6 What We Know Greater ability to prevent disease Improved products with proven results Less painful techniques Ability to build capacity at the community level With a focus on infants and young children
7 COHI Chronology Spring of 2004 Pilot Project was approved by Senior Management and rolled out to the Regions Manitoba had 3 FN communities that participated Fall of 2005 COHI expands and continues to roll out to 27 FN communities in Manitoba
8 Ultimate Goals of COHI Improve oral health for children which supports the overall general health Increase the number of children free of tooth decay Reduce the need to use general anaesthetics for treatment of tooth decay Teach and support the parent/caregiver to prevent dental disease for themselves and their children Introduce children to dentistry in a positive way
9 Six Fundamental Ideas of COHI 1. Encourage early first dental visits 2. Prevent and manage tooth decay 3. Promote regular dental visits 4. Explain the disease process stressing the infectious nature 5. Teach and promote the use of simple preventive techniques 6. Develop strong partnerships within the communities to promote good oral health
10 Who is Eligible for COHI First Nations and Inuit Children age 0-7 years Parents/caregivers of children age 0-7 years Prenatal women
11 Who Delivers COHI in Manitoba Region? Dental Therapists community based oral health providers Dental Worker Aide (DWA) non dental person from the community who works with the Dental Therapist and provides defined COHI services
12 COHI Training Includes: 1. Knowledge of COHI 2. Basic Oral Health Care and Dental Knowledge 3. Delivery of COHI Oral Health Care Services 4. Organizational and Communication Skills 5. Professionalism and Community Health
13 Dental Worker Aide Activities Collecting consents of children who enroll in program Provide one-on-one oral health sessions Establish links with existing programs and community Apply Fluoride Varnish Overall work closely with the dental therapist to improve the dental health of children and families
