1 Starting Out 1. Open Desire2Learn. 2. Open My Media in Kaltura 3. Click on the specific video to be captioned. 4. Underneath the video, on the right side of the screen, click on the Actions dropdown menu. 5. Click Order Captions (highlighted in the picture above). 6. On the next screen, designate your language for the captions and click Order Captions in your designated language. Generating the captions can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. pg. 1

2 7. Once your captions have been Ordered/Generated, select Captions Request from the Actions dropdown menu. 8. On this screen, you are able to see who requested the captions, when they were requested, the due date for the captions, and when they were finished being generated. Most importantly this step leads to editing the video; just click on the Edit button to get started. pg. 2

3 Editing Your Video 1. Once you ve clicked the edit button, you will be taken to a new webpage showing your video in the center, the hotkeys and shortcuts on the right, and your captions on the left. This is the main editing box. 2. The yellow highlighted on the top left is the line you are currently editing, and the yellow box at the center of the screen is where you manually edit what is said. Note: The program will generate the best it can, but most of it will need to be checked for accuracy. 3. In the center of the screen, you will see a list of blue command options. From left to right: a. The double arrows on the far left sends you back to the last sentence. b. The two arrows with a break sends you to the beginning of your current sentence. c. The green button plays the video from where you stopped. d. The last double arrows skips to the next line. e. The remaining of the buttons focus on timing mode and assigning speakers. pg. 3

4 4. Shortcuts are helpful in cases when sounds are present in the video. Certain sounds can be automatically represented by the following string of letters: Unknown (uuu), Inaudible (iii), Crosstalk (ttt), Laugh (lll), or Noise (nnn). 5. Certain hotkeys can be helpful as well: a. CTRL+SHIFT+BACKSPACE plays the video from the beginning of a sentence. b. CTRL+SPACE causes the video to play or pause. c. CTRL+1 causes the video to play at half speed. (CTRL+2 causes the video to play at ¾ speed, CTRL+3 causes the video to play at normal speed.) 6. Once your project is done, you must hit the Approve button in the bottom left of the screen. That will submit your video with your captions to be viewed! Saving your work is extremely important! Captioning can be a time-consuming process; you want to make sure you hit that save button every couple line so that your work will not be lost. pg. 4

5 Ensuring that the Captioning Matches the Speaker! Perfecting your Captioning 1. To ensure that the captioning matches the speaker, you must get accustomed to viewing the current time of the video. For example, looking at the image below, you can see that this line of closed captioning begins at This means that we are currently 40 minutes, 26 seconds, and 7 tenths of a second into the video. pg. 5

6 2. When viewing the current line, you will notice that the system generates a basic version of what it interprets; that means there will be no punctuation and normally a very rough line you will have to go through and edit. The necessary edits will cause the start and end time of the captioned sentence to change. However, the start time should match up to begin when the speaker actually begins that line. To match up the start time of the video, begin by hitting the Go to the beginning of this sentence button. pg. 6

7 3. Once that has been hit, the video should start playing from that current captioned line, where it assumes the speaker starts. If the actual speaker begins after or before that specific moment, pause the video. Then click on the Start time: field above the center, yellow box. You can then use the arrow keys (between the alpha and the numeric pads on the keyboard) to manually change the caption s start/stop time (.1 second at a time.) (See Image Below) 4. You can change just.1 second at a time if they are just a word or two into the sentence. However, if the speaker is far ahead/behind of the captioned line, you can hold down an arrow key to speed up the process. pg. 7

8 5. Another good method is to hit the Go to Start of Last Sentence button. You can listen through this sentence until there is a break between the previous sentence and your current one. This way, you can note the exact moment the sentence starts, down to the tenth of a second. pg. 8

9 6. This same method applies to the end time of the current line. You can start that current sentence and wait for the moment the speaker ends. View the current time of the video, and then enter that time as the end time of the line. pg. 9
