1 1 June 2013 Volume 20 April 2017 From the desk of Bobby Mann, DMD Executive Committee President: Bobby Mann, DMD 502/ Immediate Past President: Angela Shelton, DMD, 270/ Vice President: Darren Greenwell, DMD 502/ Secretary-Treasurer: Joe Cieslak, DMD Budget & Finance Chair: Dave Willis, DMD Dental Health Advisory & Community Service Chair: Michelle Carman, DMD Constitution & Bylaws Chair Dennis Piontek, DMD Judicial Chair: Scott Norton, DMD 502/ Membership & Attendance Chair: Bob McDade, DMD 502/ New Dentist Chair: Emily Brown, DMD 502/ Scientific Sessions Chair: Paul Boyd, DMD, Assistant Secretary Treasurer: Emily Brown, DMD LDS Representative to KDA: Darren Greenwell, DMD LDS Secretary: Susan Broughman Lewis Dear Colleagues, This is my final article for the LDS Newsletter as President of your Society. It has been a remarkable year. First I want to thank Susan Lewis, our executive secretary for guiding me through the maze of business, of committee meetings and events. Secondly, I wish to thank my executive Board of Officers for their many contributions and cooperation...particularly Angela Shelton, Immediate Past President, for planning our most successful January meeting at Ruth's Chris. And major kudos to Randy Ransdell and the many volunteers for making the LDS walk-up Dental Clinic mobile van such a huge success; a win-win situation for the people we cared for and the goodwill image our profession projected in the community. The 2016 numbers are amazing: $131,854 value of donated dental services, 433 patients treated. The numbers thus far in 2017 are: $45,531 value of treatment; 115 patients treated. And thanks to Paul Boyd for obtaining an excellent collective group of speakers for our meetings. Thanks Paul. In the beginning of my term I made it well-known that I wanted more women on the Board in leadership positions. Emily Brown and Michelle Carman answered the call. Thank you. While I have had some health issues lately, I want to thank Darren Greenwell, our VP, for taking over during my absence...outstanding newsletter article. Parting Words: In previous Newsletters I have written about, "THE PRINCIPLE OF ENOUGH', 'ABUNDANCE', 'GREED', 'BEING A PART OF THE SOLUTION AND NOT PART OF THE PROBLEM'. So all this leads to RESPECT. We as professionals need to "act" like professionals...granted we have earned a degree and to some extent that makes us privileged...blindly we are given RESPECT, without hesitation. So it is up to us to maintain that status of Respect by doing what is RIGHT, by being moral and ethical in what we do...not just in dentistry, but in our everyday lives. A quote from Rodney Dangerfield, one of the outstanding comedians of the Johnny Carson era, "I get no respect". And Aretha Franklin sang it, "all I ask for is a little respect...respect" I have somewhat of a conflict in my mind...is it ethical as president of the LDS to endorse a product...to share the knowledge, to share my success with a product that I have been using for the past five months? I finally decided that to NOT share my experience with my colleagues is truly unethical. Over the years I have tried different anti-snoring remedies, the most successful of which were anterior mandibular advancement appliances; however each contributed to real discomfort or painful TMJ consequences, as well as relatively high costs. See page 2 for the rest of the story....

