WHAT IS TSUNAMI Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning harbour (tsu) wave (name). Animals can sense a tsunami approaching because of their superior sense of hearing. People who have survived tsunamis say that it sounds like standing near a moving freight train. There are Tsunami warning systems attached to buoys in the ocean that transmit data about the ocean and serve as a warning system. A tsunami is not just one wave but a series of waves or a wave train.
WORLD TSUNAMI AWARENESS DAY In December 2015, the UN General Assembly designated 5 November as World Tsunami Awareness Day. World Tsunami Awareness Day was the brainchild of Japan, which due to its repeated, bitter experience has over the years built up major expertise in areas such as tsunami early warning, public action and building back better after a disaster to reduce future impacts. The date for the annual celebration was chosen in honour of the Japanese story of Inamura-no-hi, meaning the burning of the rice sheaves. n 2018, World Tsunami Awareness Day will align with the International Day for Disaster Reduction and the "Sendai Seven Campaign" and will focus on Target C of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction which aims at reducing direct disaster economic loss in relation to GDP.

TOPICS - Roll no 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29,33,37 WHAT IS TSUNAMI 1. Tsunami is a Japanese word meaning harbour (tsu) wave (name). 2. Animals can sense a tsunami approaching because of their superior sense of hearing. 3. People who have survived tsunamis say that it sounds like standing near a moving freight train. 4. There are Tsunami warning systems attached to buoys in the ocean that transmit data about the ocean and serve as a warning system. 5. A tsunami is not just one wave but a series of waves or a wave train. Hear the audio as many times possible. This is how the students should speak on their respective topics.
Roll no 2,6,10,14,18,22,26,30,34,38 WHY TSUNAMI OCCURS Tsunami are actually waves caused by sudden movement of the ocean due to earthquakes, landslides on the sea floor, land slumping into the ocean, major volcanic eruptions or large meteorite impacts. If the water along a shoreline begins to reduce dramatically, it most likely means that a tsunami will follow in a few seconds or minutes. A tsunami is not just one wave but a series of waves or a wave train. When tsunamis are near the coast, they slow down but increase in height. Hear the audio as many times possible. This is how the students should speak on their respective topics.
Roll no 3,7,11,15, ,35,39 REMEDIAL MEASURES TAKEN TO PREVENT TSUNAMI Tsunamis are inevitable and technology alone won t save lives.people who live in coastal regions should learn to recognize the signs of a potential disaster and know what to do. Because most killer waves are caused by earthquakes, ground movement is one of the warning signs of a giant wave. These are the points to avert injury or death: 1. Cover yourself and stay protected during the earthquake. 2. If authorities warn or you have reason to believe a tsunami is imminent, climb to higher ground or higher floors, at least 30 meters above sea level. If there is no higher ground available, a forest could offer protection. 3. If you see the sea recede, put as much distance and height between yourself and the waterline as possible. 4. Tsunamis can penetrate inland along rivers up to several kilometers, so stay away from rivers when trying to escape a tsunami. 5. Don t return to the potentially threatened areas until authorities indicate the danger has passed. Hear the audio as many times possible. This is how the students should speak on their respective topics.
Roll no 4,8,12,16,20,24,28,32,36,40 HOW TSUNAMI PSYCHOLOGICALLY AFFECT THE PEOPLE? Victims of tsunami events often suffer psychological problems which can last for days, years or an entire lifetime. There are some psychological symptoms which are often good indicators of post disaster symptoms Impaired mental health is also due to the direct impact of the disaster, such as physical injury, the loss of loved ones etc. One type of psychological distress that occurs after natural disasters is posttraumatic stress which can develop after exposure to any event and results in psychological trauma. About percent of children develop full symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder in the first six months after disasters Hear the audio as many times possible. This is how the students should speak on their respective topics.
SCORE CRITERIA The teams are judged based on the following criteria 1. Fluency 3 points 2. Diction 5 points 3. Neatness 5 points 4. Bonus points - 2 points Total 15 points 1 ST POSITION 20 POINTS 2 ND POSITION 15 POINTS 3 RD POSITION 10 POINTS PARTICIPATION 5 POINTS However students can prepare their own content and to those teams bonus points will be given.
DUTY LIST Mentors should check whether the students are in their respective team. Mentors should not allow borrowing of materials from other team. Mentors should help the students to come one after the other and speak their respective topics.
