1 Want to join NHS for ? Students who are interested in becoming a member of National Honor Society will need to attend a mandatory meeting on Wednesday, January 11 th at 3:10 in the Auditorium. Students who do not attend this meeting will not be eligible to receive an application. 2 SOPHOMORES AND JUNIORS INTERESTED IN CONSIDERATION FOR MEMBERSHIP IN THE RIVERVIEW HIGH SCHOOL CHAPTER OF NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY 1. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY will be holding an informational meeting in the Auditorium on January 11, 2017 at 3:05 PM. Any Sophomore or Junior wishing to be considered for membership in NHS in the Spring of 2017, must attend this informational meeting in order to apply for National Honor Society. Each student will sign in for this meeting, and his or her name must be on the sign in sheet in order to pick up an application for NHS. No student will be permitted to obtain a packet for his/her friend or relative. 2. Application Packets will be available in Ms. Rohm s room (Room 215) starting January 12, The last day to pick up your application from Ms. Rohm will be Tuesday, January 17, Applications will be available BEFORE or AFTER school only! 3. The completed Student Application Packets will be due to Ms Rohm in Room 215, no later than Monday, January 23rd at 2:15 PM. No Application Packets will be accepted after that date and time. Please make sure you take great care in completing your packet before submitting it for consideration. Incomplete, careless, sloppy responses WILL have an effect on the selection process. If a student wishes to be considered for membership in this highly prestigious organization, he or she must be willing to put forth his or her best efforts. It is always wise to proofread. Please do not place the packets in Ms. Rohm s mailbox. Only packets delivered in person will be considered. 4. After February 1st, 2016, a committee of Riverview High School faculty members will read and score the Student Application Packets according to a detailed scoring rubric. Students must achieve a total score of at least 80% of the points on the rubric in order to qualify for membership in the Riverview High School Chapter of National Honor Society. The next step in the process will be to present a list of potential members to the Riverview High School Faculty at large for comments on work ethic and character. 5. Students will be notified in writing regarding selection on or before Monday, March 6, Please know that the decision for selection is final. There is no appeal process. 6. The Induction Ceremony for new members of the Riverview High School Chapter of National Honor Society will be held on Friday, April 7th at 7:00 PM. All new inductees must attend. Any new inductee that does not attend the ceremony will forfeit his/her membership in the Society. Membership in the Riverview High School Chapter of National Honor Society is available to students in 10 th and 11 th grade. Candidates must have a current cumulative weighted grade point average of at least , a clean discipline

3 record, and must have been in attendance at Riverview High School for at least one complete academic semester. Through the written application process, candidates must be able to demonstrate consistently the ideals of National Honor Society: Scholarship, Leadership, Character, and Service. Please note that scholarship is NOT the primary criterion for acceptance into National Honor Society; all four areas are weighted equally.

4 NHS Requirements You probably have heard, National Honor Society is a prestigious organization which seeks to honor students who have demonstrated scholarship, service, leadership, and character. While this statement is a good explanation of what NHS is, it does not answer this question: What am I getting myself into? Not only do you need to display those four qualities to gain admittance into the organization, but you also need to demonstrate your commitment to these ideals throughout the duration of your membership. That being said, here is a comprehensive list of what is expected of all Riverview NHS members. Club Fees: Induction Fee - $25 This pays for the materials required to put on the induction for new members each year. T-Shirt - $12 NHS Jersey - $45 (price may vary depending on if you want your name on the back.) Money for t-shirts and jerseys will be collected after acceptance into the organization. Dues - $25 for juniors and $45 for seniors Dues are collected in August, at the beginning of the school year. Service Hours: All members must complete eight NHS service hours during each semester, as well as eight hours during the summer, and participation in a minimum of three NHS activities per semester. These hours can only be earned through NHS activities. NHS Activities: (Subject to change as needed) Assisting Teachers in Pre/Post planning Members volunteer to help teachers organize their rooms and supplies during the first few days after school is over and in the week before school resumes the following year. This also includes volunteering at Open House. This event fulfills the eight hour summer service requirement. 9/11 Remembrance In collaboration with other school clubs, we decorate the school to honor this national tragedy. Breast Cancer Awareness NHS takes a part in decorating the school for Breast Cancer Awareness Month and the PINK OUT! game. Members also sell Pink shirts and the proceeds support Relay for Life. Veteran s Day Volunteering at the VA Hospital Fundraising NHS participates in many fundraisers, such as selling t-shirts, and all members are expected to participate. Kidz1 st Fund- (Mandatory) This year we will be working to raise funds and awareness for the Kidz1 st Fund. Each NHS member is required to raise a minimum of $50 for this charity. Kidz1stFund was created to raise awareness and funds in support of research to fight Fanconi anemia, a rare but serious blood disease that affects thousands of children each year.

5 Dodgeball Tournament Next year, NHS will sponsor the Fifth Annual Dodgeball for Life tournament, which raises money for Relay for Life and the Kidz 1 st Fund. Members create banners, sell tickets, participate in the tournament, and man the concession booth. Relay for Life (Mandatory) Relay for Life, which raises money for the American Cancer Society, is one of the main events that NHS participates in. We hold fundraisers and set up a booth at the event. All members are required to participate on the NHS team and raise a minimum of $50. The ONLY exception is SGA members. (unless SGA does not have a team. Induction Ceremony (Mandatory) Veteran members are expected to help with rehearsals, decorations and seating, along with other tasks that help the event run smoothly. Inductees are required to attend the event, as well as any rehearsals. Teacher Appreciation Week NHS members help make decorations and participate in other activities designed to thank the teachers for all the work they put in to further our educations. Chapter Celebrations/Teambuilding NHS holds different club events, such as holiday and end-of-the-year parties, in order to bring our members closer together. This may seem like a lot of responsibility. In reality, it isn t as impossible as it sounds. One benefit of being a member of such a large organization is that somebody always has your back. That way, while you are expected to participate in a number of activities, no one person is forced to do too much. Every member has the chance to fulfill their responsibilities, as well as have a bit of fun along the way.
