2 SPN 2795/FMI 9 This diagnosis is typically CAN3 Communication Error. CAN3 CHECK Check as follows: 1. Connect DDDL/DDRS (latest version). 2. Turn ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF). 3. Check for multiple codes. If codes other than SPN 2795/FMI 9 are present, repair those first. If only SPN 2795/FMI 9 is present, go to step Disconnect the turbo actuator connector. 5. Inspect the turbo actuator connector and the turbo actuator harness connector for signs of bent, spread,corrodedorunseated(pushedout)pins or signs of wire damage near the connector. If signs of damage are present, repair as necessary. Refer to section. If no signs of damage are present, go to step Measure the voltage between pin 1 of the turbo actuator connector and battery ground. If the voltage is less than 11 volts, repair the cause of low or no voltage between pin 1 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 93 of the MCM Refer to section. If the voltage is greater than 11 volts, go to step Measure the voltage between pins 1 and 2 of the turbo actuator connector. If the voltage is less than 11 volts, repair the wire between pin 2 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 38 of the MCM 120-pin harness connector. If the voltage is greater than 11 volts, go to step Turn the ignition OFF. 9. Measure the resistance between pins 3 and 4 of the turbo actuator harness connector. Is the resistance between Ω? Yes;gotostep16. No; go to step Disconnect the MCM 11. Inspect the MCM 120-pin connector and 120-pin harness connector for signs of corrosion, spread, unseated (pushed out) or damaged pins, or signs of wire damage. If signs of damage are found, repair as necessary. Refer to section. If no signs of damage, go to step Measure the resistance between pins 74 and 75 of the 120-pin connector on the MCM. If the resistance is between 55 and 65 Ω, gotostep13. If the resistance is not between 55 and 65 Ω, replace the MCM. Refer to section.

3 13. Measure the resistance between pins 3 and 4 of the turbo actuator harness connector. Is the resistance greater than 10K Ω? Yes;gotostep14. No; Repair the short circuit between pins 3 and 4 of the turbo actuator connector and pins 74 and 75 of the MCM Refer to section. 14. Measure the resistance between pin 3 of the turbo actuator connector and ground. If the resistance is less than 10K Ω, repair the short to ground between pin 3 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 74 of the MCM Refer to section. If the resistance is greater than 10K Ω, gotostep Measure the resistance between pin 4 of the turbo actuator connector and ground. If the resistance is less than 10K Ω, repair the short to ground between pin 4 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 75 of the MCM Refer to section. If the resistance is greater than 10K Ω, gotostep Disconnect the MCM 17. Inspect the MCM 120-pin connector and 120-pin harness connector for signs of corrosion, spread, unseated (pushed out) or damaged pins, or signs of wire damage. If signs of damage are found, repair as necessary. Refer to section. If no signs of damage, go to step Measure the resistance between pin 1 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 93 of the MCM If the resistance is greater than 5 Ω, repair the wire between pin 1 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 93 of the MCM Refer to section. If the resistance is less than 5 Ω, gotostep Measure the resistance between pin 2 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 38 of the MCM If the resistance is greater than 5 Ω, repair the wire between pin 2 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 38 of the MCM Refer to section. If the resistance is less than 5 Ω, gotostep Measure the resistance between pin 3 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 74 of the MCM If the resistance is greater than 5 Ω, repair the wire between pin 3 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 74 of the MCM Refer to section. If the resistance is less than 5 Ω, gotostep21.

Measure the resistance between pin 4 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 75 of the MCM If the resistance is greater than 5 Ω, repair the wire between pin 4 of the turbo actuator connector and pin 75 of the MCM Refer to section. If the resistance is less than 5 Ω, gotostep Inspect the harness for signs of chaffing or other damage; focus near mounting points and bends in the harness, looking for signs of wear. If damage is found, repair as necessary. Refer to section. VERIFY REPAIRS If no damage is found, replace the turbo actuator. Verify repairs as follows: 1. Turn ignition OFF. 2. Reconnect any electrical connections that were disconnected to perform the diagnosis. 3. Clear codes with DDDL/DDRS (latest version). 4. Start and bring engine up to operating temperature over 60 C (140 F). 5. Verify operation is satisfactory and no warning lamps illuminate. If warning lamps illuminate, troubleshoot the codes.
