3 Pasteur 3 DIRECIONS: For this eam Pack, each of you will play a different doctor. Your job is to collect data and solve the mystery of what disease you have. o do this, you will have to listen to the other three doctors give you clues about your disease and you will also give them clues about theirs. ake turns sharing information. Begin by detaching, folding, and placing your namecard (last page) in front of you. Also detach the Germ/Disease Data Sheet. Round 1: aking urns Making Introductions LISEN Listen to Dr. Jenner and record his discovery on your Data Sheet. hen read your introduction: "I am Dr. Louis Pasteur, ( ), a very famous French scientist. I got my Ph.D. in chemistry and later discovered that germs cause infectious disease. I also developed the process of heating milk to kill bacteria to make it safer to drink (pasteurization). For today's class, I am an expert on how germs damage the body and make people sick. Write what I discovered on your Data Sheet. (Be sure you also fill it in.) Dr. Sabin will introduce himself next." LISEN/ RECORD Listen to Dr. Sabin and Salk's introductions and record their discoveries on your Data Sheet. Round 2: How Germs Spread presented by Dr. Jenner Listen to Dr. Jenner and follow directions. ASK Your Round? Round 3: How Germs Cause Disease presented by Dr. Pasteur Ask: "Before we fill in our Data Sheets for Round 3, let's try to name the main types of germs." Your Round DISCUSS Everyone discusses; then you give the right answer. Answer: he four types of germs are virus, bacteria, fungi, and parasites. Most childhood diseases like measles, mumps and chickenpox are caused by viruses. etanus, also called lockjaw,

4 Pasteur 4 and strep throat are caused by bacteria. Malaria, tapeworm and hookworm are examples of diseases caused by parasites. Fungi cause athlete s foot. Germs cause disease by interfering with the normal function of one or more of the body s organ systems. I ll now tell each of you your symptoms and your target organ. Dr. Jenner, the target organ for the germ causing your disease is the respiratory tract. he symptoms are fever, chills, runny nose, sore throat and cough. Now fill in Dr. Jenner's Round 3 boxes on your Data Sheet. (Be sure you also fill it in.) My own disease is caused by a germ that grows in serious cuts. he germ produces a poison that causes the nerves to make all the muscles contract. Stronger muscles like those that close your mouth win over weaker muscles that open your mouth. his causes your jaw to be locked closed. Now fill in Dr. Pasteur's Round 3 boxes on your Data Sheet. (Be sure you also fill it in.) Dr. Sabin, the organ system attacked by your friend's germ is the immune system. It takes 5 to 10 years before the immune system is severely damaged. Your friend will then be attacked by germs that are usually too weak to hurt healthy people. Right now your friend feels perfectly normal and doesn t even know he is infected. However, he can unknowingly spread his germ to others! Now fill in Dr. Sabin's Round 3 boxes on your Data Sheet. (Be sure you also fill it in.) Dr. Salk, the germ attacking your body started by growing in your tonsils and intestines and has now spread to your nervous sytem. It has destroyed the motor neurons to your leg muscles, i.e. the nerves that run your muscles. You are paralyzed from the waist down. Now fill in Dr. Salk's Round 3 boxes on your Data Sheet. (Be sure you also fill it in.)

5 Pasteur 5 Round 3 is now over. Dr. Sabin will now start Round 4." Round 4: reatment presented by Dr. Sabin LISEN/ RECORD Listen to Dr. Sabin and follow directions. Round 5: Prevention presented by Dr. Salk LISEN/ RECORD Listen to Dr. Salk and follow directions. Round 6: ake urns Making Diagnosis When all Round 6 lines on the Data Sheet are completed, listen to Dr. Jenner and discuss his question. He will then ask you to: Read aloud the notes in your Dr. Pasteur column, Round by Round. ASK Ask the group: "Do you agree with my diagnosis of my germ and the disease?" DISCUSS Everyone discusses; then you give the right answer. Answer: "Everyone should agree the disease is caused by a bacteria, in part because it can be treated with antibiotics. he disease is called tetanus or lockjaw, because of the contraction of the muscles holding the jaw shut. he disease causes death if untreated, and even if treated, as many as 40% die. his is why tetanus immunization is so important. Dr. Sabin, could you please continue?" Your reading part is complete, Dr. Pasteur. Follow the Data Sheet and listen to your groupmates as they continue Round 6.
