2 1. Please highlight any relevant experiences, either in AMSA or other organizations, that qualify you for this position. I am currently the P&E Program Coordinator. I have brought great ideas, hosted webinars, did my own website and wrote in TNP. Current Vice President of Ole Miss AMSA and was secretary the previous year. I am also an ambassador for National Down Syndrome Society and our main task is grassroots advocacy which prepares me well for the advocacy. 2. Please tell us what specifically interests you about this position, and what you hope to accomplish in it. What interest me is the work we have completed, I hope to continue the topics we have in the past year. I hope to increase our committees popularity. I hope to bring in new ideas (especially professionalism). I really hope to increase our advocacy work and make this committee excel! Another idea I had was something similar to our FB page/newly week letter that makes the AMSA population at undergrads or medical school voices heard on this committee issues and topics. 3. Please detail your interest in serving on the Action Committees and Teams as a steward and planner of AMSA s programmatic work. I would love to plan more interactive programs with AMSA. I feel that our committee has done a lot of great work and want to continue these programs. However, this committee needs more advocacy and more topics to advocate for.

3 To AMSA, My name is Ashley Barker and I am applying for the position of AMSA Professionalism and Ethics Committee Chair. I feel that I am qualified for the position because I know the basis of how the committee works and what the committees goals are. I currently am the Professionalism and Ethics Program coordinator. I have brought great ideas and determination to this committee. I also am the Vice President of my local AMSA and previously was the secretary. In both aspects I have felt my ideas heard and used. I bring a unique diversity to this program as being hard of hearing. During my role of being the Program coordinator I have thought of ideas to do webinars and blog posts. I have hosted the webinars, which gives me experience I can use in as the chair. I also was privileged to host my own webinar and write a piece in TNP about the deaf community and ASL in the medical field. I also am a mentor to deaf premedical students and high school students. I am an ambassador for the National Down Syndrome Society and our main task is grassroots advocacy which I feel gives me a leg up in AMSA Advocacy work. Becoming the Chair will allow me to reach my goals previously stated in the forms. I really want to continue with National AMSA because it has given me a significant space to be myself and to have a say in the medical community and the causes we fight for.

4 ASHLEY BARKER Profile I am currently a Junior at the University of Mississippi. I am getting a B.S. in Biology and have three minors: Chemistry, Psychology, and Neuroscience. Experience Professionalism and Ethics Program Coordinator, American Medical Student Association 2014-present I have been the professionalism and ethics program coordinator for AMSA for the year. I have been a member of national AMSA since My duties consist of programming and advocacy. I help plan webinars, blog posts, review the PPP, etc. This committee was new when I began and I brought great topics to program and advocate, such as the deaf community and the Down Syndrome community. I did my own webinar about the deaf community to increase awareness of deaf and hard of hearing individuals in the medical community. After, the webinar I also wrote a piece that was featured in the AMSA magazine, The New Physician. I hosted the Down Syndrome webinar and the Canopy webinar. I also attended the 2016 National AMSA Convention and will be attending the 2017 AMSA Convention as well. Under this position I also participated in assign the Scorecard and planning the REACH HEWA (health equity week of action) (Jan 16-20th) activities. Vice President, American Medical Student Association 2014-current I am the Vice President of the Ole Miss AMSA chapter for the year. I was the secretary for the year, and have been a member since I also brought awareness of the deaf and Down syndrome community to Ole Miss. I helped start a new position, the advocacy coordinator. Our chapter participated greatly in Worlds AIDS Day and its something I helped promote and organized. Research Assistant, Dr. Sufka Psychopharmacology lab 2015-present I joined the lab in December 2015, but did not perform any duties till the spring semester of We are a pain management lab with animal research. The animals we research with include mice, rats and chicks. Our projects and focus of study includes animal modeling, depression models, anxiety depression models, glutamate and depression, BDNF and depression, cognitive bias and endophenotyping, anhedonia and depression, pain and analgesia models, cannabinoids and cancer-related pain, migraines and environmental enrichment. Floater and Emergency Room Volunteer, Los Robles; Thousand Oaks, CA When I was 16 till I left for college I was a floater at Los Robles. I would discharge patients, run specimen/blood runs, deliver food, work front desks and care for patients. I

