3 Northern Regional Health Authority A public health nurse requested new posters on fluoride toothpaste recommendations from HSHC. The public health dietitian requested copies of the HSHC poster series to be displayed at immunization clinics. Southern Health Santé Sud The region continues to provide oral health information at Preschool Wellness Fairs and through Families First and Healthy Baby programs. They also continue to advertise and encourage staff to attend the HSHC telehealth sessions. The American White Paper, Oral Health: An Essential Component of Primary Care, was distributed to managers in Public Health-Healthy Living and Primary Health Care. Copies of HSHC s Caring for Children s Teeth newcomer s resource were requested from HSHC and distributed to Public Health Nurses and some community agencies working with newcomers. Public Health-Healthy Living will be forming a working group to look at preschool oral health with vulnerable children. This group will look at how the present preschool wellness fair addresses oral health and what methods would be effective to help prevent Early Childhood Caries (ECC) in vulnerable children in that region. HSHC games, such as Wheel of Smiles are being considered for including in preschool wellness fairs. Prairie Mountain Health The new community dietitian in Dauphin requested more information on HSHC resources and the updates to the HSHC toolkit in order to make them available for use in the community. She also requested assistance from HSHC in compiling the 1 year old dental goody bag. Dauphin Community Health Services requested more copies of Caring for Children s Teeth newcomer s resource. The Healthy Baby Coordinator in Neepawa requested information on how to develop the HSHC You and Your Baby dental health kit. 3
4 Interlake Eastern Regional Health Authority The HSHC team participated in the Selkirk Children s Festival on July 10 th with 190 participants coming to the HSHC s table to brush puppets teeth and play the Wheel of Smiles game. Selkirk Children s Festival On August 5 th the HSHC team presented to children at the Springfield Learning Centres in both Anola and Dugald. The children in Anola ranged in age from preschool to eleven years old. The younger children were read a book about going to the dentist while the older children played the HSHC Tooth Friendly Foods game, sorting images of foods into categories. In Dugald a group of school aged children played the HSHC Sugar Cube Game, guessing how many sugar cubes were in each of the five different beverages (water, milk, apple juice, orange juice, pop). Winnipeg Regional Health Authority Families forward, the Fort Rouge/River Heights Parent Child Coalition in Winnipeg, held a fall family resource fair on September 12 th at Bethel Mennonite Church in River Heights. The HSHC team participated with a display. The community facilitator for St. James-Assiniboia area requested copies of the newcomer s resource for community groups in the region. 4
5 Other Provinces/North America HSHC has had many requests for Caring for Children s Teeth newcomer s resource from outside of the province: The supervisor of Regional Dental Program in Inuvik, Nunavut A dental hygienist with Public Health Services in Inverness, Nova Scotia A Dental Health Educator from Assiniboia Saskatchewan Nova Scotia Public Health The Programs & Standards Advisory for dentistry with the Ministry of Health & Long Term Care in Toronto, Ontario. Faculty of Dentistry at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver Health Promoter with Lambton Public Health in Point Edward, Ontario. A registered dental assistant with the Public Health -Oral Health Program in Fort McMurray, Alberta A registered dental hygienist with Thunder Bay District Health Unit in Thunder Bay, Ontario. A registered dental hygienist with Brant County Health Unit in Brantford, Ontario A public health dental hygienist in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia. A dental assistant/educator from the Perth District Health Unit in Stratford, Ontario saw a HSHC facebook post discussing the Eggsperiment game and requested more information about the game. Provincial HSHC Partnership Activities Caring for Children s Teeth Newcomer s Resource HSHC has been building greater awareness of the new resource for newcomers, Caring for Children s Teeth. As of the end of this quarter, over 1,000 copies of the resource have been sent to various settlement agencies, public health offices, health centres, dental offices and school divisions with settlement services. The Manitoba Dental Association (MDA) and the Canadian Association of Public Health Dentistry (CAPHD) sent information regarding the resource out to all members via their listserves. The MDA also featured the new resource in its fall bulletin (see page 6): 5
6 Provincial HSHC Partnership Activities continued The Canadian Paediatric Society (CPS) put a link to the HSHC newcomer s resource on their Caring for Kids New to Canada website ( Caring for Kids New to Canada was launched two years ago, by CPS, to help paediatricians and other health professionals provide quality care to immigrant and refugee children, youth and their families. The HSHC newcomer s resource can be found on their website at the following link: The resource was highlighted on the HSHC Facebook page with all pages from the resource posted separately. The newcomer s resource was requested by the following individuals and organizations in Manitoba this quarter: Margo B. Pilley Dental Corporation, Winnipeg Sherbrook Heights Dental, Winnipeg Immigrant and Refugee Community Organization of Manitoba (IRCOM) Community Programming Co-ordinator for Settlement at the River East Transcona School Division HSHC Facebook The HSHC Facebook page has been active in sharing important Early Childhood Oral Health (ECOH ) information. With 246 followers to date, the postings have been shared and liked by many this quarter, including the following organizations: Nobody s Perfect Parenting Manitoba Communities 4 Families Assiniboine Dental Group Pediatric Dental Surgery Information for Families The HSHC Pediatric Dental Surgery Information for Families resource is now being handed out in the Pre-Admittance Clinic and Day Surgery area of the Health Science Centre Children s Hospital and in the day surgery area of Misericordia Hospital. The resource is given to parents/caregivers of children who have just recently had dental 6
