Kenya VBS/Construction Dates: August or December Individual Costs: Approx. $805. This includes food, lodging, in country transportation, translators and travel/health insurance. This is an estimated cost and does not include international flights, and is based on a team of 10 people for 10 days in country. Project Costs: $7,145. This total includes construction materials, tools, VBS materials, construction labor costs for the project, and a $2,000 direct donation to the ministry center to support ongoing missions. This is a shared cost between all team members. Project Description: Partner with LHM Kenya in a two part outreach project. One part of the project consists of building a classroom and Rescue Center at Kumpa Lutheran Church in Kajiado county. The classroom and rescue center is a dedication to Matthew Ole Esho, former Chairman of LHM Kenya who passed away two years ago. He was instrumental in starting and expanding Lutheran Evangelism in Maasai land. The classroom will provide a place for girls who are often married off at an early age if the family is poor, even as early as the age of twelve. However, if the girl is in school the family will often support her in continuing her education. The school/rescue center will provide a place for children to study. The government will provide teachers for the classroom once it is built. Project Location: Kenya has a very diverse population that includes three of Africa's major sociolinguistic groups: Bantu (67%), Nilotic (30%), and Cushitic (3%). Kenyans are deeply religious. About 70% of Kenyans are Christian, 11% Muslim, and the remainder follows traditional African religions or other faiths. Most city residents retain links with their rural, extended families and leave the city periodically to help work on the family farm. About 75% of the work force is engaged in agriculture. The national motto of Kenya is Harambee, meaning "pull together." In that spirit, volunteers in hundreds of communities build schools, clinics, and other facilities. Kumpa Town lies in a dry region that is that is home to the Maasai people. The Maasai s are known for the rearing of and raising cattle. The area is very sparsely populated in the largest portion of the country. The basic facilities such as sanitation, water supply are almost nonexistent. The Maasai people are very welcoming for new ideas to come to their community.

Embassy of Kenya 2249 R Street NW Washington DC Phone: Fax: information@kenyaembassy.com Website: Please visit the Embassy of Kenya website for the most current visa information. Sightseeing The team will have opportunity to visit different sites for a rich cultural experience such as Bomas where different aspects of Kenyan culture are displayed or The National Park. Insurance Coverage Medical evacuation insurance for all team members is mandatory. LHM provides insurance from AIG at the cost of $3.30 per day. We will provide you with an insurance card with a policy number and a contact number in cases of extreme emergency i.e. something that requires evacuation. The person you talk with will advise you on what to do in those circumstances. For all other claims please pay any bills that you incur and make a claim directly to the insurance company when you return. Lodging and Meals Based on availability, accommodations will be made for the team by the ministry center director at Maasai Eco Hotel near the worksite. Breakfast and dinner are included.
Budget Sample budget based on 10 people for 10 days (plus 2 travel days): Individual Costs Travel Insurance $3.30 per person per day, including travel days $39.60 Lodging 9 nights per person includes breakfast and $ dinner Food lunch $15/day average for 10 days $ Transportation (include $100/person (van rental for airport transfer and daily $ airport) transportation to worksite) Bottled Water $3 per day x10 days $30.00 Translators $31/person for week in Maasai Village $31.00 Total $ You must also budget for your international flights, immunizations, miscellaneous cost with sightseeing and souvenirs. An airport tax should be included with your flight costs. Be sure to check this when booking your flights. The budget is an estimate and your team may choose to eat more or less expensive, which would alter your budget. We generally over budget as much as possible so you do not run short of funds; we encourage you to have some extra funds available. It would also be wise to carry a small amount of additional contingency funds for any medical emergencies or unexpected costs that may occur. If using a credit or debit card while in country, please notify your credit card company and bank before departure to allow card usage in Kenya. Project Costs Project costs are $7, which covers construction materials, VBS costs as well as a $2,000 direct donation to the ministry center to support ongoing missions. These costs are a shared cost between all team members. The timeline for payment of both Project Costs and Individual Costs will be provided once specific travel dates are determined. Project Costs must be paid 6 weeks prior to departure and Individual Costs must be paid 2 to 3 weeks prior to departure. In some cases, if LHM needs to make hotel or transport reservations, we may ask for partial payments to be made on a different timeline.
