5 Stairway Lift and Walker
6 Background A seven year old, Thalia, requires assistance with mobility She is diagnosed with Spina Bifida, resulting in limited leg mobility She relies mostly on the use of her upper body to perform everyday tasks
7 Objective Design a Stairway Lift to allow for ascent and descent in Thalia s Split-Level home. Make it compact in order to comfortably fit in a very narrow staircase. Give a child independence as she grows older. Safety First
8 Current Situation The current situation in Thalia s home is her parents will carry her up and down the stairs whenever she wants to move from one floor to another. As Thalia is growing older, it is becoming more difficult for her parents to lift Thalia and safely transport her from one floor to another. A safe and effective device must be designed, and installed to allow for Thalia independently traverse her split level home.

11 Stairway Lift Design Pulleys designed to fully grasp the two-track system Pivot along center axis Seat will remain parallel to the ground from gravitational forces. Pulley system and winch motor allow for continuous locomotion up and down stairs.

15 Alternative Designs Alternative Design 1: Increased maneuverability and safety Height Adjustment present Would be hard for Thalia to lift and balance due to her limited leg mobility Alternative Design 2: Wheels allow for far less friction, resulting in increased maneuverability Built in seat, squeeze-to-stop for safety Brake setup would be hard to manipulate in the event of a fall
16 Optimal Design Implements squeeze-to-go braking system Has additional brake adjustment towards the front which allows Thalia to lean forward to build momentum Contains seat if Thalia needs rest while pushing Even allows Thalia to be pushed by someone else
17 Final Design Height adjustment piece will remove 4 inches of vertical travel to the walker Adjustment piece will be adjust for Thalia Ensures Thalia is able to use the walker now, as well as when she grows.

24 How the test works The patient traces monaural (one ear at a time) thresholds for pure tones 1. Patient presses a signal button and tone plays 2. Volume of the tone decreases when the button is pressed 3. Button pressed until tone disappears then released 4. Volume increases on button release 5. Repeat
