To increase your knowledge of sexually transmitted diseases (TDs), particularly gonorrhea and chlamydia. 2. To inform sexually active students how to practice safer sex. Courting Trouble 3. To advise any student who suspects that he/she might have an TD to visit a doctor or on how the local health clinic can help. 4. To encourage any student who is diagnosed with an TD to inform his/her sex partner(s) as soon as it is possible. 5. To explore any other information relating to TD's which may help to protect your health. 6. To encourage and emphasize why teenagers should abstain from sexual intercourse. There are two parts to this activity. The first part uses a question and answer format to review information, and the second part guides the group through a role-play. n the question and answer section, you all have the same set of questions but only 1/4 of the answers. The indicated person should read his/her question aloud and then get each groupmate to discuss what he/she thinks is the answer before giving the right answer. will be the Director for both sections. You need to be seated close together facing one another so you can hear each person without talking loudly. What are some of the different TDs? top! Before reading further, name as many as you can and give their main symptom. (hint: cause sores or discharge or warts)! Gonorrhea and Chlamydia (which cause discharges), Herpes and yphilis (which cause sores), and warts (which are small bumps). HV is another TD. Men feel a burning sensation when they urinate, and there can be a yellow/white discharge from the tip of the penis. Women can have a vaginal discharge and sometimes pain in the lower abdomen. How do you get it? Can you get it from having sex with someone just once? 5 Can you get it from kissing? No. Can you get gonorrhea from clothes or toilet seats? How soon do you get symptoms after having sex? *Note to teacher: Which explains why must have caught the disease from the girl he met at the basketball court. He could not have caught gonorrhea from because his symptoms started too soon (only one day) after he had sex with. Can it be cured? How? Do the antibiotics cure you permanently? 2/98 5

6 Courting Trouble Gonorrhea Prevention Team Pack What are the effects of gonorrhea if it is not treated? f a female has it long enough, it may cause scarring and make it difficult or impossible to have babies. t also occasionally can spread outside the genitals to the rest of the body, making her very ill. Untreated gonorrhea in men can cause sterility. Do latex condoms prevent transmission of gonorrhea? How much will it cost and will your parents be told if you visit a public health clinic to be checked for gonorrhea? 6 What is chlamydia? What are the symptoms of chlamydia? Does chlamydia spread in the body or cause serious symptoms? t can spread in the body, as gonorrhea, and it can cause scarring and make a woman unable to have a baby, as can gonorrhea. f untreated, it can also cause sterility in men.