Vaccines and Medicines Check the vaccines and medicines list and visit your doctor (ideally, 6 8 weeks) before your trip to get vaccines or medicines you may need. All travelers You should be up to date on routine vaccinations while traveling to any destination. Some vaccines may also be required for travel. Routine vaccines Make sure you are up to date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles mumps rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria tetanus pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot. Most travelers Get travel vaccines and medicines because there is a risk of these diseases in the country you are visiting. Hepatitis A CDC recommends this vaccine because you can get hepatitis A through contaminated food or water in Kenya, regardless of where you are eating or staying. Typhoid You can get typhoid through contaminated food or water in Kenya. CDC recommends this vaccine for most travelers, especially if you are staying with friends or relatives, visiting smaller cities or rural areas, or if you are an adventurous eater. Some travelers Ask your doctor what vaccines and medicines you need based on where you are going, how long you are staying, what you will be doing, and if you are traveling from a country other than the US. Hepatitis B Malaria Meningitis (Meningococcal disease) Rabies Yellow Fever You can get hepatitis B through sexual contact, contaminated needles, and blood products, so CDC recommends this vaccine if you might have sex with a new partner, get a tattoo or piercing, or have any medical procedures. Talk to your doctor about how to prevent malaria while traveling. You may need to take prescription medicine before, during, and after your trip to prevent malaria, especially if you are visiting low altitude areas. See more detailed information about malaria in Kenya. Kenya is part of the meningitis belt of sub Saharan Africa (see map). CDC recommends this vaccine if you plan to visit Kenya during the dry season (December June), when the disease is most common. Rabies can be found in dogs, bats, and other mammals in Kenya, so CDC recommends this vaccine for the following groups: Travelers involved in outdoor and other activities (such as camping, hiking, biking, adventure travel, and caving) that put them at risk for animal bites. People who will be working with or around animals (such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals, and researchers). People who are taking long trips or moving to Kenya Children, because they tend to play with animals, might not report bites, and are more likely to have animal bites on their head and neck. Health recommendation: Yellow fever is a risk in certain parts of Kenya, so CDC recommends the yellow fever vaccine for travelers 9 months of age or older to these areas. Country entry requirement: The government of Kenya requires proof of yellow fever vaccination if you are traveling from a country with risk of yellow fever (this does not include the US for complete list, see Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission. For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Kenya. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans.
This information is based on current information from the CDC and often depends on where the team travels in Kenya. Always consult with your doctor regarding vaccinations, as Lutheran Hour Ministries cannot be held liable for any recommendations made. Please visit for the most current information on travel immunizations. Training and Travel Forms Team training material is provided to each team. There are required travel forms for each team member to fill out and return to LHM. Please note: some forms will need to be notarized. Mail forms to: Lutheran Hour Ministries Attn. Chris Myers 660 Mason Ridge Center Drive St. Louis, MO OR Scan and to Electricity In Kenya, the voltage is 240v with the frequency of 50Hz. ATM s can be used to get currency but will most likely charge a fee. Credit cards are accepted but there may be a fee charged for non cash transactions. Please be sure to notify your bank before departure to allow usage of your debit/credit card in Kenya. Phone Usage Team members will be able to use their cell phone provided international service is set up with their carrier prior to departure. SIM cards can also be purchased at the airport.
LHM Ministry Center Kenya There is absolute freedom to proclaim the Gospel in Kenya, where Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) is taking advantage of every opportunity. Pastors and lay people utilize materials from the Lutheran Hour Library, a collection of Braille, print, video, audio, and electronic resources. Children attend LHM s Kids Club to participate in Bible Correspondence Courses (BCC), monthly activities, topical discussions, and drama and music performances. LHM Kenya also hosts a successful Vacation Bible School (VBS) every summer. In rural communities, language barriers and poverty temper ministry efforts. LHM Kenya overcomes many of these stumbling blocks by traveling door to door to share the Gospel and showing a film called Jesus in the people s local language. The staff also visits prisons, schools, and hospitals. In urban areas where English is the official language, LHM Kenya provides printed material. After hearing God s Word, many Kenyans have enrolled in BCC. These Bible courses have allowed LHM Kenya to spread ministry into the neighboring countries of Tanzania, Zaire, and Rwanda.
