7 Diaphragm Use the diaphragm to detect faint high pitched respiratory sounds and components of certain cardiac sounds. The diaphragm attenuates low pitched frequencies thereby making high pitched frequencies easier to recognise. To accommodate a range of patients, use the various sized diaphragms to better isolate the origin of sounds. Included are both child and adult sizes. Large Diaphragm: Generally, this chest-piece is used to detect heart sounds of low frequency, diastolic and third heart sounds, as well as first and second heart sounds. The high pitched murmurs emitting from the heart are also detectable. Small Diaphragm: This is designed to hear infant heart sounds of high pitched nature. Bell Use the bell to detect low frequency cardiac sounds such as first and second heart sounds. As with diaphragms, you can match the bell size to your patient to better locate the sound origin. For this reason, we provide three different sized bells: infant, child and adult. Adult Size Bell: To pinpoint low and medium pitched sounds and murmurs. Medium Size Bell: Concentrates on narrow spots such as between ribs or any other small places to detect low and medium pitched sounds and murmurs. Infant Size Bell: Best suits the examination of infants and small children, low and medium pitched sounds and murmurs. 21 PRODUCT USE CORRECT USE OF STETHOSCOPES Head Frame Before placing the ear tips of the head frame in your ears, ensure the ear tips face away from you as illustrated. Once seated, you may need to adjust each tip to ensure a proper fit and seal to the ear canal. Placing the tips in your ears when they face towards you will result in minimal or no sound as this is not anatomically aligned to the ear canal. Chest Piece Dual head stethoscopes have 2 sides: the diaphragm side and the open conical bell side. Only one side is active at any time. Rotate the chest piece until a click is felt. Test to see which side is active (sounds can be clearly heard from the active side) and if this is not the correct side you wish to use, grasp the stem of the chest piece to which the tubing is attached and rotate 180 degrees until it clicks into position. Any position other than a clicked position will result in minimal or no sound. OPTIMISING THE ACOUSTICAL PERFORMANCE If your stethoscope s acoustical performance appears to be lacking or absent, try one of following: Proper Headset Alignment Liberty stethoscopes have headsets which have been designed to be worn at an anatomically correct angle, oriented toward the user s ear canals. For proper headset alignment, please see the above instructions under Correct Use of Stethoscopes - Head Frame. Proper Fit of Eartips It is important that the proper sized eartips be used to achieve optimal acoustical performance. This is especially true when using the softsealing eartips. If the soft-sealing eartip is too large for the user, the compression of that eartip while in the ear, could result in poor acoustical performance. This could also be true if the eartip is too small. Finding the individual s correct ear size results in the best acoustical performance. Check for Obstructions If the stethoscope is commonly carried in a pocket, or hasn t routinely been cleaned, it is possible that lint or dirt could be obstructing the sound pathway. Routine care and maintenance can prevent this from happening. Check the Seal Stethoscopes rely on an airtight seal in order to transmit body sounds from the patient to the user s ear. Loose parts in the chestpiece, loose tubing, or cracked tubing can prevent an airtight seal. Index the Bell When using a double-sided stethoscope, the user needs to open, or index the bell or diaphragm by rotating the chestpiece. If the diaphragm is open, the bell will be closed, preventing sound from coming in through the bell, and vice versa. General Use and Maintenance Avoid extreme heat, cold, solvents, and oils Avoid prolong exposure to direct sunlight Wipe down binaurals and tubing with alcohol or mild soapy water Eartips can be removed from the eartubes for thorough cleaning Check eartips on a regular basis NOTE: Do not immerse your stethoscope in any liquid or subject it to steam sterilisation. If disinfection is required, the stethoscope may be wiped with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Tubing Care The majority of tubing used on the Liberty stethoscopes is made of PVC (polyvinylchloride) which can become hard when exposed for long periods of time to the lipids found in human skin and may cause stiffening of the tubing over time. NOTE: If a stethoscope is worn around the neck, we recommend wearing the stethoscope over a collar, away from contact with your skin. 23 PRODUCT ANATOMY STETHOSCOPE PARTS Stethoscopes are relatively simple instruments. Despite all the advances in medical tools like automatic blood pressure monitors, electronic ear thermometers, portable medical devices, the timeless stethoscope is still used by nearly every doctor in the world. Acoustic stethoscopes are more common than electronic models. They operate by transmitting sound from the chestpiece though air-filled tubes to the listener s ears. No matter what the specific brand or model, all modern stethoscopes consist of three basic parts: a chestpiece, tubing and binaurals or even lost. The biggest factor in how often you ll need to order replacement parts is the quality and workmanship of the stethoscope. Simply put, high quality stethoscopes are built to last. It is very true that you get what you pay for not only in terms of acoustical performance, but also in terms of long term durability. Chestpiece The chestpiece includes the diaphragm on one side and a bell (hollow cup) on the other side. The bell is used for listening to low frequency sounds, while the diaphragm is used for listening to higher frequency sounds. Tubing The hollow rubber tubing transmits sound from the chestpiece to the headset. Some stethoscope manufacturers allow you to choose the color and length of the tubing (typically between inches). Binaurals The binaurals are what takes the sound from the tubing and delivers it to the doctor s ears. Eartips attach at the ends of each binaural for a comfortable fit. They also work to seal and isolate the internal sounds of the patient from background noise. The most common stethoscope replacement parts are the rubber components, since over time they will get brittle and crack. All the metal parts are virtually indestructible to normal use.