7 Provincial HSHC Partnership Activities continued Activities in the Community On July 8th and 15th, the HSHC team attended oral health screenings for newcomer children at Healthy Start for Mom & Me in Winnipeg and again at the River Heights location of The Mosaic Newcomer Family Resource Centre in Winnipeg on July 28th. On July 11 th HSHC team members participated in the Canadian Diabetes Association Inner City Health Fair at the North Centennial Recreation & Leisure Facility in Winnipeg. The team brought the Wheel of Smiles for participants to play as well as toothbrushes to be handed out. CDA Inner City Health Fair The North End Renewal Corporation in Winnipeg held their annual Picnic in the Park on August 22 nd. The HSHC team used tooth brushing puppets and the Sugar Cube Game to share oral health information. Approximately 600 people came to our booth. Picnic in the Park 7
8 Provincial HSHC Partnership Activities continued The Manitoba Metis Federation held their Annual General Meeting at Assiniboia Downs in Winnipeg, September HSHC hosted a booth at the event, displaying the new Wordle banner and encouraging participants to play the HSHC Say Aaah putting contest. Everyone who participated in the putting contest was entered in a draw for a chance to win a gift cards. Sixty-nine people entered the contest. Of the various HSHC resources that were displayed, the most popular resource was the Brush Baby Teeth toothpaste high risk poster. Annual General Meeting Display Other Community Activities School of Dental Hygiene The School of Dental Hygiene s Rotation & Externship Program has provided HSHC with the opportunity to have students from the School of Dental Hygiene work with us as part of their site placement. Students are working with HSHC Tuesday afternoons for Term I and Term II. They are assisting with the development of a Train the Trainer PowerPoint presentation for the purpose of informing members of Manitoba Dental Hygienists Association about HSHC and ECOH. 8
9 Provincial HSHC Partnership Activities continued HSHC has completed developing a wordle banner. The wordle contains terms and words from the HSHC Logic Model and will be useful at various events. HSHC Wordle Banner HSHC Telehealth Sessions On September 22, 2015, HSHC conducted its 13 th Telehealth session entitled, S.M.I.L.E.plus Intervention: A Fluoride Varnish Daycare Program. Dental Hygienist, Linda Pharand discussed the S.M.I.L.E.plus fluoride varnish program and shared information on how to start a fluoride varnish program. Six sites and a total of 37 attendees participated in the session. One First Nation community, Berens River, also participated. Feedback was good, with some definite interest in starting a fluoride varnish program. The next telehealth session will be on newcomer children and oral health. 9
10 STEP Student Contributions The two STEP students currently working with HSHC returned to their studies in September and will now be working part-time. We will be looking to hire a new STEP student in November/December 2015 so that they will have time to train with both current students before April, when one of the students will be graduating. Attended Selkirk Children s Festival on July 10 th. Attended Canadian Diabetes Association Health Fair and BBQ on July 11 th at North Centennial Recreation Facility. Continued to keep Facebook and Twitter pages up to date. Tracked Facebook likes and shares of HSHC posts for reporting and evaluation purposes. Packaged up more Pearly Whites kits for Children s Hospital units and delivered to wards. Helped facilitate newcomer dental screenings at Healthy Start for Mom and Me and Mosaic. Restocked HSHC resources and delivered newcomer resource to Access River East, Access Transcona, and Access Norwest. Delivered newcomer resource to targeted settlement agencies: IRCOM, Bridgecare Clinic, Hospitality House. Continued to manage and track distribution of newcomer resource requests. Mailed out requested newcomer resource to local facilities, as well as to other health regions and provinces. Sent updated HSHC resources via (games, pamphlets) requested by healthcare facilitators (e.g. Mom and Baby group facilitators, Healthy Living Facilitators). Prepared new sterilization pouches for dental instruments to be used at screenings. Organized and arched HSHC resources in storage room. Created a survey to evaluate our newcomer resource. Created a survey on protocols and procedures for dental emergencies and clinic closures. Continued to work on a report on the rates of pediatric dental surgery Helped with data input to create a report on the dental screenings completed in Carman on June 9 th Presented on oral health at a daycare in Anola and a daycare in Dugald on August 5 th for a group of preschool age children and two groups of school age children 10
