2 Technology Design Process 2 Introduction and Purpose The common belief is that a picture can help a person understand a concept easier than printed material. Although, this may be true in some instances, it may not be so for everyone. There is one culture who solely depends on pictures for learning, and that is the deaf culture. The deaf culture focuses on the stimulation of the eyes mainly because their eyes become their ears. The deaf culture uses a language that in unique to their culture American Sign Language. Their language is spatial and visual. It is a language that does not require the use of sound. Emphasis is placed on the movement of the hands, facial expressions, body movements, and eye movement and expression. The purpose of the images used in this project is to show that the eyes play a major role in the communication of the deaf culture. The first picture shows the eyes of a young girl focusing on a particular object. Since this person is unable to hear, the picture explains, visually, what the child is learning. The original picture symbolizes the hearing organ for the deaf. This picture was taken with an apple ipod and sent to my via Instagram. The cropped image, where the eyes are the only portion of the picture, symbolizes the ears of a deaf person compared to the ears of a hearing person, and the adapted imaged, the sepia photo, symbolizes that without visuals, the deaf culture can be left in the dark when it comes to education. It was adapted in Fotor, a free online photo editing program. The scanned image is a free-hand drawing of an eye reading the deaf sign for I love you. The line that is transferring between the eye and the sign shows that there is focus on one particular item. The original image created in a Paint program is entitled Crayola Mix and Mash is entitled Listening Eyes. It is created with red paint in Crayola and the main portion of the image is the eyes which reinforces that people in the deaf culture depend on their eyes, not only
3 Technology Design Process 3 for seeing, but also for listening. The final image located in an outside source is an image of an ear that resembles a puzzle with a piece of the puzzle missing demonstrating that the reason some people are deaf is due to the fact that a part of the ear where hearing occurs has not developed; therefore, resulting in deafness. Audience The audience for which this website is intended for all educators. It is intended mainly for educators of hearing students who have a few deaf students in their school district. This includes administrators, teachers, and any aides who may have an opportunity to work with a deaf or hearing-impaired student. Those deaf learners who have the opportunity to attend a deaf school throughout their educational career tend to do much better academically than their counterpart who does not have the privilege to attend a school for the deaf. Since American Sign Language (ASL) is a visual language, the deaf and hearing-impaired learners must train their eyes to become strong and not get tired easily. Although this website is mainly for educators who are hearing, it is also designed for those educators who are deaf as well. Strategies that a deaf person may not think of because the deaf and the hearing see things very differently, can be beneficial to the deaf educator. Process First, I took the original photograph with an ipod touch using the Instagram app and ed them to my address. Next, I opened up my program and downloaded the picture into My Pictures folder where I established a new folder for this course. I entitled my folder in the pictures folder TDT1. I used Fotor, an online picture editing program to change the photograph into the three different edits required (original, cropped, and adapted).
4 Technology Design Process 4 Original photo Once the picture was opened, I clicked on the picture and it opened up in Fotor. Immediately, a variety of choices were presented (add text, transparency, scenes, etc.) for me to use to edit the photograph. I clicked on the crop button to resize the photo so the focus will be on the eyes. Once I had what I was looking for, I clicked the Apply button to accept the new image and then clicked Save to save the photo in jpeg under a new name. Cropped photo
5 Technology Design Process 5 The final edit consisted of adapting the picture from color to black and white with a sepia glow. This was accomplished through the effects tab of the Fotor online software editing program. This was the final step of the editing process. The resizing and the cropping were completed first with the final step in the effects tab. Adapted photo Once the picture was adapted, I clicked on the Apply button and then the Saved button and saved it under a new name. I did not add any text on any of the pictures because I wanted them to represent the deaf and hearing-impaired which all of their communication is visual with very little text. Each photograph and image has been uploaded to the website
6 Technology Design Process 6 The original image created in Crayola Mix and Mash was drawn with red crayon on this software program and saved as a jpeg file to the folder I created under the My Pictures folder. I was able to use my mouse to help in the drawing of the facial features in Crayola Mix and Mash. It was very easy to use. This image needed to be resized because it was larger than the stated requirements; therefore, both eyes are not in the resized image as seen below. The scanned image was a drawing created by a student who has deaf relatives. It can be seen below. It was drawn with pencil and reinforce with black ink to help the image scan better into the computer.
7 Technology Design Process 7 The final image is an outside source that helps to demonstrate why some people are born with hearing. It is a picture of an ear in the form of a puzzle with a piece missing. See image below. This image was downloaded from google images. I typed in deaf + ear + puzzle to find this image. Then I right-clicked on the image and presses save picture as renamed the picture and saved to the folder I created for the images for this assignment.
