosentry disinfectants can be used after any of the Dupont or Biosentry cleaners, providing that the surface to be disinfected has been thoroughly rinsed after application of the cleaner. We recommend using DuPont Neutrafoam as a cleanser for washing trucks and trailers. pg 6