5 would also work the maternity ward. I loved floating around the hospital experiencing all the different wards and different types of physicians and patients. When I left for college, I would volunteer at the Emergency Room from 8p-midnight. I would work the lobby when the receptionist would go home, but mainly I worked in the room. I made sure visitors went to the correct room and triage ran smoothly. The physicians and nurses would allow me to watch procedures. I even had to sit in a room and watch a psy patient, I had to make sure she has no weapons near her and I had to feed her. All of this experiences were priceless and helped me confirm my love for medicine. NDSS-DS Ambassador 2015-Current I am an ambassador for the National Down syndrome Society. I work with legislators in California and Mississippi. I have connected NDSS to do two webinars with AMSA. The advocacy campaigns I have participated in was Kevin and Avocet s Law, Federal ABLE, Education Laws (Every Student Succeeds Act/ ESSA) Volunteer, Mississippi State Veterans Home 2015-Current I volunteer at the VA home every Saturday or Sunday. This was nonmusical because we did not have any medical interactions. We would play games or do arts and crafts with the veterans. My favorite part of volunteering, was listing to the veterans stories. They always felt heard and had a smile on their face which made me feel so good. I loved walking into the home and having veterans remember me by first name and we would sit down and pick right off from last week. Receptionist and Notification Runner, Film Permits Unlimited; Woodland Hills, CA 2010-current I have been doing notifications for Film Permits since I was younger than 16. I would drive to places and set up posting/notifications for intended filming. I continued to do this throughout high school and when I returned home from college. I also was a receptionist and this experience helped my patience. I had to take calls from producers or location managers and they had very high demands, but I always had to be calm and patient when taking and directing their calls. Member, Kappa Alpha Theta 2014-current I was a member of Epsilon Zeta chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta since freshman year. I loved being in a sorority because it helped me time manage. I had to go to required events and had to make sure I had adequate time to study. I met a lot of great people in my sorority and will cherish memories. Physician Shadow 2015-current

6 I shadowed a veterinarian who was deaf. This exposure made me realize I belong in human medicine. However, being hard of hearing and shadowing a deaf doctor, allowed me to believe I can become a physician despite what others have said. I also shadowed Dr. Keith Brookenthal, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon. I loved the way he communicated with the patients and the parents and it intrigued me to pediatrics. I also shadow Dr. Rick Frieder. He specialized in Gynecologic surgery, ObGyn, and Clinical Cancer Genetics. He was an amazing doctor. The way he comfort patients and listened to them amazed me. I wanted to be the type of doctor he was. We would stay in the patients room for an hour to two hours. He said when I see my schedule for the day and I look at the patients name I smile because its not patients its friends that are visiting me. I was in awe with this, I want to become a physical that focus on patient care as the number one priority. Notetaker, StudySoup 2017-current A recent job, I take notes for classes and post them to StudySoup. Other classmates can pay for a subscription and receive these notes or study guides I have made for the class. Tutor, Hottytoddytutors 2015-current A fellow classmate started this tutoring company and I joined in as a tutor. I tutor students in Chemistry, Biology, Neuroscience and American Sign Language. Honor Societies 2014-current Gamma Beta Phi-I participate in meetings and donating to causes to better the Mississippi and Oxford area Chancellors List Freshman Year Deans List Freshman and Sophomore year NCSS NSCS AMPHL Mentor, Association of Medical Professionals with Hearing Losses I am a mentor for a few deaf students. Some are in high school and some are fellow premeds. I was chosen because AMPHL thought I had great experiences and perseverance being hard of hearing. I give them advice about schools, classes, MCAT and other premedical items. Of course, how to get through all of this with negative professors, classmates, etc. Being selected as a mentor made me feel comfortable that me being hard of hearing is only making me excel in my life and not putting a damper in it as others may think.