2 2 The MaxO2 Performance Mouthguard is the product. It is a one-of-a-kind mouthguard, aiding in reducing or eliminating snoring and bruxism because of the design for increased airflow & increased oxygen. The fact that it can be fitted CHAIR SIDE, is comfortable to wear and is priced right for us as dentists, makes it a winwin situation for all. Purchase price: $40.00 for small/regular or medium/large in various colors (regular price $49.99) Suggested price range to the patient, $ Insurance codes: D5999, unspecified maxillofacial prosthesis, by report, describe procedure... anti-snoring appliance, patient has mild sleep apnea. 8 8 LDS New Dentist Study Club Meetings will be limited to new dentists in Louisville & surrounding areas that have graduated from dental school within the last 10 years. Tentative dates for 2017: March 2nd, April 6th, Sept 7th & Nov 2nd. We picked these dates to try to avoid other big meetings: LDS, KY Women's Dental meeting, Hinman, Chicago Midwinter & KDA meeting. Possible topics for future study club meetings...digital impressions (have reps bring scanners in to play with); Cements (the goo, the bad and the ugly); Raise your profits by reducing your remakes (root cause/ lab communications); Raise your profits by reducing your remakes #2 (impressions, prepping techniques and tools); Implants 101- restoring for the general dentist; What I wish I knew the first year out of dental school; Sleeping with the Enemy (sleep apnea); NTI, 3 appointment dentures; Growing your practice and how (consultants, Henry Schein, Levin group); working with All ceramic restorations; Verotek, Zirconia, Partial options. Our first meeting will probably just involve food & discussion of which topics the majority would be interested in. The goal of this is to build a sense of comradery between new dentists, to give them a space to learn things that are important that may or may not have been talked about in dental school. Hopefully it will also be a space to talk about clinical successes & failures & what we learned from them. Also the over-arching goal is to pull them into organized dentistry & help them see the importance of it. 10 10 Dentists, Dental Students Have A Chance To Win Trip To ADA The ADA News (3/22) reports that the ADA is launching a contest that will reward a winner with a round-trip flight, five-night hotel stay and registration to ADA 2017 America s Dental Meeting in Atlanta. To enter the contest, dentists and dental students can submit their stories of inspiration, such as what or who originally inspired them to become dentists or who inspires them on a daily basis. The story that receives the most votes will win. The contest runs from April 3 through April 30 and will be held via the ADA Facebook page (facebook.com/americandentalassociation), where all entries will be viewable. Registration for ADA 2017 opens May 10. Learn more about the annual meeting at ADA.org/meeting ADA 2017 Distinguished Speaker Series To Feature Quarterback Peyton Manning. The ADA News (3/6, Burger) reports that this year s ADA Distinguished Speaker Series at ADA 2017 America s Dental Meeting in Atlanta will feature quarterback Peyton Manning. Peyton Manning is one of the greatest athletes of our time, said Dr. Gary L. Roberts, ADA president. But not only is he a great athlete he is also an amazing man whose life off the field defines sportsmanship and good character, from his support to the Peyton Manning Children s Hospital at St. Vincent in Indianapolis to his membership in the American Red Cross National Celebrity Cabinet. To hear him tell his story of perseverance, grit and success is a can t-miss opportunity for those who attend ADA Mr. Manning will speak on Friday, Oct. 20. The 2017 Distinguished Speaker Series is presented by ACT Oral Care. For the most updated information on ADA 2017, visit ADA.org/meeting. Orthodontists Warning Against Increase In DIY Teeth Straightening. HealthDay (3/2, Dallas) reports that more people are attempting to straighten their own teeth often using dubious how-to guides accessed on the Internet, according to a survey by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO). To straighten their teeth, some people are using potentially dangerous objects, such as paper clips, fake retainers, rubber bands, and string, which the AAO warns can lead to permanent damage. What most people don t understand is that moving teeth is a biological process that involves bone that dissolves and rebuilds as teeth are moved into their new positions, AAO president DeWayne McCamish said in a news release. Moving teeth is best done under the direct supervision of an orthodontist after an in-person assessment, including complete diagnostic records. ADA Board Of Trustees Votes To Create National Dental Licensure Exam. The ADA News (3/10, Solana) reported that in February the ADA took a giant step forward...to create a national exam to assess a licensure candidate s entry-level clinical knowledge, skills and competency while averting the potential ethical issues involved in the use of patients for dental licensure examinations. Last month the ADA Board of Trustees voted to approve the development of an objective structured clinical examination (OSCE), a type of high-stakes exam that evaluates clinical and critical thinking skills, widely used in health sciences, including optometry, medicine, nursing and physical therapy. The Board directed that a pilot of the Dental Licensure Objective Structured Clinical Examination be available in 2019, followed by an exam deployment in Updates, Improvements Coming To ADA Credentialing Service. The ADA News (3/10, Solana) reports that new updates and improvements are underway for the ADA Credentialing Service. As part of an effort to improve the credentialing process and reduce administrative burdens for all dentists, the Association is pursuing a new technology system for its credentialing service that, when available, will allow dentists to enter their credentials into a securely designed portal through ADA.org. The ADA is encouraging its members to update their member profiles at ADA.org/MyADA. The article notes the updated profile data will pre-populate inside the credentialing tool once it is ready to launch, which can save time when members are ready to complete and attest. For more information, contact the Member Service Center at or msc@ada.org. To update your member profile, visit ADA.org/MyADA.
